Also, solid chapter once Again
Once this entire Masterpiece is complete I'm going to spend like 2 months rereading the entire thing.
Amazing chapter as usual
Placing my bet on nav accidentally turning off the brainwash effect and the entire civilization of deer turning on him because of it.
Did Nav really have to bring up comments about the deer's totalitarian regime in front of Glade? I'm surprised Glade didn't immediately flip out. Unless this is an oversight on the author's part there's probably something about Glade that differentiates her from the other deers.
The bit about false flagging was pretty interesting though. I knew it was a common practice (Hitler did it), but I didn't know the specific term.
Second. And back to the void I go. See you in a few months
Dis gon b gud
Im wondering if King Aspen isnt just a name, but a method. All the roots of the trees connect, passing minerals and information, so what if the deer have been tree hive minded by selection, magic, fungal spores etc?
I wonder if a name or nickname for a Deer willing to leave, or one about to be sent to the dragons, could be Logan,as in Run?
Soylent green is veal?
Damn, took a while for this but I am very glad it's out. Can't wait for the next one!
Oh yeah Flutter wanted to become a tree.
So what tree type do you think Flutter will become? :P
10787926
Probably a Weeping willow
10787801
It's not like he said it was a bad thing, just that it was indeed a thing.
10787867
Placing my bet on a somewhat demented tree sister being the cause of it. Modus operandi fits- nature magic, control over a glade, long lifespan, etc etc.
always interesting to see this story pop up
10787749
Or perhaps the opposite will occur and Nav will become a quasi-heroic figure again.
This can either go well or incredibly bad, I see no in between.
Something tells me Glade is not a standard deer. It is curious that Aspen knows and approves of Fluttershy. Perhaps it is the idea that her role in the upkeep of the forest is hastening the expansion of the Deers kingdom, making her an ally if sorts in the end game, or perhaps it's sincere appreciation for her outlook and methods.
Also Glade seemed to be able to sense the magic used in creating the path (and seemed to disapprove). Nav will have such an advantage once they get a soul and can directly interact with magic instead of relying on Ava or tree sister instincts. I swear it would be nice for Nav to get a spiritual companion to rely on in addition to the physical companionship of Darya and Flo, or strengthen their bond with Ava and make communication more consistent to the same effect.
Quite some timing & coincidence. I finish the latest update to another story, accidentally click my favorites insted of read later and what do I find?
Thank god the deer are wood elves and not high elves. I don't think Nav could resist the urge to go full Stormcloak otherwise. As for this King Aspen, I've seen some fan art of him over the years. If that art was accurate then I like where this is going. Give all the horny princesses & queens an entirely unexpected kind of competition.

I'm starting to imagine Doppel as your PFP.
10787941
Nice.
My bet is both Nav and Taya dying in the deer village, with Fluer being brainwashed to believe that they both wished to stay there because they believed in their barrier that much, only for it to fail somewhat immediately for the deer due to the failsafe cherry blossoms, whom would be shocked to learn that Navarone is a being who cannot die, the very concept of death being such an important concept to their culture in its own way that it upturns their faith in their king, who couldn't kill a single predator at the heart of their city, for all of 10 seconds before he uses his mass brainwashing magic to re-control them.
Goddamn this story.
I love it so much.
I feel like this place will be as bad as Nav's trip to Iceland.
If the deer are always in pairs, where is Glade's buck? Something interesting is going to go down.
And now... I will wait a month or a few for an update....
10787721
The day this story ends will be one of great sorrow and contentment.
10788329
I won’t be surprised if the writer decided to do something like that. Altho that is also a bit of a cliché in stories where the mc can come back to life.
10787943
To the deers it would be a false accusation, as it directly contradicts what they're taught. Glade wryly pointed it out as so but didn't seem too bothered by it, leading me to believe she has secrets beyond just being a tour guide.
After he got turned into a female and the stones stopped working I just really lost interest in the story it just keep changing to much to fast and it just lost my interest after the stones died
10788798
Its a cliche that a character dies and comes back to life if they can?
10789265
No I ment, that if they can die and come back to life, that something happens in which they trust someone and then are killed by them just to then come back to life and take revenge (obviously) on the person, often that revenge is extreme.
Or that is what I have seen in almost every story I have read where that can happen in.
10789297
Except Navarone would probably just say, "Fuck that, they're uninvited" and not care he and his daughter were murdered, especially with how powerful the deer and their city are. The only reason cliche tropes are bad is because the characters are cookie cutter. Least Navarone has personality beyond reactionary and behavior, and actually has a dynamic* reasoning.
It WOULD be amusing for Navarone to bust their bubble as a massive middle finger and leave them to fix it so they never bother him again, but again, he seems the type to just ignore them in favor of not having it be an issue afterwards.
Plus none of them really outright trust the deer, Nav doesn't even really want to be there, nor his daughter.
10789308
You’re right that is something I can see Nav doing. But the writers can also do something good with that, sadly I’m not creative enough to come up with something for that scenario.
10788329
That... Makes too much sense
10789317
I think a big part of writing is ACTUAL empathy.
Not that off brand "put yourself in the place of me" shit, but actually thinking from the perspective of someone else. For example, if you put yourself in the place of a serial killer, most reasonable people would either turn themselves in or be catastrophically afraid of being caught, when the actual serial killer would just be cooking eggs and not caring because he's a psychopath who happens to make damn good eggs, you know?
See the sides of things you wouldn't ever agree with, and think about the reasoning people use for something, even if flawed from your own perspective. In fact, you can use the flaws as you understand them to create a unique take on the situation by twisting what would happen if it went wrong by mixing both said perspectives. Being rude to your waiter makes them take longer, but what if they worked faster like your rude friend said they would? Why would that happen? Because their boss is ruthless and will fire them if they don't meet company to customer positive rating.
The waiter is afraid of the authority above them, but would absolutely not serve you if they could, and would remember you being rude, but depending on how dependent they are on their job, they may treat you friendly even outside of work if you happen to have to work together for any reason. The tension raises as the waiter is pushed on the brink by this very rude person, who will not leave them alone and won't let them politely get away, until suddenly a snap in the waiter and they suddenly go to hit the rude person, only for that person to try and block the punch with his arm, which was holding a knife at the time, inadvertently stabbing himself.
Boom, mystery murder story where the murderer isn't a psychopath, but having a history of doing what they don't want due to fear, they go all out in trying to hide the evidence, coming off to detectives like some kind of psychopathic genius who premeditated the murder, when instead they thought quickly on the spot and just butchered the person and threw their bits into a garbage disposal, greatly effected by the whole thing.
Tl:Dr
Characters make the story, the story should NEVER make the characters, if you have a powerful character just because they're a powerful character, you have a bad story that is not at all compelling....
10789339
That is some good tips for a writer and is also something I never noticed. Thanks for telling me.
10788488
Oh hell, I thought of that part way through, but just assumed he was eaten by a predator early on or something, possibly sold as a criminal to dragons, or maybe even someone who was more resistant to the king's mind control and executed for a made up crime.
But then I thought about it.... What if She's the King's doe? And all that shit that Nav said casually about how effectively he's read the kingdom was basically said to one of the most important and dangerous people in the whole kingdom, and is the reason they're going to die now if at all?
10789372
Lol, I didn't even think of that!
10787694
Agreed, ps: Why is everyone downvoting this?!?
Creepy, creepy deer.
~KBO.
3.1 Million words and i'm about to restart the entire thing all over again. I started reading this all the way back in 2013, can't remember exactly when, but i have yet to restart and go back over to refresh things. At least i don't remember doing so..... See y'all when i catch back up in a few weeks. maybe.
10787941
Again?
10789662
That was five years ago, and I have since matured greatly. But thank you nonetheless
Bacon.
I’m calling it all the deer are mind controlled by the king from birth into obedient slaves that don’t know they are slaves and at some point navs gonna have to kill the king to free the deer and hope the brainwashing wears off after a few generations
unleashing Nav on a brainwashing tyrant? what could possibly go wrong?
10787801
Glade is alone. What did we learn this chapter about that?
This seems like a huge risk to take just to establish relations with a new race, I'm surprised Nav didn't ask the deer to meet in a more neutral location. Putting himself completely at their mercy without much of an idea what they're like seems dumb of Nav, although not uncharacteristically so.
Great chapter as always!
Keep up the good work
10799121
Oh, they certainly do, but it's one of those classic "glaring mistakes" that grates on native English speakers who, through whatever mix of nature and upbringing, notice these things.
Imagine what it'd be like if an author had Celestia using words like "guy" and "dude" and it was obvious that the author wasn't doing it to craft a character, but just because they didn't understand the concept of character voice and was just making every character talk like they do in day-to-day life. Same thing.
Nobody mentioned ot, but I think I can safely say that most of us did't know about the deer shedding their antlers.
The deer seem to be acting quite unnaturally. Since we have't seen action in a while, and Taya mentioning that she can't tele away, leads to me wondering about Nav's near future.
10787945
I don't think we will be having any repetition like that. The monkeys already went through this system.
10788422
The deer don't seem that threatening, though it would be an interesting suprise if they did.
I bet we are all worried about the wrong thing, that the deer are just a distraction for us to focus on. To throw us on the wrong path. While the more important clues are beeing covered with them. Maybe even the same applies to Nav. Show him creepy, to cover the 'usual' unusual behaviour.
I forget how much I love reading every time I take a long break from this site. People here are my personal heroes keeping me from wasting my time

Are you sure? I’m fairly certain the only Tree Sisters we’ve seen are the changeling mushroom grove one and the one that went to Canterlot for the Gala. Can’t remember if they were one and the same, but the Monkeys weren’t kept by a sister, they were ruled by one of the water elementals, the bitchy one.
