Only he gets a head start compared to ponies as he did a LOT of growing in the egg and so hatches capable of talking.
Read a lot of nice and seen comics on the comic. Fav comic is one where during mother's day Twilight encourages Spike to give Twilight Velvet a mother's day card he made, bit he won't do it. Then Velvet realizes he doesn't see her as his mom, and has spike give it to Twilight like he wanted.
Best fic is Small Scale, where a dragoness sees Spike one day and forcefully "adopts" him. Won't spoil it but handles the mommy issue in an interesting way. Bonus points for implications between Celestia and Bahamut dragon God.

Yeah, the whole idea of Twilight raising an infant dragon when she's just barely a grown filly herself never struck me as realistic. This felt like a more reasonable approach -- though that's just my headcanon on it.

Yoo this was super cute as well. I love how you had Twilight and Spike meeting and even had it set up to where they didn't first interact even though Twilight hatched Spike. It just made their meeting all the sweeter. Thanks for sharing
