I had fun with this story imagining what happened between NMM arriving and going on to shadow Twilight and her friends - there's just enough time for something to happen and this seemed to fit perfectly.

This is the best reasoning I have seen for the Canterlot invasion.
The only other satisfactory reasons I have seen revolve around Chrysalis's sanity - because for how long could captured and cocooned ponies supply food ?

Thank you - there is just a small window of opportunity where this scenario could fit into canon!
I agree entirely with you that a large hive would require a large number of disappearances to supply enough food, and so many would have gone missing as to have attracted the Royal sisters before now. Equally, I've never thought of Chrissy as mad, just amoral.
