The final timeline

"There's no way you can win Twilight!" Starlight shouted, floating above a cloud. She had once again prevented the past Rainbow Dash from doing the sonic rainboom, and once again, her plan had succeeded.

Twilight was exhausted, laying on a cloud, with Spike resting on top of her. "Please Starlight! You have to stop this!" Twilight shouted with what little breath she had in her. Starlight replied with a harsh laugh, as the time hole once again appeared above both Twilight and Spike. "Please Starlight, jus-"

Twilight's words were cut off as she was sucked into the portal, returning her and Spike to the present. "Sorry," Starlight giggled, "I didn't quite catch that," she said as the portal closed.

Starlight rested herself down on the Cloudsdale road, taking a breath to regain her energy. "Hmm, that makes what, six times she's tried to stop me now? Or was it seven?" she asked herself with a smile. That smile however, quickly faded, "Although, if she keeps coming back, she might win eventually... No I can't have that."

Starlight pondered for a moment, thinking of just how determined Twilight was to stop her, it was possible that she might actually win if she keeps trying, so what could she do? "Of course..." Starlight grinned, "Come on Twilight, I'm waiting."

After a few minutes, the time portal appeared above Starlight, sucking her in. "Took your time, eh princess?" After she was sucked in, she was spat back out of the portal again mere moments ago, the same time it always was when they came throught the portal.

When Twilight returned, she immediately put up a magic shield to stop Starlight's first attack. But it never came. Instead, there was a flash of light behind Twilight, and when she turned around, she saw Starlight had teleported Spike into her hooves.

"Hey Spike, mind if I borrow this?" She asked, removing Spike's backpack.

"Wha-"

"Thanks," she said dryly, throwing Spike back over to Twilight. "Now I've got what I want." Starlight pulled out the time scroll from Spike's backpack.

"What are you doing Starlight?" Twilight asked.

"Doing what I should've done a while ago, it would have saved us both a lot of trouble." Starlight replied, grinning victoriously at Twilight.

"No... NO WAIT, STOP STARLIGHT!" Twilight yelled, "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!! YOU'RE DESTROYING ALL OF EQUESTRIA!!!"

"Pfft. Oh I know exactly what I'm doing," Starlight replied, "I'm making it so you can't come back her ever AGAIN!!" The time scroll that was floating in front of Starlight immediately burst into flames.

"The... The scroll..." Twilight muttered as she froze on the spot, and all semblance of motivation left her eyes.

"Now just one more thing," Starlight said, shooting a beam of magic at the flying Rainbow Dash, hitting her wing, slowing her down, and stopping the sonic rainboom once again.

She looked back over at Twilight and Spike, who both sat there with pain and sorrow in their eyes. "What, nothing else to say?" Starlight asked as the time portal opened up above Twilight and Spike, and began to lift them both off the ground. "Well then, bye-bye Twilight, and I guess I won't be seeing you again, will I?" she mocked with a laugh.

Spike and Twilight held each other close as they were lifted closer to the portal. "Twilight..." Spike muttered.

"I know Spike," Twilight replied as tears began to fall from both of their eyes.

Both Starlight and Twilight's horn glowed, and Starlight felt herself being dragged closer to the portal. "H-Hey, What are you doing?" Starlight asked as she was pulled into the portal with Twilight and Spike.

"You're coming with us..." Spike replied dryly, as the portal closed.

The portal opened and dropped the three of them on the map, back in the present day. Starlight shook off the impact rather quickly, and laughed. "Ha, now you're stuck without your precious friends, and there's no way you... can..." Starlight looked at her surroundings, or lack there of, "...Stop... me..." The three of them were in some kind of barren wasteland, with no sign of life anywhere.

The three of them climbed down off of the map, onto the sand below. "We know..." Spike replied, hugging Twilight tightly.

"You win Starlight..." Twilight continued.

"Where are we?" Twilight and Spike sat there, both motionless, holding one another tightly. "Tell me!" Starlight demanded. No response. Starlight looked around the wasteland again. "What have you done Sparkle!?"

"Me?" Twilight replied weakly, "What have I done? You're the one who changed the past, Starlight?"

"Oh COME ON!" Starlight replied harshly, "You expect me to believe that without your friends, all of Equestria would be a barren wasteland?" she asked.

"Even if I told you that, you wouldn't believe me, would you? But the proof is all around you anyway, Starlight," Twilight replied weakly, "Just take a look at what you've done."

"T-This is just... a spell you cast to make everything look like this. Yeah, you're trying to get to me, and it isn't going to work!!!" Starlight closed her eyes, and a large wave on energy came out of her horn, covering the land. "There, no more magic sp-" she opened her eyes, and saw that the world hadn't changed. It was still an empty, abandoned wasteland.

"What was that?" Spike asked, to no reply.

"How did you..?" Starlight shook her head, "No matter, I'll just..." She cast the spell again, but to no avail, the land refused to change. "How are you doing this?" she asked hastly.

"Doing what?" Twilight asked.

"Th-This mirage spell, that wave should've cancelled out all the magic in its path, but I couldn't even feel you fighting against me, let alone being able to resist my magic!" Starlight answered, "So how are you keeping this spell up?"

"This isn't a spell Starlight, you're in the present," Spike said, "The present you created."

"That's not possible!"

"Spike and I have seen many different timelines now, each one, worse than the last." Twilight began, "But, the last timeline we went to was just like this one." Twilight wrapped her wings around Spike, "A barren, lifeless wasteland." Twilight lifted her gaze from the sandy ground below, and looked at Starlight, "You know what that means?" Starlight felt her hooves shake, as the realization was sinking in. "It means it doesn't get worse than this."

Twilight then looked straight into Starlight's eyes, and saw that she was finally beginning to understand. "I hope this is what you wanted, Starlight. Because without the scroll, well, you said it yourself. There's no way to go back..."

As for what Starlight saw in Twilight's eyes, there was nothing. The princess had been broken, her spirit was gone, she had no fight left in her. She... she wasn't doing this. With that in her mind, Starlight took one more look at the land around her.

"Do you get it now?" Spike asked.

Starlight was silent, she just couldn't seem to bring herself to say anything, all she did was sit down on the ground below, as tears began to fall. I did this? she thought.

"Hey Spike," Twilight began.

"Yeah?"

"Ready to go?" she asked.

"Go? Go where?" Starlight asked.

"Give me a moment..." Spike replied.

"Where are you going?" Starlight asked desperately, "I swear if this is some kind of sick joke, then you two are dead!!!"

Spike took a deep breath. "Alright," he nodded his head, "I'm ready Twi."

Twilight and Spike broke their hug, and both turned away from Starlight, "Where are you two going? ANSWER ME!!"

"We don't know," Twilight replied, as her and Spike began to walk away, "There's gotta be life somewhere around here, right?" she asked weakly.

"And without that scroll, there's no point in hanging around that," Spike continued, pointing at the map behind Starlight.

Did I really cause this? Starlight thought, Is this really what Equestria is like without her friends?

Spike climbed atop Twilight, who looked back at Starlight one last time. "I hope you're happy with this world Starlight, because it's the one you were fighting so hard for," she said dryly before both her and Spike slowly took off into the sky.

Starlight felt something break apart behind her, and when she turned around, she saw the stone map of Equestria had crumbled into a simple pile of rocks. She took one final look at the dead, empty world around her, as Twilight's final words rang through her head over, and over again.

I hope you're happy with this world Starlight, because it's the one you were fighting so hard for.

Author's Note:

Just a quick one shot I thought up some time after seeing the s5 finale, I know it's not much, but I hope you like it.

Any and all comments and criticism is appreciated.

That was cold , Ice cold...:twilightoops::moustache:

I liked it, though I thought the way it ended was way too out of left field.

Not bad, but you SERIOUSLY need an editor.

Seriously, "barron"? :facehoof::facehoof::facehoof:

I appreciate the honesty.

She got what she wanted.

I preferred the first ending...

6687111 I don't think the first ending was bad, but I felt that such an act from Spike and Twilight needed a more through setup or it feels completely out of character for them to go straight to the final solution, as opposed to going off alone to give Twilight at least a chance to recreate the time travel spell.

6687735 Or it shows they were smart enough to go for the final solution. Why waste time when you can get it done?

6686262 Yeah. Barron.

Type the word out yourself. It doesn't offer you an auto-correct. So the writer must have chosen it instead of 'barren'.

Not a bad story and I could see a squeal coming from this following Twilight and Spike or Starlight.
However to point something out...

and now there's now way to save Equestria.

(Taken directly from short description)
Change that second "now" to a "no."

well you got your wish starlight, the timeline you created

That was dark, but it was nice to see Starlight get her comeuppance, just too bad it had to come at the cost of all Equestria. Bit short, but simple enough story. And nice touch at the end with the Cutie Map crumbling, that and the destroyed scroll drive home that there's really no way back.

They didn't show it or even hint at it, but it will always be my head-canon that the final blasted wasteland is where CELESTIA won. Against everyone. And became the Hellfire Sun/Solar Flare/Nightmare Star from the cards. After all, it's basically a desert. With eternal sun, it's constant, blistering heat. No rain, no cool night, nothing but eternal burning sunlight. I imagine Hellfire Sun is the only thing alive in that entire alt!Equestria. Yes, I think without Twilight and her friends, Celestia would have turned into Tyrantlestia, either because of absorbing Nightmare Moon's corruption to save Luna, or simply because she had no one and decided that all ponies would love her, no matter what.:pinkiecrazy:

Anyway, that's my imagining for what this future really is. This was great. I'd love a sequel. No matter what you decide this future is. Maybe it's one where STARLIGHT won, and made everypony equal and the land got destroyed because of no food, no rain, etc.

Now what we need is for a certain madman with a box to show up.

*Sigh*

I'll admit to being slightly biased. After all, I've written close to this exact idea already. However, that won't stop me from saying that I found this incredibly jerky.

Also, Starlight seems much less vindictive then she should be... though that might just be personal choice.

(It might also behoove you to capitalize your title. Just saying.)

I don't overly get the point of this story. Why did they have to come back to the same wasteland? Why didn't you just have her rip the scroll one loop prior.

I guess the point of the story is to show Starlight Glimmer seeing the horror of what she's done, but it's done in a pretty ham-fisted kind of way. So much so that I kind of didn't feel anything for this story, for Twilight just giving up (sorry, even with that spell gone, I couldn't see her just walking off and giving up forever), or for Starlight's "What hath I wrought?" moment.

there are some characters who are bad that can reform and those that should stay in Tartarus.
i watch the series up to date and i Personally never liked Starlight Glimmer since the beginning of season 5 and should be in a cell next to Tirek in Tartarus because she doesn't deserve a second chance, but that's my opinion.
by the way (thumb up) great alternate ending.

6694320 that may be true, but would you say the same for Diamond Tiara? We have seen a change of heart from her, and it seems everyone accepts it. Give Starlight a chance. :pinkiehappy:

6694447 i have thought of that but diamond tiara was at the time a bully and starlight is not.
I gave trixie a chance, diamond tirara a chance, discord , sunset shimmer and even the dazzlings a chance, but i just couldn't give starlight a chance. Because of her, she almost made me stop loving the series.
On my watch through the series of MLPFiM i gave too many chances on characters to change to good but starlight just doesn't seem worth to me to give her a chance. :fluttershysad:
:trixieshiftleft: i'm sorry if you don't like it, but it's no hope for me to rethink this.
I'll never like Starlight glimmer, i'm sorry :trixieshiftleft:

6694626 an opinion is an opinion, and I respect that. But, for me, I felt the DT and Starlight, as well as Sunset and Starlight, had the same personality. I was half-expecting DT to grow up a bully and get nastier. If you cannot give Starlight a chance that's fine by me, but I hope that whatever Hasbro plan, it redeems her in your eyes

I personally think that Starlight should have been shocked like this to make her redemption believable.

6696476

Absolutely. If they'd have stuck in that timeline when they had that last conversation, it might have actually worked.

What we got left me with the unshakable impression that Starlight Glimmer is seriously mentally ill and unstable for that kind of abrupt swtich-over.

I suppose she did get what she wanted. After all, all things are equal in death.

I can't believe that they made Starlight a good guy. She was a terrific villain and for that I'm upset with Hasbro. I do hope they give her at least a smart mouth and make her a good pain in the butt.:trixieshiftright: :trixieshiftleft: :twilightsheepish:

6694626 give her a chance she might get a episode explaining on her mind why she did it more in detail and she might have to deal with what she did or she might punish herself for it discord might teach her a lesson

6697312 it could be the timeline resetting itself to reflect what has transpired

6714451 I'll say it once and say it again "I'll never like Starlight glimmer".

6715752 OK but things change

This was a rather dark take on a already dark timeline... And I loved it. Starlight learns the consequences of her actions the hard way and now, she can't do anything to fix it. Damn, that's some hot tea to sip.

seaquel plz

How miserable.

~Leonzilla

This could go somewhere. Someone make it happen.

Well that just happened...:pinkiegasp:

could you make a sequl.

6685476
But not undeserved.

It's a really solid alternate ending. However to be perfectly honest I'm kind of dissapointed that there's no sequel to this. I mean what's beyond the wasteland? What will happen to Starlight after this? It's a genuinly interesting concept to explore in a sequel story.

I hope you're happy with this world Starlight, because it's the one you were fighting so hard for.

Yet it wasn't what you thought it would be:ajsleepy:.

8673495
You wonder what is beyond the wasteland? Well it's simple, there's nothing. Nothing at all.

Without ponies to farm there would be no food which would destroy trade and the economy, without ponies to be doctors epidemics would soon break out and kill millions before the bacteria too would die out and finally without Celestia and Luna to move the Sun and moon the world would slowly grow to become a desolate place.

What few ponies that could survive the food loss would try and flee to other countries for either aid or refuge but the plagues would soon follow and kill the countries. If any creatures survived the plages then the end of a day and night cycle would inevitable doom the planet.

A sequel to this story would be Twilight and Spike trying to find a way to survive in a barron world devoid of all life and with no hope since Celestia and Luna are gone in this world. Maybe they could find a small pocket of life left or Twilight could find a means to restart life while taking control of the Sun and eventually the moon but she would have to restarting all life.

As for Starlight, well she would probably kill herself before admitting she was wrong but if she didn't kill herself she would most likely face a very slow and painful death as This version of Twilight would likely never help her in any way. So she will live her life slowly dying in a world of her own creation.

Now that I think about it. Does life still exist?

10126785
not necessarily. I mean, the griffons are able to make their own food, and so the dragons are able to eat rocks, so there has to be something beyond the wasteland that Equestria has become. Is it better than Equestria? More than likely not. Is it worse than the wasteland? More than likely not.

11175146
I doubt the griffons survived but the Dragons might have, if so then Twilight could try to stay with them but that's even if they did survive. My best guess is the minotaur's and griffons held out the longest of the races but eventually would die to a plague or the planet being cooked/frozen by a non-functional day night cycle. The Dragons are impervious to heat but the cold is a different story since they are reptilian and as such they would be cold blooded, however they are the most likely to survive in this scenario.

11175307
sure, but have you ever seen Spike get sick in the show?

11175308
The only time I can think of was when Celestia send all those messages via his fire breath to snap Twilight out of being under Discords control, he complained his stomach hurt.

11175949
And since they're able to live in lava, I'm pretty sure that they would still be around.

11175986
Have you forgotten how the Dragons acted before Ember became the Dragon Lord, I honestly doubt they would let Twilight join them and even if they did I doubt she would be able to live with them properly. It would make more sense for Twilight to seek out the dragons that did survive so that Spike could be safe and protected while she went in search of a means to undo what happened or at the very least find a way to start life again while getting the Sun and Moon under control.
