Long ago, before the present Equestria existed, an isolated young kingdom known as the United Triarchy of Equestria was ruling with the land with newfound friendship. While it was far from a utopia, it was the best nation that the world had seen in a long, long time.

Meanwhile in the city of Canterlote, Clover the Clever breaks every element of her life in one simple move: she takes a walk after her bedtime. Now, she is lost and only wants to return home.

Starswirl the Bearded has traveled all over Equestria since his return from limbo, and has also served as a teacher for many magically gifted students. But now the old wizard decides he needs a break, and so he travels to the Crystal Empire in the hopes of resting.

However, Mistmane soon calls upon her fellow pillar to ask for his help with a most difficult task: Controlling and containing the magical abilities of the young princess Flurry Heart. Not one to ignore a request from an ally, Starswirl accepts.

Starswil is fairly confident in his knowledges of alicorns due to his past experiences, he doesn't expect too much trouble. But he and Mistmane will soon be surprised by how powerful one little foal can be on her own.

Reports of increased solar intensity come in from across Equestria and Celestia's power seems to be in a mysterious state of flux. Twilight and Trixie raise their new foal. A rambunctious unicorn colt, whom they named Starswirl after the historical unicorn wizard. And like the mage with whom he shares his namesake, young Starswirl Sparkle seems to be destined for greatness.

It has been four years since Nova Shine and Twilight Sparkle sealed away Envy at the base of the Everfree Vaults and got engaged, and a lot has happened. Nova has been training to become the archmage, Twilight and her friends defeated Cozy Glow, Tirek, and Queen Chrysalis, and now here they stand, with Nova's Ascendancy to come, his and Twilight's wedding (finally) on the horizon, a new apprentice for Nova to teach, and Twilight's coronation as the Ruler of Equestria set for the coming weeks. Though it's time to say goodbye, Nova and Twilight have made their peace with their lot, and are happy to begin a new chapter as they prepare for their new lives ahead of them.

But this happy life, in the midst of upheaval and transition, does not last.

Nova discovers that his old nemesis, whom he had believed sealed away for several years more, has escaped. He also learns she is now seeking out several objects with the potential to cause untold horrors and devastation. With Equestria still reeling form the attacks by Cozy, Chrysalis, and Tirek, Twilight and Nova are forced to leap into action once again, to stop Envy before she can acquire the mythical Gems of Being, and use them to assemble the Crown of Life.

And on top of all of this, Envy isn't the only one who wants to assemble the Crown. Someone else is after it too. And if he acquires all of them, it could mean the true end of all things.

Racing against time and against their enemies, and battling themselves just as much as their foes, Nova and Twilight, his apprentice Bright Gleam, as well as their friends Aegis, Trixie, the Princesses, Star Swirl, and Sharp Eye, have their work cut out for them. They must find these Gems of Being first, or at the very least, keep them out of the hooves of Envy and the other mysterious being, in order to win a battle that will determine the very fate of the entire world, and everyone in it.

Aria will protect her cousin from anything, even if she is a burden, especially when it comes to the newcomer to their duo, a siren filly named Adagio Dazzle with plans of her own. Soon Aria finds her words falling on deaf ears now that Sonata is entranced by the charismatic Adagio, who takes Aria's role as leader and guides the two the far north.

But Aria can't leave, even if her cousin is a burden because Sonata's all Aria has left, even if it means putting up with a wolf bearing the likeness of a sheep and all the heartbreak that comes with it.

Starswirl has invented the perfect time travel spell. With it, he can visit anytime, anyplace throughout all of history. Celestia, deciding that his new spell is a terrible idea, tries to prevent him from using it before he does something ridiculous. Unfortunately, the first thing he decides to mess with is all of history. After all, nothing can go wrong when you're fixing all of your forefathers' mistakes.
