Celestia awakens in a strange new place, her back aching with throbbing pain. The diagrams on the wall look like spines, but not pony ones. Was that a place to find help, or was something far more worrying afoot?

Celestia has been raising the sun later in the day than normal, and setting it earlier than usual. Luna wants to find out why and help her sister with whatever problem she's facing. But help can be hard to give when your sister is in the middle of a depressive spell that will last for weeks more, one that she always faces at this time of year, every year.

Everypony knows that Celestia is the princess of Equestria. She's been one for as long as anypony could remember, and she will probably be for generations to come. Some would even argue that there is no 'Celestia' without the 'princess' before it.

And yet, this morning Celestia has no idea why she is a princess, and her subjects have no idea why she isn't being one.

For the longest time, Celestia had spent Hearth's Warming Eve the same way.

Alone.

Well, at least until a certain purple filly comes along.

After Equestria faced a crippling tragedy, the dozens of petty lords, who until then all counted their remaining days, suddenly set their sights with renewed malice on how they could get rid of the one remaining pony who threatened their rule.

Some didn't shy away from even the most despicable of methods, changing a colt's life forever.

Chrysalis' scheme has borne fruit. United by bribes and promises, the leaders of each nation have come with her to deliver an ultimatum: surrender Equestria, or face hopeless war with their combined armies.

So why does Celestia look to Chrysalis with a gentle, mourning gaze? And why is Chrysalis afraid?

In the midst of a horrifying tragedy, Princess Celestia reflects on her life, on how she could have descended so low, and if recovery is even a possibility.

It’s midnight in Canterlot.

All the ponies have turned in for the night, and the city’s lights are shutting off. The moon now casts its face over the city. Princess Celestia’s duties are over for the day, but she feels empty. Her best friend, who is a human, Marcus, goes to cheer her up. His plan takes a mischievous turn when he takes her on a quick stroll to get away, if only for an hour.

Under the radiant moonlight, the heart’s true feelings are revealed.
