As a master of alchemy most of his abilities relieve on martial arts and his alchemy abilities; but his own body without knowing its magic itself due to fact that in his pass he crossed the "Door of Truth" a place forbidden for those before him. As a taboo, alchemy is a type of magic eradicated from Equestria by the Princess after the incident with Princess Luna. Do to his past Edward never experienced what was truly love or friendship.
