Honestly, aside from the killing thing, which I have a theory on anyways, she really did seem like a normal bully in the first movie.
As for my theory, I think the corrupted magic from the element basically broke her mind and filled her with raw anger, making her attempt to kill the girls.
Even pre-redemption, Sunset does not seem like the type that would go as far as killing.
