You have so many moments here that would not be out of place in a horror story — Fluttershy looking at the camera or knocking on the window — but the tone of her character is always playful as she brings some colour into Marcus’ grey life. I hope the bat pony is OK, though...
And it's attitudes like this that make me fear for if we ever do make first contact.

...and the funny thing is, like a lot of my stories, this tale went in a direction of its own. I seriously did not plan to explore this aspect of Human/pony interaction, but as I've mentioned before when I write, I sometimes enter a fugue state where I feel I'm not actually writing but I'm describing events I'm seeing in my head. It's as if I'm channeling scenes from another place.
Weird, I know...or maybe I'm just crazy. Anyway, Jackson and his father's reactions aren't too different from what I imagine the real reactions of today's Human's would be to talking, sapient equines.

Most likely because of those that see them as aliens and potentially harmful. Leash implies control - the people and ponies involved with the actual cultural mixing know better, but it's security theater for the nervous masses.
