Tainted Love

Chrysalis disguised as an unicorn was just sitting in ponyville park. She was not feeding on the abundant love around her. She wasn't attacking ponies and encasing them in cocoons, in fact all that she was doing was watching the ponies go on about their business on this Hearts and Hooves day. Starlight knew that she was up to something but she hadn't moved or done anything other then watch pony couples and it was driving Starlight crazy.

I have always have this head-canon where Chrysalis and Sombra are the ponies from the love poison story.

Chrysalis was the Queen of the Crystal Empire, and Sombra an artificer from the Shadow realm. Sombra fell in love with the Queen at first sight, but she didn't felt the same way. So, in his desperation to win her hearth, he created the poison and gave it to her as a gift. After drinking it, she fell in love with him and they got married (Hence why "King" Sombra). After a while, the Queen started to fell the absolute need to be loved. Feeding from the love of her husband first, and when that wasn't enough, she fed from the love of her subjects.
The king was a jealous pony, and when he noticed her wife seeking love from others, he set his mind to 'fix' the situation. He used his black magic to create creatures that could steal the love her wife needed, surrendering all of it and asking nothing in return. They were creatures of shadows, that would obey any command given to them, and for a time, this was enough.
But black magic always has a heavy price, and the one paying it will be the Queen. She started to change every time she fed on the love provided by these creatures. Her coat began to darken, her eyes slithered like a dragon, and fangs grew on her mouth. Soon, her beautiful crystalline wings became dull and ugly. She became a shadow of what she was before. This would not do it for the king. This... "thing" was not the mare he fell in love with. So he began searching. Soon enough, he found a spell that the Queen could use. A spell that could make her look like a princess again, retake her previous, loving self, even if it was only on the outside.
This was not going to be a forever fix, and the King knew it, so he started researching mind magic. He would need to create a device so powerful and so full of love, that her wife wouldn't never feel the hunger for love again, and it would restore her body to what it was. After a long time experimenting, he manage to create a device that would take the energy from their subjects and give it to his wife. He created the Crystal Hearth. A wonder for the ages. This device will take the love freely given and concentrate it so it could be consumed by the Queen. Now it only needed some way to gather it.

And that's all that I got so far.
