This story is a sequel to Silver Spanner, Journeymare

After a day of working remodeling a home, Ambrosia and Silver Spanner bond by watching the annual Ponyville Pony Pull.

A Pony Planet Story

Yay, I've been waiting for this one for a long time.

Now to read it.

Closer to the course, a brightly-colored showpony’s wagon was parked behind the far row of bales, with a temporary stage jutting out of the side of it.

Is Trixie in town?

You know I didn't realise that your Silver stories were set in the past relative to the series at the moment, I did wonder why AJ or even Dash wasn't competing. I would be surprised if a Pony pull was one of the 'Iron Pony' contests we didn't see in Fall Weather Friends.

Well looks like Apple Bread won't be getting laid tonight but depending on his age it looks like Mac might. Maybe the huggy filly's Cheerilee.

Nice to see more bonding between Ambrosia and Silver Spanner I'm sure they'll be quite the team after a few years. Also your detail of common pony life is as charming as ever, the things for sale, the prices, the harnesses all wonderful background.

Well worth the wait.

How many did Mac pull, though? All we know is something-and-a-half.

Nice Story.

Ambrosia looked where she was pointing. “McIntosh. He's Jonagold's foal.”
“He's gonna be big.” She looked thoughtfully at the yoke on his back. “Is he competing?
“I guess so. If he does, he's gonna win something.”

'something' :rainbowwild:

7682610 3 1/2 Stones. It already had 3 on it from the pull before, and only 1/2 a stone was added.

Jonagold ain't got shit on Onyx/Ash if he were competing, though he does not exist in this world, so Jonagold is safe, lol.

7682552

It made it sound like it was Applejack who was hugging Big Mac. I could be wrong.

Dyno, short for Dynamometer, that which all else is measured against. :trollestia:

Wonder what sorts of cutie marks there would be not just for haulage, but for shere brute force pulling power, like Cranes ?

7682640

Flexing muscles? A bulls head? A full stone boat?

7682637

Nope now that I've found out that gamboge is a shade of orange it does sound like it's AJ.

Oh well.

7682747

I just realized you made a reference to this story way back in 2015 with the Silver Spanner, Journeymare story when Ambrosia still didn't really like her. I totally forgot it was there and just thought this was another story about her later on in their friendship.

I might have been re-reading it for the hell of it to figure that out. :twilightsheepish:

You've got too many Silvers trotting around your stories ;b
Just re-read Journeymare to get into the spirit again, just as nice as I remembered. This here is a beautiful slice of life! The amount of detail is amazing... you sure had fun piecing all that country-town life together, didn't you? It just feels so real and is so easy to envision, especially since you already have built the background in other stories so that you recognize characters making an appearance (or being talked about). Could read about this for days. Also, of course: Silver Spanner, best craftspony.

Apple Bread is an asshat, but it's probably going a little far to say that he's not good at pulling. A pony who wasn't any good at all wouldn't even be competing. Then again, Silver and Ambrosia are probably venting a little steam over his asshattery, so they're being salty.

How many stones can Mac do now that he's grown? I'm guessing that his main competition now is Bulk Biceps. Actually, how many did Dyno pull for his championship?

So, how many years are we before the return of Princess Luna?

7682839
Corrections made, thank you!

Excellent. I was hoping to see more of Spanner's early struggles to fit in. Well done, Admiral.:yay:

7682628
3 1/2 just doesn't sound like enough for the crowd to get as excited as they did, not after seeing 7 1/2 earlier. And the announcer had just said that they'll need to reload the stone boat...adding half a slab doesn't jibe with that wording.

In other news I just went back and read Silver's first story, and wow, Ambrosia has a lot of nerve. Kicking Apple Bread for saying that a unicorn plumber wasn't right, when she herself said the exact same thing behind Silver's back just yesterday? Dang.

7685947 Those were two full grown stallions pulling the 7's, one failed to do 5, the next at 5 1/2, and the third failed at 6. The pair before him was two mares and they were only able to do 3 stones as ateam. McIntosh is just a young colt in this story, so him to be able to pull 3 1/2 is a pretty big.

7685947
Yeah, I went back to reread the earlier story and that part struck me too- how quickly Ambrosia's attitude changed. Maybe it would've been better if the pull was a week after that workday.

Silver Spanner is one of my favorite characters of yours. Thanks for showing us more of her! I'd love to see more, whenever your muse strikes!

Dyno, here, is Equestria’s former champ, and he’s graciously agreed to help up all our and show anypony who hasn’t seen one before how it’s done.

This needs some clarity.

I love the verse by the way. You're attention to detail is amazing and informative.
Love Silver, she is such a round peg in a square hole kinda pony.
I also like how things come across as more down to earth and realistic in how ponies interact with objects in the world.

Interesting that AJ's mother isn't present.

7690599

I suspect it's supposed to be "help us all out," but had to think about it a bit too.

I hadn't actually realized OPP stories were set well before the TV series until now! Or are they spread across a longer period of time? A chronology might be nice in your copious spare time :-)

I reviewed this story as part of Read It Now Reviews #99.

My review can be found here.

And no, this isn't the bribe either. :rainbowwild:

7682552

Is Trixie in town?

Nope, but she's not the only one who has a wagon like that--lots of performers do.

You know I didn't realise that your Silver stories were set in the past relative to the series at the moment, I did wonder why AJ or even Dash wasn't competing. I would be surprised if a Pony pull was one of the 'Iron Pony' contests we didn't see in Fall Weather Friends.

Yeah, 'cause in CSI/OPP, she's a grown mare. This series deals with her fillyhood, and her growing up and becoming the plumber that we know and love.

Well looks like Apple Bread won't be getting laid tonight but depending on his age it looks like Mac might. Maybe the huggy filly's Cheerilee.

Nope, the huggy filly is Applejack. Big Mac's a little bit young to be thinking about mares. . . .

Nice to see more bonding between Ambrosia and Silver Spanner I'm sure they'll be quite the team after a few years. Also your detail of common pony life is as charming as ever, the things for sale, the prices, the harnesses all wonderful background.

Well worth the wait.

Hopefully the comment reply was. :derpytongue2: I happened to be re-reading this story today and I suddenly realized that I never replied to comments.

7682610

3 1/2, like Topaz said.

7682628

7682637

It's AJ. I thought that 'gamboge' was enough of a giveaway, but I guess some people don't know what color that is (and to be fair, I didn't until I saw it in another story, referencing AJ's color--who says that a grown man can't learn a thing or two from stories about ponies).

7682640

Dyno, short for Dynamometer, that which all else is measured against. :trollestia:

Well, yeah; that's why he's the one that demonstrates how it's done.

Wonder what sorts of cutie marks there would be not just for haulage, but for sheer brute force pulling power, like Cranes ?

That's a good question. Heck, given that Equestria seems on the cusp of an industrial revolution, it's interesting to think about what kind of cutie marks might be coming along in the future.

7682905

I just realized you made a reference to this story way back in 2015 with the Silver Spanner, Journeymare story when Ambrosia still didn't really like her. I totally forgot it was there and just thought this was another story about her later on in their friendship.

I was gonna write this story back in 2015, but I didn't . . . . It's not the only story that I thought about writing--even planned out, sorta, and then never quite got around to it for a while.

Funny story, today I was thinking about polishing up and finishing an old RD fic I've got from four years ago. I can't remember if it's any good, though, nor what it was called.

I might have been re-reading it for the hell of it to figure that out. :twilightsheepish:

I wouldn't've been replying to these comments, except I was re-reading today and realized that I never did first time around. I'm a bad pony.

7683282

You've got too many Silvers trotting around your stories ;b

I know. Can't be helped; that's the kind of thing that happens with pony names, y'know?

Just re-read Journeymare to get into the spirit again, just as nice as I remembered.

That's one nice thing about mostly having lived in small towns--that's one thing that I know about. Every one I've lived in has had its own little festivals and traditions that the townsfolk all come out for.

And that's one thing that I like about writing stories in the OPP-verse--I know all of the important characters, and it's like visiting home to write about them.

Could read about this for days. Also, of course: Silver Spanner, best craftspony.

Apple Bread is an asshat, but it's probably going a little far to say that he's not good at pulling. A pony who wasn't any good at all wouldn't even be competing.

He's okay at pulling--he's not a champion, by any means, but he's certainly better than a lot of ponies who didn't even compete.

Then again, Silver and Ambrosia are probably venting a little steam over his asshattery, so they're being salty.

Oh, yeah, totally. It's hard to get sympathy from the mares when you've been an asshat right in front of them.

Also, Google recognizes 'asshattery' as a real word, which makes me really happy.

How many stones can Mac do now that he's grown? I'm guessing that his main competition now is Bulk Biceps.

Bulk's big and strong, but I kind of think that maybe it's more show than actual work. Plus, he's not an earth pony . . . I'd expect that Big Mac could probably beat him in a pulling contest, but it might be really close. As for how many he can do? Well, he can probably pull as many as his dad; after all, we know he can pull a house.

Here's the thing, though--I'm not sure that he'd try to beat his dad's record, unless somepony else beat it first.

Actually, how many did Dyno pull for his championship?

Probably eight or nine, maybe ten. The thing about the used millstones is that they probably aren't all the same weight, regardless of where you go. So it might be that there isn't really an official record of it, at least not when it comes to small-town competitions like this one. Probably there are more sanctioned events, where they have set weights and everything else like that.

7683938

So, how many years are we before the return of Princess Luna?

Less than a dozen--CSI/OPP take place a couple* of years after the return of NMM, and I figure that right now, Silver and Ambrosia are both in their prime working years. Maybe by the present, Hydro's retired, or cut back on how much he works, and Silver's gotten a good reputation in town.

Some of it would depend on your headcanon, though--in this story, Apple Bloom isn't born yet, so depending on how old you figure she is, you can put a pretty good date on the story from that.
_____________________________________________________________________________
*somewhere between two and three, probably--canon's kinda loose when it comes to the passage of years.

7684121

Yeah, but he's just a little colt. And to ask for more weight right from the get-go . . . he's got some stones, if you know what I mean.

In other news I just went back and read Silver's first story, and wow, Ambrosia has a lot of nerve. Kicking Apple Bread for saying that a unicorn plumber wasn't right, when she herself said the exact same thing behind Silver's back just yesterday? Dang.

In the previous story, she also threw something at one of the other construction ponies after she insulted Silver, and she'd threatened to walk off the job if the foremare booted Silver. So she's changed her mind, admitted to herself that she was wrong, and now she's in 'defending her friend' mode.

7686497

Yeah, I went back to reread the earlier story and that part struck me too- how quickly Ambrosia's attitude changed. Maybe it would've been better if the pull was a week after that workday.

The thing is, from some stubborn people I've known, when they change their minds on something, they go all in on it. Once Silver became Ambrosia's friend, Ambrosia would back her up in anything, regardless of what she'd said or thought the day before.

7690367

Silver Spanner is one of my favorite characters of yours. Thanks for showing us more of her!

Thank you!

I'd love to see more, whenever your muse strikes!

I will be sure to--she's a really fun character.

7692618

I hadn't actually realized OPP stories were set well before the TV series until now! Or are they spread across a longer period of time? A chronology might be nice in your copious spare time :-)

They're spread over a somewhat long period of time.

A quick chronology would be Silver Spanner stories, A Gift from Celestia, The Pony Pull, Stained Glass, Heather Rose, Apple Honey's Perfectly Ordinary Day, The Trek to Ice Cream Rock, stories with Noi and/or Carrot Top, then CSI/OPP. That's not an exact list, but it's close.

I'll consider making a chronology, but I'm not sure when I'll get to it.

7690599

This needs some clarity.

That's a typo--it should have read:
"he’s graciously agreed to help us all out and show anypony who hasn’t seen one before how it’s done."

I love the verse by the way. You're attention to detail is amazing and informative.

They're a lot of fun to write. I love the day-to-day life of Ponyville ponies.

Love Silver, she is such a round peg in a square hole kinda pony.

She is, isn't she? Still, a mare's gotta do what she loves.

I also like how things come across as more down to earth and realistic in how ponies interact with objects in the world

That's one thing I've always had fun figuring out--how things would actually work in Equestria, and what kinds of things would be important to them.

7692171

Interesting that AJ's mother isn't present.

Unless I had in mind that she was back at the farm, pregnant with Apple Bloom (which might have been in my head), she's there, along with Granny Smith. She just didn't get mentioned.

Silver Glow Journal Part 2 the Megan Chroncles when?

Ah, this takes me back. It's been what? 24 weeks since I made that comment?

Yeah, I completely forgot to reply to comments on the story. Just noticed yesterday :derpytongue2:

There's probably some that I missed on Silver Glow's Journal, too, but there are way too many chapters to look through to find them.

Silver Glow Journal Part 2 the Megan Chronicles when?

Erm, I dunno. I've got some other stuff I've got to work on first; both story stuff and IRL stuff.

Loved this story and it's prequel, and loved silver spanner, there are more of her?
Also, damn you are good at creating oc's

Thanks!

Silver Spanner is the main character in Silver Spanner Gets her Cutie Mark as well, and she also makes occasional appearances in Onto the Pony Planet.

King Moriarty has one Silver Spanner story as well, The Joy of Garbage. And there's a few other ones, as well, although I haven't read any of them. She's not a very popular character, but I really like her.

Also, damn you are good at creating oc's

Thanks again! I can't take full credit--nearly all of my OCs are obscure background ponies that I just characterize, because nobody else does.

Just as a quick question; are all of your non-HiE stories (apart from CSI/OPP) set in the pony planet 'verse? Not necessarily needing a hard chronology, and dubious connection is not an issue.

8475593

Just as a quick question; are all of your non-HiE stories (apart from CSI/OPP) set in the pony planet 'verse? Not necessarily needing a hard chronology, and dubious connection is not an issue.

No, but there's a certain amount of headcanon overlap in general. Either because I'm lazy, or because I just like writing in the magic-steampunk sort of era.

Silver Glow's Journal, for example, shares a lot of the tech underpinnings and worldbuilding in CSI/OPP, but does not follow that canon exactly. I suppose if you considered HiE and PoE to be kinda interchangeable, though, it would be eliminated by your first question.

Hmm.

It's actually something I hadn't really thought about too much.

So, if you took out Human, Comedy, Equestria Girls, and Random, the only stories that wouldn't fit into the CSI/OPP -verse is Scootaloo Finds a Truck in the Everfree Forest and The Many Faces of a Showpony. A few (Diamond Tiara Dies Alone and Important Differences wouldn't fit well, but are plausible, and to the best of my recollection don't contradict anything in CSI or OPP).

8475647
Thank you, that was just the thing I was hoping you would say. Now, I'm off to mark more stories to read later. Loving the work so far, and I hope that you find the inspiration to continue your unfinished bits.

8475759
I'm actually kinda glad you asked that question; it's something I'd never thought of.

I will say that I just searched by tags. I didn't get in-depth in the story collections, so you're kind of on your own there. For example, one of the Prompt-A-Day collections has a story which is CSI/OPP canon, and some of the others might. I honestly can't remember.

Loving the work so far, and I hope that you find the inspiration to continue your unfinished bits.

I'm hoping to have an update to OPP by the end of October, and also finish Stained Glass by then. I don't know about A Gift from Celestia--I want to finish that, but right now I have too many other irons in the fire. I've currently got four different fics I'm working on, one of which I'd like to get to pre-readers by the end of the week.

I see you've updated this to give MacIntosh's father his canon name.

8513919
I did! I also made the appropriate changes in the blog post.

8539993
I coulda ninjaed it in, and then leave people wondering if I'd known all along, or if I was just some sort of genius.:pinkiehappy:

I like this! Had a very creative take on old school tractor pulling. You should have had it be even older where ponies would step onto the sled as a certain distance was crossed. Very cool story though!

I like this! Had a very creative take on old school tractor pulling.

Thank you!

Although did you know that pony and horse pulls are still a thing, too? Sometimes these days they use dynometers (which is the only way I've seen them), but other times they use cement blocks.

You should have had it be even older where ponies would step onto the sled as a certain distance was crossed. Very cool story though!

That would be another way to do it, although I think it would be harder to score. That sounds more like the schoolyard way of doing things--sort of like bodybuilders who lift people instead of weights. (It's also probably harder with ponies on the stone-boat, because I would think that it would make a difference if the ponies stood in front or in back.)

8630512
I do suppose you are right, And I have heard of the horse pulls haha its a great test of team skills and the pairings of horses.

8630521
It's probably easier with magical ponies, 'cause they're trying to win. Although seeing some of the draft horses doing it, they really dig in and pull hard, too.
