Just a random writer writing my thoughts.

T

Dash's friends ask her an important question. However, it's an awkward one. And the answer is even more awkward. Oops.

In my actual headcanon I ship Dash with Twilight, but I thought it would be funny to write a story about straight!Rainbow Dash. So...here you go. Rated teen just in case.

Chapters (1)

Most of this story was written in italics, accidentally, I believe

Rainbow Dash is straight? That's unlike, well... The complete rest of Equestria. :rainbowlaugh:

:rainbowdetermined2: I honestly don't see Rainbow as a lesbian. Just because she's not into the traditional girly stuff like fashion or tea parties doesn't make her gay, it makes her stand out as a Tom-Boy, thus she's refusing to be defined as the clichéd token girl stereotype (Unlike Rarity and Fluttershy, who both occasionally enjoy the girly stuff the most). Personally, I view Rainbow more as a Heterosexual, a mare that puts the needs of others before her own, someone who isn't a slut or a braindead monkey, a sister to Fluttershy and Scootaloo (Cadence maybe, but that'll never happen in the show), and Finally, a great companion to all of her friends and those that she's sworn to protect. :rainbowdetermined2:

And this story proves my point. Which is why I give it a like and a fav. :rainbowkiss:

I don't see RD as homosexual, or any of the characters in the series, to be frank. It's about the most stereotypical thing in this fandom that I can think of to portray her as such, just because of her rainbow mane, and honestly there are a lot of tomboys out there that are straight.

Applejack and Fluttershy can attract stallions or mares.
Pinkie Pie can dominate stallions or mares.
Rarity has a bad reputation of stallions or mares.
Rainbow Dash may or may said that she swung straight, same, or both ways.
Princess Twilight loves books.

Honestly, I've always thought of Rainbow as straight, and I say that as someone with zero problems shipping lesbian ponies. I dunno, she just doesn't give me that impression.

Now, Fluttershy, that's a different story.

I've not found a single fic exploring the topic that hasn't pegged Pinkie Pie as pansexual. Heck, it's even on the LGBT group's banner. Evidently, if RD is a stereotypical lesbian, Pinkie is a stereotypical pansexual. And, more often than not, Twilight is ace.

:moustache: Pan-sexual? Pinkie loves kitchen appliances and what nots? :duck: Come with me my Spikey Poo...
:facehoof: It gets so confusing now days...

This. I always find it amusing whenever somebody tries to say that Rainbow Dash should be a lesbian because it'd 'break stereotypes' yet don't realise that the reason Dash became so often portrayed as homosexual in the first place was because of lesbian stereotypes.

7579076 Kind of like Misty from Pokémon Generations 1 and 2, and Daisy from the Super Mario Franchise. They're Tom-Boys and they get shipped with dudes all the time.

Pffft. Okay, okay. I can forgive the spelling and grammar errors for how hilarious Pinkie and AJ were. They only had two lines a piece. How did you do that?!

This story was meh... until Pinkie's last line; that was funny. Admittedly it's kind of a cliche in itself to have Pinkie be an "out-there" orientation, though I understand fans' reasoning (even if I don't reach the same conclusions).

The only FxF ship I regularly board is Applejack & Rarity, and even there I imagine them both using an "if it's you it's okay" logic. So… I guess I see them as bi? The only other character I envision as something nontraditional is Apple Bloom, as part of my headcanon of her being the eventual black sheep of the family. Problem for her is I imagine her crushing chiefly on somewhat-older straight mares/girls.

You've laid it out beautifully. And yeah, I've always seen RD as straight-as-an-arrow.

Not bad, but not great. The theme is great and has a lot of comedic opportunity, and you're able to open and put together the scene well enough, but the delivery feels somewhat stilted. To elaborate a little, there are a few things that stand out.

The flashback comes out of nowhere and doesn't really contribute; the follow-up makes it clear that Dash is recounting it as a story, but it's not introduced as such, and it really only serves to show another time when the question was asked. Indeed, it gets something of a Shaggy Dog ending; Derpy's reaction isn't stated, Dash's reaction isn't explored, it's just sort of there and then ends. Was Muffins disappointed? Relieved? Amused? We don't know; Dash laughs and books it. Yes, it does establish the catchphrase, but it doesn't do much else where it could have.

The ending of the actual story is much the same; while you try to wind to a punchline with Pinkie's exclamation, it comes to more of a halt than an ending. You had a nice little bit of denouement with the ponies getting ashamed and Dash waving it off, but their reasoning - the point behind it all - isn't explored and their continued awkwardness sort of seems kind of tacked on. Essentially, the story has "Let's ask Rainbow Dash if she's gay", but doesn't reach past it to "Because of X, let's ask if Rainbow Dash is gay"; even if it's based on nothing more than burning curiosity or misunderstandings, those both stand to be explored a little further or highlighted, which could have made the lingering awkwardness more understandable, and given you ground for Pinkie's "big reveal". Similarly, even a little more to justify the awkwardness and fleeing would do well; after Dash's says "Plus, you all are my friends. That would suck if you didn't have the best intentions at heart." you could easily make it clear that they feel they actually didn't (if that's the case) by having them exchange glances, look guilty, or so forth. As written, a hug and a friendship lesson could have just as easily followed that line instead. You don't have to be explicit, and shouldn't simply state rather than revealing ("show, don't tell"), but motivation is as important for the audience identifying with a character or characters as action, if not moreso.

Both AJ and Pinkie get Flanderized in the story; it works for AJ, but not as much for Pinkie. Now it's understood; this is a short story, and a thousand words isn't exactly prime real estate for massive character development and depth. Because of that it's fine to simplify characters a bit and excusable to only be able to show some of their character. With AJ, this is done well; characterizing her as bluntly honest is amusing because it it's a caricature, yet also fits and supports the story. With Pinkie, it's the reverse; her canonical randomness tends to go somewhere, even if it's on a completely different track then everyone else, but in this story she only serves to either be random for its own sake or to be annoying. Her randomness can contribute to a story by moving things along, providing reveals, providing comic relief, or various other things, but in this one it's just a brief complication in the first case and a stab at a joke in the second - but both could have been more contributory instead.

For example, in the first case where she cried out "I'm out-of-the-ordinary!", it could be followed by a realization that she basically just volunteered. Even flanderdizing her as loud and annoying (if that's what you're going for), she could have shouted it, paused, and then added "But I don't want to be the one to ask!"; even though it's stalling, it's stalling that contributes to the story rather than simply being there. In the case of the final joke, you could either do more to set up Dash's own growing awkwardness and then have the joke play in to capitalize on that, focus on Dash's confusion at Pinkie not feeling particularly awkward, or set it up as the final result of Pinkie trying and failing to contain the awkwardness she's experiencing. As is, it seems like you were sort of going for the latter, but as "smiling stupidly" doesn't explicitly call to awkwardness (as opposed to forced smiles, brittle smiles, sheepish smiles, or so forth), Pinkie doesn't seem to have much basis for her "guess what?" opening or the punchline that follows. As mentioned above, this could also be improved by the five's motivations being explored or indicated a bit more beforehand.

Again, I must stress that it's not bad; please don't be discouraged by this. It's a modest little narrative that gets from point A to point B, It's descriptive without being purple prose (and the little jokes, like RD's alcoholism, are quite amusing), the concept is plenty funny, it gets a few digs in based on established character traits, and it's clear what you were going for. But it relies too much on the situation itself being funny and not enough on the narrative itself, to the point that it basically repeats itself in the flashback. There's more you could do with it while staying a short story.

7579696 basically it is the same thing as being bi

Eh, it was okay. I came looking for a fic where Rainbow Dash's 5 friends invited her to a warm, candle-lit dinner on the cutie map, batting their eyes and blowing kisses at her until somepony finally works up enough nerve to pop the question. And then when Dash answers she doesn't swing that way, the candles go out, the lighting brightens, and the other five all look at each other with embarassment and uncertainty. And Dash is like "So...cider, anypony?" and they all immediately leave and find something else to do.

Dash shouts to the heavens, "Doesn't anypony want to be friends for some reason other than getting under my tail?"

"I do!" Derpy shouts from the window up there.

"No you don't!"

"Oh... yeah." :derpytongue2:

Honestly, while I don't mind shipfics where RD IS a lesbian (heck, I've got a fair number of those faved), I personally prefer RD being straight for the most part.
The vast majority of shipfics I have faved are SoarinDash, with ScootaDash being the not-so-close second.

Soviet Dash Malashenka: Finally, a doppelganger of mine who ISN'T gay for once. Well, no Pegasus Device Gulag for you.
