Without them, Magic would have no limits, no moral prerequisites to its use and no master

Wow, I never thought about the element of magic like being held down by the other elements. Thinking about though it makes a lot of sense.

thoughts about just what what it is that you

er "what" not "what what"?

"You're mutants."

FWIW, I suspect that the Humane Six directly evolved into what took the Mane Six four seasons - to be magical avatars of their element. They literally are the magical forces of Laughter, Loyalty and so on.

What is 'magic'? The term 'bio-etheric energy', used in the film Final Fantasy - The Spirit Within, comes to mind. It is literally an energy field created by their living cells that they can store and then release in a fairly narrow number of ways. I imagine that, with time, they will learn other capabilities that may or may not mimic the racial powers of their pony equivalents.

Note: Feathers, hooves and horns all contain large amounts of the fibrous protein keratin. I'd look for anomalous keratin growths within the girls' bodies to determine where their foci are located. The skin has large concentrations as does hair and nails.

Science Note: Keratin is also associated with the body's immune system. So it is quite possible that the girls may be practically immune to any kind of disease.

I'll be honest, I came in expecting a typical headcanon dump and I'm happy to say I was wrong. I mean, this story could definitely be considered one, but the solid characterization and setting-appropriate humor fleshed it out so well that it doesn't feel thin or cheap like they often do. If you're going to dump your headcanon on people, this is the the way to do it, :ajsmug:

I also really liked the repetition of Sunset's 'what happens when you bring an Element of Harmony into an alternate world' line in the opening and closing; it served as a great way to bookend the tale, kinda like what Turkish's 'what do I know about diamonds' line does from the movie Snatch, :twistnerd:

Oh, c'mon, we can do better than that, :pinkiecrazy:

Thanks. When I started this, I never expected it would be solid enough to be worth sharing. I was surprised when it wound up turning into something I actually liked reading, and I'm glad you like it too.

The whole thing about Sunset being able to use the crown only made sense to me when I looked at it that way. To put it as succinctly as I can, Friendship is Magic, but Magic is not always Friendship.

Great little short story here. Really liked it and the new ideas you have on the world here. Especially your thoughts on the element of magic and how that happened. The idea of permanent genetic mutation in the girls also is a great idea and make a ton of sense in my mind. :rainbowdetermined2:

7218267 That's a pretty good explanation. Mine has been that with so little magic in the human world, the universe has no "resistance" to it, so even a bit of ambient magic just being radiated off of the Element, so small that nopony could have measured it in Equestria due to the background interference, was enough for Sunset to harness. When Twilight and her friends used it, the Element was "partially" activated, or put into a standby mode while reaching out for the absent other Elements, which was enough to both defeat Sunset and mutate the humans so they could properly process and control it.

If they had used all six, it would have reshaped the galaxy. It also might be contagious, spreading through those emotionally close to them over time.

Does this mean we need to dedicate our band to protecting a world that hates and fears us?”

I dunno. Before Homo Sapiens came on the scene there were a half a dozen hominid species walking around. After we showed up there was one. We don't get along well with our close relatives is what I'm saying.

"You're mutants."

“Does this mean we need to dedicate our band to protecting a world that hates and fears us?”

:rainbowderp: ...oh my gosh: this series IS turning into an X-men crossover...

“Does this mean we need to dedicate our band to protecting a world that hates and fears us?”

Of course, Pinkie Pie would be the one to make that reference. :rainbowlaugh:

In addition, we often see humans in media casting magic through our fingertips, which have the same buildup of keratin. Perhaps there’s a connection here? :pinkiegasp:

"They don't. this is from home."

Neat story. I’ve never seen this concept before so props for originality. 8/10, not bad. 👍

I was looking for this.

Favorited a fair few stories (and saw far more than the acceptable quotient of Beanis Cinematic, which is “never more than none in ever” for me) before I rediscovered it.

Bio-Ether...

Now that's a useful term!
