Saddlesoap Opera is a Canadian Brony who loves to write and read fiction of nearly all kinds.

In search of gems to complete her ornate Nightmare Night costume, Rarity accidentally finds herself transported to a world where a holiday not unlike Nightmare Night is less an event than a way of life - and her friends soon follow in hopes of rescuing her. Or, to put things more lyrically....

It was some time ago, but not too long, you see?
In a place that perhaps you have seen on TV.

For this story spans places far from pedestrian,
Crossing spooky and dark with bright and Equestrian.

Now, you may be asking how that crossing was done.
If you are not, I'd say it's time you begun!

(An excellent talking-book version of this story can be found here.)

Luna's olde english speaking habits (and creepy habitr of saying we, and us when she's talking about herself)
WE MUST HAVE MORE :pinkiehappy:

I guess you could call the ring of trees...
*puts on sunglasses*

The Hub...
great now it's so dark I can't see! Stupid glasses!
Anyways, great, great idea for a cross over....now I need to go watch that movie again...bye!

AWESOME!! YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE!! also good reference to capt america.

The verse at the beginning of Nightmare Before Christmas actually starts "Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems..." not "but not too long, you see?"
Sorry, it's just that it's one of my favorite movies and I wanted to clarify the issue.

Yes...I was aware of that. It's one of my favourites, too.
But the rhyme was rewritten. ...Just like the rest of the poem. :rainbowhuh:

One more thing I have to say is "Aww, you had this take place after the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas?" I was hoping it would be more like Kingdom Hearts, where they enter the other characters' world and have their own adventure that is similar to the one from the actual movie but is not exactly the same and leaves one to assume that in this interpretation the events of the actual movie had never actually happened as they had. I was looking forward to seeing how the ponies would react to and face-off against Oogie Boogie. I assume you do intend to introduce some new villain to fill in for Oogie, but it just doesn't seem like it'll be the same without him.

Yep, I'm definitely watching this 'un. Great read, as usual, Saddlesoap. I can't wait to see more! :pinkiehappy:

Brilliant! Luna is amazing, Rarity is amazing, everything is amazing!

So much yes! :rainbowkiss:

This is funny as hell! Keep this story up I can't wait for chapter 2!

I've just been listening to Manson's cover of This is Halloween for the past day or so, so this is very well timed. Enough talk, LET'S DO THIS

Since this takes place after the movie, Is this based on the videogame?

:facehoof: I'd like to apologize on this gentleman's behalf.

On topic, though, it was only a matter of time until somepony wrote this. I'm just glad it was somepony who actually knows what they're doing.

The only thing stopping me from giving this a full mark is because Rarity says “crime against fashion” instead of "crime against FABULOSITY".

But otherwise combining two of my favorite things ever makes me a happy fella.

It cracked me up how when Zecora entered the scene, my mind started reading the text in her voice as soon as I noticed the rhyme.:rainbowlaugh:

>Joie de mourir
>Accurate Early Modern English instead of just throwing a few thous in there and calling it a day
>Zecora speaking Swahili
>Interesting plot
>Everyone perfectly in character

Watching this one like a griffin.

The royal "we" was extrememly common in usage by the nobility in any accurate fantasy setting et cetera.
Today, it is still used by the Queen of England, the Netherlands, and another handful of remaining European royals. :derpytongue2:

♫♥I look forward to reading what happens next in your story♥♪

This pony. All about Ponies. All about Nightmare Before Christmas. You, my good sir, have just gained a life long fan. :raritystarry: Or however long you want, I heed your beck and call.

One thing though: I got every door, with my own logic, but the insect with the bull's-eye. Mind explaining to a weaker mind?

I need to hurry up and watch that movie.

Certainly. That one was Starship Troopers. :pinkiehappy:

Okay - this is sufficiently awesome. I feel slightly bad, though, that I'm more looking forward to Celestia's reaction when they come back than to anything else. Especially with how Rarity is about to go all royalty obsessed (which aught to be good for a laugh).

Delightful! Also--"joie de mourir." Perfect.

It helps that I watched this movie three times today. (Had to try out the Spanish and French translations, don't you know!"

When is the next update? I really want to see what happens next

Working on it! Want to be sure it's up to snuff, after the great reception this part received!

“OKAY! Let’s do this!” Twilight took a deep breath, ignited her horn, and magicked open the pumpkin door and ran in screaming "TWI-LIIIGGGHHTTTTTT mmSPARRRRKLE!"

Sorry bro.. couldn't resist. Story is great so far. can't wait for the next chapter.:twilightsheepish:

I got all the doors on Skellington's side except the red shield. I couldn't think of what Hub show that is unles it's GI Joe, but I don't recognize that symbol.

Also, why Starship Troopers? And what are the manic rabbit, etc? I don't follow the theme on Rarity's side.

#32 · Nov 10th, 2011 · · · Doors ·

Never mind about Rarity's doors, I just got that the gem is the Touchstone logo and Splash, Roger Rabbit, and Starship Troopers were all touchstone productions.

But why is MLP a node in that particular ring...?

There's (at least) two sets of doors - one in Equestria, one in Halloween Town.
Well, the MLP door in Halloween Town is part of a circle of Hub shows - Pound Puppies, G.I. Joe, MLP and such.
And yes, the doors in Everfree are Touchstone-based, hence the Nightmare Before Christmas door. There may well
be other clearings linking up with other production companies, channels, holidays, or whatnot.

OK, this fic is just brilliant - and I not even that much of a fan of Nightmare Before Christmas! :pinkiehappy:
You gain bonus brownie points and a straight 5 stars (raised from a 4) for the song number!:rainbowkiss:

Ha ha ha, oh God! I don't know what's better, Fluttershy-the-tree, the berserker potion, or Rarity and Dash going off the deep end!

The song was FANTASTIC, I sang along!

This is awesome. Continue please!!!:yay:

I'm not gonna lie. that was epic. and i couldn't help but sing along to the song. out loud... XP

If that's so I would stay for as long as I can finding the Hinterland Hub (That's what I call them) that leads to Lego Worlds, to be honest:twilightsheepish:

Love the story, by the way. NMBC is my favorite movie, can't wait to see what happens next

Well this is... interesting.:derpyderp2:

sweet ive been waiting for this update. i especially like how you came up with a musical number

I couldn't help to the massive smile that creeped up my face when I read the musical number.
While playing the song, gave me a good laugh:twilightsmile:

I love this story, great humor and an amazing story

33436 also i loved how it was a parody on 'Kidnap the Sandy Claws' one of my favorite songs from the movie :yay:

This fic just made my all-time top three. I honestly can't say what I love about it the most: Evil Rarity, Adventurer Twilight, the song or the angry mob running Zecora and Luna out of Ponyville.

Can't wait to see how it ends.

Okay. Rarity's gone stark raving loony.:pinkiecrazy: Dash, I'm not sure about but it's probably a bad thing that HER COSTUME IS A FREAKING SHADOWBOLT. Twilight, due to having dressed as a specific person instead of just a generic monster, is having her personality overridden. Everyone in Halloweentown is having a sudden bout of terminal stupidity, not even pausing to wonder where the heck Jack is, and the Hanging Tree is flirting with Fluttershy, which beyond all reason actually manages to sound even MORE idiotic written down.:facehoof: Oh, and also, AJ's a scarecrow and Pinkie's a chicken.:trixieshiftright:

And Luna and Zecora lie terribly, despite the fact that it's almost certain the ponies would have understood if they'd told them Rarity was in trouble. Really, this story is almost painful to read.:fluttershyouch:

Does this mean I'm disappointed? Maybe a little. Am I going to stop reading? NO. This is MLP and Nightmare before Christmas, and a combination like that is either really good or really, really bad. Keep up the good work, just try to explain things a little more.

Brilliant work here, just like your other works. The highlight was definitely the remake of the "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" song. It was really fun to sing along with it in my head.

It seems costumes overcome pony senses in this world. The horror!

Looking forward to more!

The song was just EPIC! :rainbowkiss:

Awesome twist to have them become their costumes, didn't see that comming. And Starswirl was apparently an RPG fan! :rainbowlaugh:

Can't wait to see how this ends!:pinkiehappy:

Indeed...I sort of figured that Halloween Town's costume-focused holiday "aura" would interact in odd ways with Ponies, who wear a symbol on their butts that defines their identity. So, essentially, clothes make the Pony. :raritywink:
Sorry you're having a tough time of it! :fluttershysad: And thanks for sticking with it regardless!
I should point out, though, that even in the film the Halloween Town residents are stunningly easy
to sway - they overturn their whole way of life and agree to take over Christmas with little more than
a brief overview by Jack. Now, I'll grant that he is one charismatic motherbucker, but STILL.
Similarly, both Zecora and Luna have reason to be leery about depending on the good natures
of the folks in Ponyville - ESPECIALLY if they tried to explain that the Elements of Harmony
were in another world and Nightmare Night had to continue indefinitely. *cue angry mob anyway*
Do stay turned for the finale, though - I don't want to spoil, but there is more going on than there
appears to be...
And everypony else: thanks for your kind words!
As I have often said, this fandom rocks so very, very much!

Please tell me we won't need to wait this long for each new chapter; I had honestly thought you had given up on this one because Halloween was over and you had gone over two weeks without updating.
