When Sunset Shimmer turned into a demon and was purified by the Elements of Harmony, the evil in her was not destroyed. Like Midnight Sparkle, it became an entity of its own and torments her in her nightmares, waiting for an opportunity to control her again.

Because, if the villain of Shadow Play is the Pony of Shadows, that means she's Nightmare Moon separate from Luna, and if Nightmare Moon and Midnight Sparkle became separate entities from the characters they were once one and the same with, why not her? Sunset had the darkest side BEFORE her transformation, so she had the most evil to exorcise. There was no sign of her after Sunset was purified so unless further evidence comes up I'll say she ended up like Midnight Sparkle.

A short one-shot with snippets of story and elements of a darker AU based around if Demon Shimmer hadn't been defeated and dumb magic rules I made up just for this exact AU were in play.

Written during the Iron Author Writing 2023 Competition. The one I submitted for the competition lacked all my funny italics because I had to paste it in from libreOffice haha. (I have since realized I should have pasted in the chapter here first and then into the competition, but c'est la vie).

It's a familiar nightmare, one Sunset Shimmer has experienced frequently since her defeat at the Fall Formal: her friends fail to stop her, Princess Twilight falls, and she invades Equestria with her zombie army. This time, however, the portal is destroyed before she can use it and she finds herself trapped in Canterlot High, along for the ride and out of control as her demonic self goes about its own egotistical way.

And this is, after all, a dystopia. The night is young, and the city is full of scoundrels to be attracted by the promise of power, discord and cheap thrills. Able to do nothing except talk with her goofy, sardonic host, Sunset will have to find a way to stay sane until she wakes up... assuming this isn't already reality.
