Raven has been trying to snag the latest romance novel in the lurid Ginger Gypsy series -- torrid, trashy and utterly irresistible -- for weeks. And now, thanks to a coworker's generosity, she has her grubby little hooves on a copy. Tonight is going to be great.

Raven lives alone in an upscale apartment in a nice neighborhood in Canterlot. She only rarely has friends over. Which is why the note in the book is so puzzling.

She remembers the swift wind and the rolling grasses and the thundering hooves on the plain, her ancestry, her birthright, her heritage... all gone.

The demons descended and enslaved her race, warped them and thwarted what she could become. She wanders now with ancient memories, the aftertaste of metal in her mouth and a skin-crawling itch where the saddle once rested on her back.

...Is that another herd in the distance?

All year, a malevolent creature watches and judges ponies, and as winter falls it rises from its torpor. On the longest night of the year, it swoops down and renders its verdict on all the fillies and colts of Equestria and there is nothing that they can do to stop it.

None of the adults see a problem with this, but Cozy Glow does, and she's determined to stop it, or at least avoid it.
