It's been almost a decade since the Battle of the Bands and Sunset Shimmer has been trying to clean up the mess she made. After series of unrelated crimes, Sunset, now known as The Phoenix, may need to finally ask for help.

On the day of the Friendship Games, the veil between two worlds is pierced. The magic of Equestria seeps through the barrier to permeate the world of humanity. Entities begin to come into existence. Lore and legend are gaining flesh, bone, and blood, yielding things both wondrous and horrible. Magic is powerful, but a limited resource. If the world at large discovers its existence, Equestria will become a target.

Thus, seven friends agree to keep the secret, but some things will not be hidden away.

The Great and Powerful Trixie was just a travelling showmare. Impress yokels with pretty lights, swindle them out of money, lather, rinse, repeat. Theatrical, cynical, bored as hell.

Sunset Shimmer was just a mercenary, a hired horn with a practically unflappable attitude and a barrage of offensive spells. Practical, cynical and bored as hell.

Twilight Sparkle was just a librarian on a train who happened to read about a legend in a book. Of a mysterious tree that would supposedly grant whoever found it their hearts' desire. Optimistic, reclusive and bored as hell.

One train crash. One bandit chief. One ill-timed show.

Is that all it takes for destiny to get on the rails?

A shield has appeared over Canterlot and the sun hasn't risen. Twilight Sparkle, Trixie Lulamoon, and Sunset Shimmer, must find and destroy the cause of the shield, or the sun may never rise again. But when facing an unknown enemy, which assumptions are correct and which may prove fatal?

An army of dogs enter Equestria from the alternate world and become a massive invasion of dragons.

The grey earth-pony Octavia Philharmonica has everything she'd ever desired: A small house in Trottingham and appointments at the Concert Hall. But there is something missing. Despite all of her dreams, she is incredible lonely. She even places a small ad in the local paper to find a roommate that fits taste. Once Vinyl, a white-coated unicorn, appears in front of her door, Octavia's world completely changes, bringing back the past that she and Vinyl forgot.

Vinyl Scratch wakes up one day to find all of Equestria and it's inhabitants have been frozen in time and her magic sealed. Just as she begins to think that she's the only one left unfrozen, she finds a mysteriously unaffected earth pony named Octavia battling a giant creature with magic. Together, they decide it's up to them to figure out what's happened to Equestria and find a way to fix it while defending themselves from the monstrous shadows that chase them at every turn.

After the treacherous happenings of In the Background, Octavia and Vinyl managed to escape with only scars and nightmares of their time in the Everfree. Octavia, on the other hand, is now being haunted by nightmares that are slowly revealing that the mysterious alicorn of nursery rhymes exists and has freed himself from his imprisonment. Are they all chess pieces in a large plot to kill the princesses in a power struggle that caused the sisters to split in the first place?
