When Queen Chrysalis discovers a way to separate Nightmare Moon's soul from Princess Luna, the evil pair team up with Discord to take on Equestria, plunging the peaceful world into darkness. Both Luna and Celestia start armies, one to guard the night and one to take on the day. But the two princess have very different ways of leading armies, and the Elements of Harmony must choose where their loyalty lies. Will they pick the Solar Empire or the Lunar Republic? A year after being sealed away by Twilight and her friends, Discord breaks free with some strange magical energy that he can't quite figure out. But that doesn't matter, for all he cares about revenge. This time, he has a proper plan, determining that the only way to beat the Mane 6, is with themselves. After Concocting the Elements of Disharmony, he seeks a way of tracking down the necessary energy to create these dark clones, and discovers an unusual ally, from the Astral Plane. The Elements of Disharmony have been discovered. As they choose their new masters, it is a race against time to find the wielders before they discover their Elements, or the safe streets of Canterlot will erupt into a full-blown war between the masters of Harmony and Disharmony. However, it will not be that simple. Somepony is working behind the scenes; somepony is pulling at the strings of the Elements of Harmony and Disharmony alike. Who is this certain somepony? Twilight Sparkle is summoned to Canterlot to find out, where Princess Luna and a group of scholars are studying the Elements that they have found.

A storm is coming to Equestria...a storm that, when it hits, could destroy everything in its path.

Sequel to The Shadowed Nightmare. If you have not read that, what happened in that story should become apparent as you read this one--though if you want to go read it, by all means go ahead. My personal/"ponysona" OC will not be a character in this story, although this story includes the original villains The Shadow and Puzzle Master from The Shadowed Nightmare.

UPDATE May 13, 2013: Next chapter will be released May 27, and from then on new chapters will be added much more often.
UPDATE November 29, 2013: The final chapter will be released at the end of next week at the absolute latest. Also, since I am going to submit this story to EqD, I will be revising some of the earlier chapters to fix some basic writing mistakes and flesh out the scenes with better descriptive imagery.

UPDATE February 18, 2024: Haha, okay, so it turns out that I may have slightly overpromised when I wrote the previous update a decade ago. Best I can do for now is quote Douglas Adams: “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by!” I plan to finish on chapter 20. Hopefully this time I can make the wait a little shorter.

Spike saved the Elements of Harmony, but a past mistake had caught up to him. He died a week later, leaving Twilight heartbroken, holding a crystal that contained half his soul from before he succumbed to dark magic.

Now, some months later, Twilight has spent her time searching for the key to bringing Spike back. With everything in place, and Cadence assisting her with Spike's resurrection, will everything go as planned, or will something falter and leave Spike half of or twice what he used to be?

Twilight Sparkle stood on her hind legs, her forelegs to her side swaying back and forth as her scythe dropped to the ground. Tears welling up in her eyes, she looked down at the corpse that laid before her, still young, but ready to die. It wasn't her fault she was chosen for this, all because she became fascinated with new powers.

"I can't believe this."

Twilight stared over the horizon, gazing on the city of Ponyville in the distance. It's inhabitants, who once saw her as one of their best friends, now barely knew her. She could walk the streets to Sugar Cube Corner, or help her friend Applejack on the family's farm. She could even sit in her Library with Spike and read her favorite books.

But none of it would be the same.
