Shaken from watching her friends succumb to Discord's tricks and Chrysalis' deception not long ago, Twilight Sparkle decides that the Elements of Harmony should be more than ready for the next threat, whatever that threat may be. When her eagerness to be prepared yields a grave mistake with consequences reaching farther than the Elements can imagine, all Tartarus breaks loose. It will take finding the truth of the Elements to have any hope in fixing their transgressions, and their friendships. From the littlest filly to the Heavenly Goddesses themselves, everypony's way of life hinges on a group of mares who may not have it all together.

Lyra is a young mare returning to the capital for business instead of pleasure after a falling out with her closest friend. Pressured by all those who love and care for her, she's on a journey of self discovery and ascension. Assigned the task of becoming truly independent and learning how to make her way in the world, the only thing standing in her way is herself. That, and the world falling apart around her.

Princess Celestia, tired of the constant pressure that ruling a nation puts on her, decides to take a day off and let Luna take her responsibilities for a day, something the younger alicorn is more than happy to do. She disguises herself as a pink maned pegasus pony named Sunny Skies and decides to go walking around Canterlot without any supervision. Unfortunately for her, not all parts of Canterlot are as safe as the palace, and she finds herself at the wrong end of a gang of muggers, who decide to kidnap her for a ransom when they see how much money she has on her.

Luna freaks out.

Filled with anger and sorrow, Spike and Rarity fall away from one another. In his grief, Spike pursues new interests, and their friendship is in danger of never recovering.

While studying the founding of Equestria in the Royal Library, Twilight comes across a very odd, and very old, book. Some of the historical accounts found therein are very familiar, part of any filly's childhood education, but there are more details. Troubling details. Since Celestia has taken leave for unknown reasons, Luna is the only pony around who gives Twilight any hope of finding out the truth. A truth that, as it turns out, Celestia never wanted her to know.
