Princess Celestia is growing increasingly concerned for her sister. Princess Luna's reclusive habits have been getting worse, and she refuses to let herself be helped. Not knowing which way to turn, Celestia enlists the one pony whom she feels can once again reach her sister through the power of friendship: Twilight Sparkle.

Unbeknownst to everyone, something sinister hangs within reach, seeking to cast a thick shadow over all of Equestria. Both Twilight and Luna must come to terms with their feelings of self-doubt and regret before it's too late, and maybe, if they can come to terms with some other feelings, they'll be able to find something even more than friendship along the way.

Princess Twilight Sparkle has been losing her mind. She lives plagued by nightmares and hallucinations.

Discovering she's not alone, Twilight realizes Equestria may be in great danger. She seeks counsel with Princess Luna to discover the truth about her nightmares. However, Luna warns Twilight the knowledge she seeks will come at great personal cost.

Twilight Sparkle would give up anything to save Equestria, but how much will she sacrifice just to learn the truth?

Two decades after the banishment of Nightmare Moon, her shadow still lingers. Princess Celestia has been left to tend the Twin Thrones alone and protect us all from those who would see Equestria crumble. Our enemies take many forms: some would tear the world down with their claws, others with their smiles. They are monsters all the same.

Things aren't going well between Celestia and Luna. As tensions grow between them, it is quite clear that they simply aren't the same ponies they once were. Instead of risking the loss of each other's companionship, both agree that perhaps some distance would help them recover a little. Besides, Celestia could use the vacation anyways.

But the beach town of Dusk Falls is hardly the peaceful and quiet abode Celestia had been expecting. Amongst the boardwalks and carousels a sinister plot is unfolding, as trouble rises both in the heart of Equestria and in Celestia's new home.

Several years after returning to Equestria, Luna spends most nights isolated in her room with only her tomes and music for company. Her sister began to notice a growing sadness from her loneliness, and together with Princess Cadence they decide to try and search for a consort to cheer up the Mare of the Moon.

The commotion of this decision catches the attention of Discord, who can't help but be thrilled with the idea of "helping" his favourite two alicorns get together.

On a day of remembrance, a new threat arises, shedding light on old mysteries.

This follows Two Pair by about 700 years, but is not a very similar story, and reading Two Pair is not necessary to understand Sparkle Day.

Celestia has a dangerous creature held in the deepest of Canterlot's high-security dungeons. It can create ponies (with full backgrounds and histories) with it's strange and often-times prophetic powers. The Princess does her best to keep it under wraps, but its only a matter of time before it's "creativity" will get out of control.

It all would have been much simpler, but it had to be the one Twilight could only call The Mare on the Moon.
