On my way back from Zecora's hut, I found him, hurt, alone, and scared. I didn’t know how a pegasus colt had gotten lost out here in the depths of the Everfree Forest, but he needed help. So I showed him the same kindness I’d give to any other sick or injured critter. It had an unusual impact on him, and I have no idea what the lasting effects will be.

Being a detective on the Canterlot Police Force was exactly where I was meant to be. When that was taken away from me, I started down a path that was not likely to end well. Then I found a unicorn filly lost on a rainy night. I was less than enthusiastic, but I couldn’t just leave her. The search for who she belonged to sent us down a path more dangerous than I would have thought possible. The destination would change the course of both of our lives.

My job as a private investigator wasn’t particularly glamorous. In fact, some would go so far as to call it monotonous. Still, being able to help ponies in ways the cops couldn’t, or wouldn’t, was fulfilling. Then a former client and friend was arrested for murder. If the police aren’t going to do a serious investigation, then I have to. And I need to solve it before anypony else dies.

This story is a sequel to La Femme Fatale

My business is Discrete Discovery Private Investigators. Investigators. Plural. With me as the owner and sole employee. I laughed at the irony. Yes, I enjoy the work, but it’s been slow. Most of the cases I see are pretty mundane. Some are actually interesting. Every so often I’m asked to do the impossible. That’s just happened, and I’m forced to consider if being slow isn’t such a bad thing after all.
