I don't know what that is, but this story and any additions to the anthology are inspired by Robert E. Howard's work surrounding his character Conan the Barbarian.

I'm a huge fan of Conan the Barbarian, my father introduced me to the Commercial as a kid.

I greatly enjoyed this first chapter and I hope you continue it! This is what I want to read!

Heh, sorry. It was a Ghostbusters joke. :twilightsheepish:

So. I'm impressed.

You managed to emulate Howard's prose without getting overwrought, and even more impressively managed to give a story that feels like a Conan story without doing Sunset a disservice by just writing her as Conan with tits.

That you adapted one if my favorite stories, Tower of the Elephant, for your plot was icing on the cake.

I do hope the narrator is wrong about the Shimmerian never making it back to Equestria, though.

Thank you. I didn't plan for it to parallel Tower of the Elephant so much, but mortals interacting with divine beings is pretty much most of mythology. For original material I drew on my interest in gnosticism and early Christianity in the hopes of still being refreshingly different.

Oh, this is exquisite. Eagerly looking forward to seeing what other adventures Sunset has in this savage realm. And if, in time, she becomes a queen by her own hand. But that is a story for another day...

Ah yes, the Tiphrates River, sister to the Eugris. :raritywink:

Plutonium is not a toy. Good on Sunset to recognize that. Depending on the half-life, the Tower may still be there when people are ready for its power... if we ever truly can be.

This is… pretty unique. As far as I’m into both topics, I haven’t seen mash-ups of the FiM and classical sword-and-sorcery. (Begone, corny D&D crossovers!) Sincerely hope you won’t give up on this story. :rainbowkiss:

Each chapter is intended to be a self-contained short story with some reoccurring characters. The benefit of that is there's very little burnout, since I can write almost anything I want.

There is more in this world than Sunset realizes, or wants to consider too deeply. Better for her sanity that she focus on what she can affect herself. (Though given her history, choosing not to dive headfirst into the afterlife to confront the lord of the dead is a sign of relative humility.)

Still, that she was looking for a magical door suggests a degree of homesickness. She is still young, but she may already tire of this savage land. Of course, I doubt it is an easy feat to come back the way she came, if that way is even still open. I don't know what she's looking for, beyond survival. I doubt she does either. We'll see where she goes from here.

So I've never read anything remotely like this, and I'm just realising that it is incredibly my shit.
I was absolutely enthralled at the dialogue, the metaphors, the aphorisms, the setting and the fight scenes, the characters... I gotta get more of this in my life lol, it's incredible. Do you have any recommendations? Also can't wait for the next chapter!

A book series that is a lot more character and plot driven would be the Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett, the first book being the Warded Man (The Painted Man in the U.K.). These books are refreshing additions to modern fantasy, but they're not really part of the sword and sorcery genre of Robert Howard. In terms of stories on this site which delve into the sword and sorcery genre, I don't think I know of any writers who have done as honest of a replication of the themes and style as I have. That's not to say there aren't any, or that other writers can't do it, but it's a niche genre and few writers have the time and skill to veer off into it.

I've linked below a pdf of an annotated collection of Howard's Conan the Barbarian stories which have inspired these short stories. This is the copy I personally use to draw some inspiration from.

Thanks for the quick response, I'm gonna check both of those out. Cheers.

Yeah the site I used to host the images isn't working anymore. I'm going to have to fix that.

This story is really cool and well written. I've never read an actual Conan story but this feels right.

The First chapter: I like how is gives us a glimpse of the heights of what we could find in this place. It doesn't clearly say if sunset gained anything from the adventure and I feel like that's a good angle to take. This allows Sunset to continue to get by on her own skills and a bit of luck.

Second Chapter: A familiar story of foreboding with heavy mystery. Very cool.

Third Chapter: Some of the best worldbuilding we've gotten and quite an impressive story that feels complete and manages to stand on it's own. It's so long it feels like it could have it's own story block but it feels like it still belongs.

This is a fun series. I really hope you come back to this someday.
Deserves more upvotes.

Thanks a lot! I'm actually working on some stuff related to this, it just has been hard to find time to write between my job and my other stories.
