This was really sad for them there.
It kind of hurts more that Luna didn't get to perform the duty her mother gave her of raising the moon for much long compared to Celestia raising the sun due to losing a 1000 years by the NMM mess and the fact she has to give that duty up(for some dumb reason) upon retiring.

Poor Luna..

Thank you for the comment. Luna's mother had to go in a desperate attempt to save her husband, but feared she wouldn't be coming back. She needed to know that Luna could do the job by herself at least once before she left ...

I agree; it's a tough break for the two sisters, but at least it develops a plausible scenario that could fit in with canon.
