Chapter One: Five Years

Spike awoke with his heart racing and a cool chill running down his scales. He brought a hand to his forehead and tried to wipe away some of the sweat he had accumulated in his sleep. As he sat up, Spike breathed deeply, attempting to calm himself from his nightmare.

He looked over to see the first beams of sunlight beginning to reach over the windowsill. Spike felt a little revealed by this, for this had not been the first nightmare of the night.

Spike slid out from under his sheets, and was almost ready to call to Twilight to wake up, but the sight of her empty, and already made bed, halted him. Assuming the mare had decided to get a jump on the day, Spike began down the staircase and into the main room. As he did this, the smell of freshly cooked pancakes confirmed his theory.

He stepped into the kitchen to find Twilight with a plate of pancakes before her. She seemed to be too intrigued by her newspaper to even notice Spike’s entrance.

“Good Morning, Twilight,” he said groggily.

Twilight appeared to jump before she looked up to Spike. She forced a smile to hide her embarrassment, but as she took note of Spike's bloodshot eyes, her expression quickly shifted to one of concern.

“You didn’t get much sleep I take it?”

He shook his head.

“Well, there’s pancakes if you want some,” she said as she gestured towards the plate across from her.

Spike shot her a playful look as he took a seat. “You didn’t burn the underside like last time, right?”

The princess rolled her eyes. “That only happened once.” She paused before redirecting the conversation. “Now, do you mind telling me what kept you up?”

Spike sighed. “Just some nightmares.”

“Same as last time?”

He nodded.

Twilight leaned back in her seat. “Are you sure you don’t want to talk? It might help to get some of this stuff off your chest.”

“No, I’m good,” he said, raising a claw to assure her.

“I’m just saying you should-“

“Twilight, it’s okay. Can we please just talk about something else?” said Spike, more forcefully than he meant.

She averted her eyes, fearing her present course may only serve to annoy him.

“Okay.”

He noticed this shift, and began to regret his actions.

“I’m sorry. Now just isn’t a good time…”

This caused both to feel slightly awkward, but Twilight quickly thought of something to say.

“Hey, when I was making these pancakes I noticed we were running low on a few things. Do you think you could come to the market with me?”

He nodded. “Sure, I don't mind.”

Twilight smiled to him before returning to her paper.

“So what's got you so interested today?” asked Spike, as he raised his brow.

She sighed. "Before you read this, just know I'm going to take care of it."

Spike leaned forward, now much more concerned. "Twilight, is everything okay?"

She looked down at the newspaper, hesitating before unfolding it and sliding it over to Spike.

As soon as he read the front page, he leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms.

“MORE DRAGON ON PONY MURDERS SPARK OUTRAGE”

Spike moved down and began to read the rest of the article. It was clearly bias; almost trying to stir up controversy with the way it was worded. Sure it was good for the news industries, but bad for the thousands of innocent dragons living in Equestria.

“So, it’s starting again?”

Twilight nodded. “Listen, the princesses and I will think of something, and in a few months it'll all blow over.”

Spike looked up at her with an expression obviously not as hopeful as Twilight’s. “It still hasn’t blown over, Twi; it just hasn’t been as bad.” Spike then stood. “I mean, whose brilliant idea was it to put a town there anyways?!”

“The farmers need the land Spike. Regardless, as long as the princesses and I can calm things down, we can still fix this. I promise.”

“You’re not a dragon; you just don’t get it!”

Now it was Twilight’s turn to get frustrated. “That may be true, but I saw how you were last time, and I care about you more than anypony in the world! So don’t tell me I don’t get it!”

Spike was about to continue his rebuttal, but once Twilight's words registered with him, he just stared at her, really not sure how to reply.

“... Really?”

Twilight’s cheeks turned a light shade of crimson at the realization of what she had said. However, since it was true, she figured that she might as well own up to it.

“Well, of course I do. You're my best friend."

----------

As the pair walked down the streets, Twilight looked to each of the market stands, trying to check off every item on her list. Spike, on the other hand, was far less focused on the task, and more on the eerie feeling that he was being watched. He would continually turn around hoping to catch some pony eyeing him, but each time he did this he found no one paying him any attention. However, based on past experience, he figured the best thing to do was ignore it; for now at least.

Oftentimes Spike would wonder just what happened to Equestria, the same nation he helped protect on numerous occasions. It’s almost as if the recent years of peace have left everyone with nothing to do. Simply put, if the evil outside is at rest, then the evil inside is at work.

“Spike, which one of these look better?” asked Twilight, holding up two tomatoes with her magical grip.

Spike really couldn’t see a difference; so he did somewhat of a mental coin flip.

“The one on the left, I guess.”

Twilight eyed the one he had selected once again. “You’re right. The other one looks too early.”

The princess then made her way over to the pony running the stand.
“That’ll be four bits,” she said with a smile.

Twilight reached into her saddlebag and pulled out the requested amount before thanking her and trotting away. Spike smiled to the seemingly friendly pony, but as he did this, her sunny expression quickly shifted.

Spike truly began to loathe outings. Each time he’d leave the library, he’d have to deal with something like this. Honestly, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d gone in public without someone mumbling about him being a savage, or catching someone watching him with disgust in their eyes. However, in Ponyville at least, ponies like this only made up a minority, so he never felt like he was ever in any real danger. Only in the larger cities did the threats become a reality.

----------

Just as Spike rested Twilight’s grocery bags upon the floor, an emerald flame shot out of his mouth. Before the incoming letter had time to hit the ground, Spike’s claw snatched it from the air. Examining it, he saw the royal seal of Princess Celestia, as usual.

“Come on, why is it that Luna never writes you?” he asked as he handed her the scroll.

Twilight smirked as she unrolled it with her magic. “Do you remember how she could dream walk?”

“Oh.”

Twilight glanced over the parchment, but as she did so, she began to trail off; her expression going from her usual mild happiness, to one of shock with traces of worry.

Spike instantly took note of this abrupt change. “What’s wrong?”

Twilight just stared at the letter, rereading it a whole three times. She had hoped that she might have misread some critical detail, but found she had not.

She looked up to him. “Princess Celestia wants us to come to Canterlot. For the foreseeable future."

His expression now shifted to mirror Twilight’s. “What?”

“She says she’ll give us some time to get our things together, but she wants us in Canterlot by the end of the week.”

Spike made is way over to Twilight’s side, as to read the letter for himself.

“Did she say why?”

She handed Spike the parchment before walking off. “No, but I have a pretty good guess.”

----------

Spike walked along the dirt path outside of Ponyville, a cool mid morning breeze enveloping him with the scent of spring. It was the perfect place and time to do some thinking, and think he did. Spike thought of all the hate he’d receive upon his arrival in Canterlot, all the things he and his friends wouldn’t get to do together, but most of all, he thought of Rarity.

If he was really going to live in Canterlot for as long as he’s lived in Ponyville, it could be years before he saw her again. By then any feelings she might have developed for him would be long lost. This was something Spike was certainly not willing to accept. However, this presented him with yet another problem; if she indeed had any feelings for him, there was only one way to find out. He had to ask Rarity out, on a date. It was something perfectly simple, yet the very notion of it sent fear burrowing deep into his heart.

The dragon pondered just how he’d go about this. Would he go up to her casually and ask so matter-of-factly that it was as if he were asking her the time? No, that’d seem to brash, almost like he didn’t care one way or another. Would he wear his best suit and bring her a bouquet of flowers? No, that’d seem too over the top, and all the effort might even make her feel obligated to go out with him. No matter how much he wanted her to do this, indirectly forcing her to go was not the answer.

Then, a far more troubling thought crossed his mind. What if she does say yes, only to never get to see him? He couldn’t keep her from being happy, by never being there for her. It just wasn’t right.

Spike sighed and came to a stop. He craned his neck back and looked up towards the blue sky. Clouds danced with the wind as they always had, completely indifferent to his inner turmoil. It always seemed that the most beautiful of days, would be Spike’s worst.

“Spike?” asked a familiar voice.

He looked over to see that his thought blinded stroll had brought him to Sweet Apple Acres, and there before him was Applejack sitting peacefully beneath an apple tree.

She smiled to him. “What are ya doing all the way out here?” The mare then took note of his expression. “Something the matter?”

The cowpony’s genuinely caring attitude brought a weak smile to Spike’s lips. Lately, having anyone show the least bit of concern for him, other than Twilight, was always uplifting.

“Just doing a little thinking, AJ. What about you?”

She fixed her hat. “Well, I just finished some apple bucking, and figured I’d take a break before lunch. Now, how about you tell me what it is you’re thinking about.”

If there was one thing other than honesty that Spike knew Applejack for, it was persistence, so he figured he might as well get this over with now.

He sighed before speaking, considering his next words.

“Applejack, I want you to promise not to mention this to anyone.”

She nodded. “Cross my heart. Now, what’s wrong?”

Spike looked to the dirt; the morning’s dew almost completely burnt away. “If somepony you care about a lot is going away, should you tell them how you feel?”

Applejack smirked. “Well, that answer is obvious; of course ya should. If ya really care about this mare, ya should tell her. It’s now or never.”

Spike looked up. “But wouldn’t it hurt to find out, only to have them leave?”

Applejack nodded. “Yeah, it would, but never knowing is even worse.”

“How can you be sure?”

Applejack stood to her hooves and trotted over to Spike. “Just because I was never too involved in the dating business, doesn’t mean I don’t know how ponies think. So just trust me on this one. Even the two of ya don't get to see each other every day, there’s nothing stopping letters, phone calls, and the occasional visit.”

Spike nodded. “That’s if she says yes.”

Applejack smiled. “Let me tell ya right now, she’d be a fool not to. And if she does say no, that’s her loss.”

He smiled back at Applejack. She did always have a habit of knowing just the right thing to say to make him feel better. Then suddenly his expression fell as he remembered the true reason for his departure.

“Even with all that’s been happening to dragon’s lately?”

Applejack looked away, truly not expecting this remark. “All I can say is, if she really does want to be with ya, she wouldn’t care. Besides, if you’re going for some pony who isn’t willing to fight for the two of you, she’s not the right one anyways.”

Well this has caught my eye. I wonder where this will go. I bet Rarity will not want to be with Spike because he is a dragon and because of recent events. Hell she might even give him a hard time about coming to her shop because people wont come to her if they think she has ties to a dragon:duck::ajbemused:. That would be a strong enough cut to make it where Spike wont feel anything for her and give Twi enough room to walk into his broken heart. Helping him fix it as they become closer and closer while they are in hiding. I know he will be struggling with if he should love Twi or not but I hope he doesn't act too hesitantly with his affections. It is always sweet seeing tender moments between the two of them.:moustache::twilightblush: Anyway great work and can't wait to see what else you have for us.

I loved this, a job well done.

i knew it was only a matter of time before you popped up with a Spilight  good job

yay

Looks like trouble is on the horizen, and when people are on the brink their true emotions often come to the forefront.

Favorited off the description alone. :twilightblush:

Could use some work, but so far it's good. :moustache:

Dark..........sad.......and a SpiLight you'll now well find this story....
Gonna hand it to you Ice loved the story gives the chills and warmth of love and pain....Keep going!

I am so looking forward to this :pinkiehappy:

4372150 Oh famous where ever there is Spilight I can find you. :rainbowwild:

4375240 correction: wherever there's Spike, I'm there :raritywink:

JC

There's a decent amount of Spilight to be found out there, but high quality Spilight is another matter. You're definitely one of the better authors of it, though, so I have high hopes for this story.

Celestia can control a massive ball of fusing hydrogen that outputs more energy in a second than any would-be dissidents. I think if anyone tried anything, Celestia would not be afraid to put her hoof down. I'm not saying that this is bad or anything, but suspension of disbelief is important.

4379747 That may be true, but Celestia is a benevolent leader. I doubt she'd resort to controlling her citizens, out of fear of becoming the evil she has fought several times. A personal rule really. She can control everything, except for the will of the ponies.

Hmm, this sounds very good, I'm really looking forward to the next chapter

Fair story thus far, but would like to see what direction it's heading.

Now this looks like fun! Can't wait for more.:moustache::twilightsmile:

You've got a sound story and it makes for a decent read but I personally can't subscribe to any world in which a pony can beat a dragon. When your idea of dragons is pulled from Tolkien and D&D stylized dragons like mine is the concept of even a 100 unicorns posing a threat to a dragon is simply laughable.

Either way thumbs up for spinning a decent tale.

Looking forward to the next chapter :)

overcame my fear of the Dark tags to give this story a chance and I'm liking it so far.

One thing thats bugging me though, is spike starting this story in small bipedal form like from the show and then growing into the larger form from the cover or starting from this larger form? I'm asking because I know that he's prone to growth spurts but also because I'm finding it hard to believe that ponies could find his smaller form threatening.

I'm pretty sure that it's gonna go romantic with Spike and Twilight. Enough foreshadowing has been done that it will go that way; all it needs is a catalyst, and this issue with hating on dragons would be it. And we both know that when push comes to shove, Rarity is gonna take her reputation over taking a chance---even if that chance could get more benefits (and problems) in the long run. And that decision she chooses seems to be amplified because Spike is a VIP, whether its his fame/notoriety of being a dragon in a predominately pony society, or his assosciation with Princess Twilight and indirectly Princesses Celestia and Luna.

It definitely warrants more views as it develops.

Awesome. I love racism/prejudice in Equestria stories and this looks like a great one. Love the subtle touch with the biased media and dirty looks in public. Eager to see things get worse...it doesn't quite look "anti-dragon pogrom" bad yet....

4371432 We shall see. Also, thank you.

4372150 And I have a dozen more ready to go. And thanks!

4373671 Those three types of stories are my speciality. :pinkiecrazy:
I'm glad to hear it. I always try to get my readers to feel.

4373988 I've been looking forward to writing it, just wish I had more time.

4384123 Generally dark, but not too dark, but still pretty dark...

4386300 Well, you must realize that magic, in some cases, can outweigh strength. That being said, most of the dragons living in Equestria are the smaller type. Many are, at the most, as tall as Celestia. The rest have left simply because there isn't enough space to live alongside ponies.

But thank you.

4391083 Thanks. It's shouldn't be too long.

4417110 I get the whole magic thing but like I said I come from the school of D&D dragons where those dragons are perfectly capable of using extremely potent magic because of their advanced age and knowledge. In D&D mythos dragons were among the first sentient races to even toy with magic.

4396516 Oh, don't worry; it's not that bad. It's mostly just really emotional... In some really messed up way.

No, he's still bipedal. The only difference is he'll be taller. The form portrayed in the cover has nothing to do with the story. I only chose it because it set the mood rather well.

4409112 Oh, don't worry, things get bad fast. It's about to go from the 1960s deep south to full on Nazi Germany.

4417073 Keep going Ice this is awesome!

4417136 I don't want to spoil too much, but it'll begin to make since. You see, most of the dragons who are fully grown, in this story, are rather barbaric. They fall more to primal instinct than reason and understanding. Throughout the story, Spike tries to challenge this by showing that the way the ponies are acting paint them as the barbarians, and that he, as well as many other dragons, don't choose to follow this path. That's why they can be taken down; their greed never made them much larger than Celestia.

4417170 Oh your using the shows version of how dragons grow larger. Well surface to say that notion always left a bad taste in my mouth. I like to add a modicum of logic to my fantasy and the idea of greed being the driving force of how something grows or shrinks is just to ridiculous for me to buy into. Still I respect your abilities as a story teller and wish you the best of luck on this fic.

4417225 It does for me, as well as many other people, but I see it as more of something to play around with. Just because something is stated, doesn't mean it can't have statements budding off of it, which can be inferred or interpreted differently. From those interpretations, one can add many more branches until the end result is so far from the original statement, that eventually the person who disliked it to begin with, may find this variant enjoyable.
Also, thank you.

4417314 Eh we old school D&Der's are just a stubborn breed. We like our fantasy the way we've known it for years and new stuff is scary. I mean hell 5th edition is quickly coming up on us and most people are still playing 3.5 edition. Breaking my idea of what dragons in fantasy are supposed to be is just hard because I'm a stubborn old fool.
