It's not. It's kind of difficult to explain, but I write like I was just verbally telling someone the story. I suppose everyone has a different style and that's just a quirk of mine. It's kind of like treating the narrator as a character. It's a way of adding a different angle on the story's humour.
It's probably an acquired taste though, not everyone's going to enjoy it and I hope it didn't interfere with your enjoyment of the story.

Nah, it didn't really interfere as such, it just kinda stood out as a little weird. Like when you accidentally use 'hand' instead of 'hoof', or similar.
