Rarity gives Celestia a very special, very generous gift for their anniversary.

Maybe too generous.

Princess Celestia had planned on taking a leisurely walk to the princess store, but the angry mob of humans had different plans. Plans involving a gatling gun. Plans that were totally ruined by the fact that ponies are immune to bullets.

Princess Celestia isn't angry about being shot 287 times.

As a result of her age, Princess Celestia's eyesight starts to give her trouble and is told to start wearing glasses. However, she is not to thrilled about the idea...

Twilight's dinner party to show Celestia Starlight's progress as a student of friendship was a disaster of epic proportions.

Okay, fine, that's being a little dramatic. The evening didn't go as planned of course, but some good things did come from it, it's not like anybody got hurt, and Twilight did her best (give her a break--she's new to this 'teaching' thing). So why did Celestia--normally poised and calm and understanding Celestia--look so angry? She acted like Twilight was inconveniencing her on purpose! No wonder the friendship princess was so frazzled.

Later that night, Celestia returns to Canterlot. And, after a lot of stubborn denial (and some interference from a certain being of chaos), she finally confides in Princess Luna the real reason she was so frustrated. Luna listens, comforts her, and then proceeds to do her duty as princess of the night by making everyone's evening a little more peaceful.

The night heals all wounds.

Celestia has a dream about Nightmare Moon, while Luna can do nothing but watch her sister's nightmare.

When Celestia awakens, the two sisters talk about what they've just seen.

Celestia helps Twilight remember somepony.

Everypony daydreams.

Some ponies daydream about becoming rich and famous. Other ponies daydream about meeting their one true love. Still others daydream about becoming great heroes.

Celestia's daydreams are nothing like that. Indeed, when her mind wanders, she imagines what her life would be like if she was an ordinary mare. No tiara, no wings, no castle. Just an ordinary mare living an ordinary life in an ordinary town.

What would those daydreams look like?

And, for the first time, she tells what it's like to have to give up everything she's ever had, everything she's ever wanted, everything she's ever dreamed of--all of it, for the good of Equestria.

Please note: this is an "AU-ish" fic--that is, it sticks to canon in most respects, except when it doesn't.

But it is Princess Celestia's private cake. The punishment for even touching her private cakes without authorization is severe, even more so if you actually eat some.....

Celestia likes her evening walks. Luna doesn't.

During one particular night of stargazing, she is going to find out why.
