Being in a position of power is never easy, especially if you are the only ruler. Queen Chrysalis discovers this as the broken remnants her subjects begin to wither away without any love to properly sustain them, grieving over their fellow changelings who did not survive the trip home. Their population continues to plummet, and she is left with only one option.

For Chrysalis, the only thing she can properly call herself is desperate, hungry, and lonely. Fortunately for her, she isn’t fully alone. Fortunately for her, she carries the unwanted offspring from a pony that sent her hurling across Equestria with a blinding light. Though she has nothing left to live for, she reluctantly chooses to raise the child once it’s born. The only question is, does she have enough strength to deliver it?

No one in Equestria knows that happened to the original Crystal Princess after the fall of the Empire. No word in any text book. No historical documents. Nothing except the drawings and tales in a book.

No one except the princess herself, and she’s still alive.

Where is she now? Wandering the countryside, a shell of her former self. A great mare reduced to nothing but a failed leader, trying to remember who she once was. Where it all went wrong. Who she truly is.

Her name was Crystalline.

Her name is Chrysalis.

After the incident a the Royal Wedding in attempting to steal the love of Shining Armour from her sister, Cadence, Queen Chrysalis is left banished to the Crystal Cave. As she stares to her reflection in the walls of gems, she recalls the memories that turned her into a dark being. As she delves into her past of pain, misery, and heartbreak, she discovers that maybe anypony can change... Or can they?

Chrysalis appears in the Crystal empire to reveal that, when she was impersonating Cadence, she and Shining Armor had a child. Unable to feed the young Prince Hornet with love alone, she forces Cadence to adopt the child. Sadly, Prince Hornet is not only destructive, he is a living testament to his father's unintentional infidelity, putting intense strain on both Cadence and Shining Armor. Can Cadence learn to cope with this problem child and the fact that she now knows she has "shared" her husband with the creature she hates the most?

This story is a sequel to Changeling Courtship Rituals

Queen Chrysalis attacked Canterlot, brainwashed Twilight Sparkle's brother, kidnapped her former foalsitter, defeated her mentor in combat, and conquered her kingdom. She kidnapped the sisters of Twilight's friends, turned them against one another, and tried to drain all of Twilight's magic. Queen Chrysalis has, at every opportunity, done her very best to utterly destroy Twilight Sparkle's life.

For some reason, this has not caused the pony to fall in love with her.

However, due to Twilight's misunderstanding of changeling customs, it does mean they are now married. Twilight eventually managed to tell the Queen the truth, but she forgot that whether it's a kingdom or a heart, changelings conquer.

And since the changeling way of conquest didn't work, Chrysalis is determined to try the pony way. The only problem is, of course, she has no idea what that is. But she knows someone who does: Princess Cadance.

Now, with the absolutely sincere help of her mortal enemy, the pony she once locked in the caves beneath Canterlot while trying to steal her husband on their very wedding day, Queen Chrysalis is going to woo the sister-in-law of that very pony.

Surely this is the most perfect plan ever devised.

With Hearts and Hooves and the Crystal Flaire right around the corner, Cadance goes to gain some knowledge on the old traditions and cultures of her kingdom. But upon doing so, she stumbles across a book that mentions a mystery surrounding an ancient race of ponies. Curious, she searches for answers and it may just lead her to the very one who can provide them. The very one whose answers lie very close to heart.

Twice, they denied her a great victory. Twice, she was left humiliated and beaten by pony hooves. But if there's one lesson Queen Chrysalis surely learned, it was revenge. If there was a second, it was where to stick the dagger in a loving mother.

But there are some things even she can't foresee.
