Author's Notes: AKA "The Retcon Story". While reading Ascend isn't required, it is strongly recommended. You all have 1666322 to thank for this abomination against mankind. Like everything I seem to write lately, I dislike this chapter. It seems contrived and the formatting is really awkward. Hopefully chapter two will be better.
And before I get any smart alec remarks, the title is using the second meaning of "hunter", as in "a person searching for something".
One would think that with this fandom the size it is, finding a picture of the CMC with nets or binoculars--you know, a cover image that would actually match the story--would be easy, right? WRONG! After looking through all of Derpibooru's, Know Your Meme's, and 2,500 of DeviantArt's CMC pictures I still couldn't find a good picture and so decided to use a "default" one instead.
Chapter Nine of Ascend is only about a thousand words in, so don't expect it until the end of the week (if that).
So THIS is what you've been, instead of updating Ascend! It better be worth it. I will edit this comment later with my thoughts.
EDIT: Sounds like the shit's going to hit the fan. It's worth it!

1737494 - You could search Stalkerloo for part of an image, then find convincing Applebloom/Sweetie Belle pics to compliment it.
1737759 and 1737763 - Applebloom could possibly convince Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle to believe her, but anypony else wouldn't believe them, as 'who would believe a bunch of schoolyard fillies?'
Also, this side-story could lead up to an event in Ascend based after the party, like Applebloom/Sweetie Belle telling Applejack/Rarity, or Scoots trying to convince Rainbow Dash, who knows Twilight's secret, and would probaly act suspiciously at the mention of the situation, which could tell Scoots the truth. 
Oh, and side-stories are usually made to tell the story in a different perspective, and can boost creativity to feed the main story, so don't hate him for attempting to activate creative sparks for the Ascend plotline.
I'm enjoying Ascend, and this whold help expand the story, so keep going...

This holds a lot of promise for being utterly humorous. This has it off to kind of a slow set-up start, but the hilarity from CMC induced headaches for Twilight seems like it would be a lot of fun! So I'll be looking forward to more from this side tale~

You're right. In spite of them yelling "Cutie Mark Crusaders Creature Catchers!" in an episode, there is not a single picture of them with hunting gear.
I did however find these, and at least they aren't the default pic.
