I had written this, because I was discussing another alternate universe with several other bronies.
The name of the game in this one was the progress of technology and science in ways that canon Equestria, or some of the other alternate universes, did not use.
While I would usually post the counterpart to "Mare in the Moon" first, this was a little note in the proposal that people loved, so I decided to do it first.
sense the over all feel of the series was going to be magitek, and mad science, why not include a few background ponies as homages to classic pulp/turn of the century Sci-fi.
so Lyra Heartstrings has become Heartstrings the Science Pirate, and Gilda has become a tilt of the hat to a rather obscure 1900s German Dime novel series.
You probably figured out who the Conqueror is already.
Von Trotter is a griffonized version of General Lothar Von Trotha, who was in charge of German forces during the Boxer Rebellion in China, and responsible for the wars with the Herero, Namaqua, and Maji Maji people in Germany's African colonies.

It's really testing the waters.
I had this part of the idea more fleshed out than the counter part to "Mare in the moon/Friendship is magic" sense I had some trouble figuring out who the Elements would be.
I didn't want to use all the canon elements and wanted to avoid some of the more popular choices of Trixie, Ditzy/Derpy, Lyra, Bonbon and so on, so this was easier to flesh out sense it used the ones that I did have set, and gave me time to figure out the others.
However, I do intend to write the counterpart to "Mare in the moon/Friendship is magic", once this is finished.
This story has a really heavy alternate universe, so make sure you tell about it with great detail.
I am interested about how this story goes. Keep going on.

Interesting that the sheriff refers to both a "Kingdom" and "Equestria."
I still think Twilight should technically have some link to the Elements of Harmony and Celestia, its an alternate universe but at least part of her backstory should line up. Like she diverged at the point of going to Ponyville; already obsessed with necromancy in secret she forces her guards to take her elsewhere but still inadvertantly helps the new Mane 6 find the elements. Or somewhat younger taking advantage of Celestia's trust in her and her curiousity for necromancy drives her to her now present state. Regardless, she must have been Celestia's student for some time due to Spike will being her loyal companion meaning she still does have a connection with the other 5. Trixie though was honestly exiled while Twilight who was found out at a later time was just exile post her own personal option to leave.

Give the point of departure is nearly 1000 years earlier, I cannot, in good faith, make that happen.
While I will explain things in a later chapter, I will say right now that Twilight was Never Celestia's student, Spike's not Quite loyal, and Twilight has only met one other member of the Canon Mane 6.

On the subject of a famous dark art like necromancy being practiced by two well loved characters, the reader should expect some level of detail to showcase this forbidden art and the challenges it can create for the new heroes in this alternative world to overcome. In this story, A Matter of Rules of War, the detail is sorely lacking in nearly all aspects of the story, creating a weak conflict for characters that have a lot of potential.

*Grins* Very cute fun, the ending felt very nice too. I know you were worried it was anticlimactic but to me it felt just right. After the ursa fight and such, having them get into a huge fight with trixie would've lessened the effect.
