Zontan

Nitpicking your math errors is how I show I care.

T

Twilight has done everything in her power to show how much she loves me. It would have been easier if I felt the same way.

How does one go about breaking up with a dear friend, especially when it's so obvious how head-over-heels in love she is? I'm sure I could have done it, if I'd had enough time to work out how.

But then she saved my life.

If only I’d known her when we were still fillies, and had been able to guide her into a few practice relationships. Something to get her hooves wet, before she dove headfirst after the mare of her dreams.

God, I just love how Rarity views herself as Faust's gift to mares. 😂

I'm enjoying how they're both just a little... more themselves, I guess I'd say? They're both keyed a little more into their idiosyncrasies.

I'm sure it'll be fine.

I patted the back of her head soothingly, but that was all I could manage. I was too afraid to break her heart.

Do it, Rares. Someone's gotta. 💀

I'm nervousexcited for the rest!

I patted the back of her head soothingly, but that was all I could manage. I was too afraid to break her heart.

And that's how Equestria dies. Because Rarity refuses to do the right thing and break Twilight's heart. It was annoying before. But now this is going into unhealthy. Where's Cadance when you need her to knock some romance sense into these two?

“I can say what I please,” Applejack grinned.

Haha yes excellent, good job AJ, you tell her.

Poor Rarity is really going through it. Also Luna is A+ here, I really enjoyed that scene.

Oh for fuck's sake. Someone needs to knock sense into Twilight NOW. Before this gets worse. Forget a deadline. Luna needs to step in and do something. No. Celestia needs to step in and do something.

:fluttershysad: No wonder Twilight didn't want Luna to see Rarity. She would soon figure out what Twilight had done, and Twilight would not win that fight.

Why isn’t there a dark tag?

That was a good story.

Really good stuff mate. A very intense and difficult read, but your character work shines with a creeping, intolerable sense of dread

Twilight is a really good, heartbreakingly misguided villain in the piece, and Rarity's POV is excellently pulled off. Amazing stuff

This story has been sticking in my head for a while. I think it's because the things Twilight is doing to Rarity throughout it all are so manipulative and toxic and, worst of all, real. Excluding the dark necromancy, these are the things that happen in relationships. There are gaslighting, controlling, overbearing, self-serving, and entitled people that feel owed something, who view love and relationships as a simple transaction instead of a complex, cooperative experience. The outcome of it too can be just as sad as Rarity's realization.

Fantastic work, Zontan.

“That was an Ursa Minor ,” Twilight corrected. “Tauros is more like an Ursa Major… if you took out all the maternal instincts and just replaced them with rage.”

So basically worse than an Ursa Major.

The only thing I hate about this story, is this is totally something Rarity would do if Twilight and Rarity was dating but Rarity doesn't share the same feelings. If you don't share the same feelings, reject them after the first date, let them know your thoughts, don't do what Rarity is doing, your only hurting yourselves.

Rejection is better then this.

I nodded encouragingly. There would be little point in dashing Applejack’s hopes, after all.

:facehoof:

I'm starting to think being Generous of more of a curse.

But it would have been uncouth to say that, and surely it would be nice to have a proper dinner after days spent picking at less than stellar hospital food. “Of course,” is what I finally said. “Dinner would be lovely.”

Seriously?

I patted the back of her head soothingly, but that was all I could manage. I was too afraid to break her heart.

UUUUUUGH! Where is Discord? I blame him for keeping this relationship going. He doed enjoy chaos after all and I bet this entire relationship is pure entertainment for Discord

I actively avoided my workroom. I didn’t want to see the flowers, didn’t want to be reminded that every day I spent in bed was another day my work was overdue. Letters from Sassy piled up in my entryway, but I didn’t open them. If I acknowledged their existence, I’d have to explain what was wrong.

I'm starting to believe Twilight might not be the problem and instead it's Rarity that's the problem. Does she even want to be in a relationship?

“Hmm,” Luna rumbled, not sounding very convinced. “Very well. But I will return to check on you in three days. Please at least try to leave the house in that time.” She stood, and her expression softened. “Do not forget that there are still ponies that care about you beyond Twilight.”

Ok now it's both ponies fault. Twilight must know then that Rarity doesn't share the same feelings.

This relationship was doomed to fail since the beginning.

Twilight glared at Applejack. “Oh, you’d like that, wouldn’t you? You think I don’t know what’s going on here? She has a marefriend, Applejack. I thought you were better than this.”

... Rarity needs to breakup with Twilight now.

Instantly, Twilight let go, her anger vanishing. “I’m sorry!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t mean to—I’m just trying to—” Twilight backed away, and for a moment, she just looked… afraid. “Please, I’m just trying to save you,” she pleaded, suddenly sounding desperate. “Just… come home with me.”

What?

Twilight bowed her head. “You’re right,” she whispered. “I just… I didn’t want things to change.” She turned to me. “When you got hurt, it was… bad. Really bad. The doctors did everything they could, but it wasn’t enough.” Finally, she held out the folder to me. “You died, Rarity.”

...

“I… I couldn’t let that happen,” Twilight whispered. “I couldn’t lose you. Not like that, not when it was my fault.” Her voice cracked. “When I was Celestia’s student, she taught me dark magic. Just a little bit, so I understood what it was. But I looked up more. Ways to do things that… most unicorns don’t learn about. A spell to bring back the dead.

... Everything makes sense now.

I closed my eyes, for the last time.

...

Well that explains the death tag. I guess I can't blame Twilight for everything that happened after Rarity left the hospital, she thought Rarity needed to be fixed because she did something wrong with reviving Rarity, she didn't tell Rarity because she thought she might get suspicious, I doubt even Luna knew what Twilight did. When Rarity kept saying she didn't love Twilight, Twilight thought it was because of the spell.

An interesting story.

Now that I look back it should have been obvious, Rarity not dreaming? Rarity not feeling any love for Twilight but also love in general? Throwing the flowers away? Rarity would never have done that, even if she didn't like Twilight she still would have thought the flowers were beautiful enough to keep.

If Rarity was truthful and remained friends with Twilight, she'd still be alive and none of this wouldn't have happened, Twilight might have found someone who loves her back. Both Twilight and Rarity are at fault in the end, Rarity because she was never honest, and Twilight for her manipulation and control.
