Rebellious_Requiem

I'm a simple anime trash man who occasionally writes things.

It's a relatively normal day in Canterlot. The sun is shining; the birds are singing!; and somebody somewhere just spent a good chunk of change on the latest Duel Disk model. Yes, Duel Monsters has become quite the phenomenon, and the Canterlot scene is beginning to develop quite nicely. The local card shop has even decided to hold a beginner's tournament to help introduce new players into the game!

So; what happens when a few, questionably normal magic-infused high schoolers take up an interest in a game that's never really mixed well with magic to begin with? Naturally: nothing good! It's up to them and their new companion: a self-proclaimed Duel Monsters veteran named Onyx -- who has decided to help them learn the basics of the complex game -- to discover the consequences of the cards' newfound hidden powers.

It's a good thing he's a pretty understanding guy. Right?

[Crossover] with Yu-Gi-Oh! based on the EQG universe, but with several fundamental differences -- hence the [Human] and [Alternative Universe] tags to account for canonical discrepancies and the sudden prevalence of children's card games. Additional character or genre tags may be added as necessary. "Duel Monsters" utilizes the updated Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Rule 4 established in July 2017.

No seriously. Just play some goddamn Triple Triad. None of this evil, anime crap happens when you play TT.

Wow! Can I just say this perfectly captures the essence of Yugioh?! It seriously feels like the show, especially with how you format the lifepoints and the number of cards in each player's hand by stating them in bold and separately from the rest of your text; it really makes the information pop out as it does in the show, so nice job there! Also, that gleam over Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon gave Sunset Shimmer has me particularly curious: as someone who has watched almost all of Arc-V (I've watched up to episode 141), I know that these creatures, even though they are holograms, are sentient and capable of having thoughts. That and the comparison Sunset Shimmer made between Rebellion Dragon and the creatures she's seen in Equestria really makes me wonder how she will relate to duel monsters once she gets into the groove of the game (that's assuming she does).

Anyways, please continue this! You definitely now have an excited fan and a thumbs up!

EDIT: for some reason, the story is not letting me upvote it. Oh well, I guess. I'll just try again later!

8061154

But the evil anime crap... it's so... compelling.

8061315

Wow; thank you very much! I wasn't sure how this would be received since I was nervous about the flow of the dialogue and the way I formatted the Duel -- something that turned out to be much more work than I had anticipated -- but I'm glad you like it so far! I'll do my best to live up to your expectations moving forward!

8061577 Sure, but TT is the better game, with much better music. Plus, you can craft items from them. Items that literally make you INVINCIBLE!

The first think i thought about Buster was: Ha a vanilla deck, what a noob! hahaha. Nice start, it really feels like an anime episode and I am a huge fan of yugioh! both the TCG and the anime. Looking forward for the next chapter.

8062068

Thought I'd have our token "first Duel guy" use something nice and simple -- you know; Normal Dragons are a classic staple of the highest tier of big shot show-off after all! -- in contrast to rule-bending instant-activation Traps and Xyz Summoning.

(Also I can't waste one of the cool archetype-based Decks on Buster. I mean, c'mon; what a waste that would be.)

8062068 I was thinking the same thing. For a guy who talks a lot of trash and picks on others, he sure ran a garbage deck. The only skillful thing he did was use Ancient Rules.

"A Yu-Gi-Oh!/MLP crossover story?! Wow, that's probably a super original idea!" - me; struck suddenly with inspiration but a few days ago.

"Oh. Oh, wait. No. No, it's not," - me; browsing FIMFiction only minutes later. "Still doin' it, though."

A good decision. Just because others have done it before doesn't mean you can't. On the other hand, it means you'll have to work harder if you want to stand out.

I agree. Using an archetype with several cards on a character that may not appear in the future feels like a complete waste. Having said that, I'm reminded of this quote: "Heroes are only as good as their villains".

The better Character B plays, the better Character A will look by comparison once he/she wins. But the opposite is also true: if Character B is mediocre, then it will look like Character A just got an easy win.

Using Polymerization to fuse Divine Dragon Ragnarok and Lord of D. into King Dragun, then using its effect to special summon Rabidragon and normal summoning Alexandrite Dragon is a rather simple play, but more impressive than playing Ancient Rules, if you ask me.

Now, keep in mind this is my opinion based on what you showed us on the very first chapter.

Good, you give Buster 'first of the dragons' my favorite fusion monster. In my opinion, it was a little anticlimactic the MST when he set call of the haunted but other than that I like it. Next chapter should be fun, I love explaining of rules, I don't know why? am I weird? whatever
Ho, and a small mistake:

Onyx nodded and drew a card from his Deck. "I'll do just that, thanks. My move!"

I knew I was going to mess one of those up sooner or later. Thanks for the heads-up! And yeah; I thought about having Buster activate it first before having Onyx's MST destroy it, but while I was actually transcribing the Duel I was kind of focused on ending the whole thing in a more concise fashion.

I need more of this. There aren't many Equestria Girls fics where they play games like Yu-gi-oh! or Magic the Gathering.

Hey there! Do you need card ideas? If so ask me!

Hey, I commented on your first chapter some time ago. I didn't realize that in order to check on the stories you've tracked, you had to click on your 'library' tab. I thought you'd be told via notification. Anyway, I'm here now.

Nice past couple of chapters, though the 2nd was easily more entertaining than the third. I'm sorry you're not getting more comments/reviews as I believe to potentially be a brilliant story! I mean, it's a very well-written YGO crossover, despite how many of those there seem to be on this website.

I do have one gripe, however, specifically with this chapter: you made it clear with chapter 2's author's note what this chapter was going to be about, but I think you could have spiced this up if you had separate scenes mixed in showcasing villains or other relevant characters of some sort to help move the plot along. Maybe you kind of do that in the 4th chapter, but it would have been nice to see that here as well. I don't know which characters you would use for those scenes since the only other introduced characters are Buster and the middle schoolers, none of which I assume to be major elements of the story, but, you know... just offering you some ideas, lol.

EDIT: Okay, so before you read what I wrote, I would just like to point out my idiot eyes and mind did not read the word 'INTERLUDE' at the top. Please excuse some of my criticism.

Alright, so I'll just be blunt: this chapter was short, and that is an understatement. I'm assuming you're time-constricted? I mean, I can't blame you since I can be as well, but...I don't know. I assume you wanted to at least give us something, but I think it would have been better if you had kept us waiting so you could dole out a final, finished product. Not that this chapter was bad - it raised questions, to say the least, but it obviously could have been more.

Also, I wanted to comment on the unnecessarily spoilerish nature of some of your author's notes: you don't need to tell us what the next chapter is going to be about, unless you're warning us it may be a boring one (you did this fairly with chapter 2's author's note). It's better to let us find out for ourselves - it's more surprising and gripping that way. Telling me this was going to be a dream chapter rather than letting me find that out for myself kind of takes the reader out of the moment, you know?

Anyways, I'm excited to see where you're going with this! Keep up the good work!

At first, I thought it was going to be an Action duel with Trixie being a performance and all ho and use the field spell zone as an Ex- monster zone on the old version of the duel disk was a neat detail. Rainbow with speedroid I guess that will be the logical thing other than crystal beast. One last thing, so are you going to use link monsters the?, that will be great because I didn't know really that much about them, maybe I will learn Link summoning strategies from you XD. Looking forward to the second part. :pinkiehappy:

Really hoping that Trixie wins and it's not one of those 'player who's literally had only hours of experience beats someone who's been playing for years' type of thing.

That's it; nice banter! Trixie's first rule of Dueling: always be ready to put on a show. A good back-and-forth is essential to an exciting match!"

Yup, Trixie is Yuya as well as a bit of Yugi, apparently (she uses Dark Magicians and that damned field spell I hate playing against so much). Very exciting duel you got going, especially because Dark Magician struck a nerve within Rainbow Dash and Sunset - is this going to be a theme with all of the previous series' iconic monsters? You did so with Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, so I would imagine you are going to do so here.

Also, I love the fact you are incorporating the Extra Monster zones and possibly the Link mechanics as well. Good way to keep things modern, as I am still learning them as I am watching VRAINS. Maybe I can better fully understand them through you? Hahaha.

Anyway, good job with this chapter! It definitely makes up for the problems with the previous few, and I cannot wait to see how the rest of this duel pans out!

I would like trixie to win but not enjoy it because RD is a noob. It's like having a mete expert beat a kid that's trying a deck at a store it's nothing to be proud of cause it's no accomplishment. I especially like that when Trixie found out RD was a noob she dropped the idea of dueling her cause it shows that trixie knows there's nothing to brag about, sure RD is one of the most popular girls and school and trixie would love the idea of beating her, but she just got a deck so no one would care that trixie beat RD cause everyone would know she's a noob.
Oh I would just love it if RD just got incredibly confused why trixie isn't gloating and maybe the other girls considering they know trixie

I Love it Trixie Rightfully won but was a good sport about it though I wish Onyx acted like bender here, and if someone else gets in on it can we please have that person act this clip out unless its out of character for them

I'm glad that experience won out over dumb luck. Too many times heroes win simply because they're heroes.

well, since they now know the game, there is no stopping whatever evil forces from showing up to use said game to rule the world. After all, as we all know duel monsters has never been capable of mixing with magic positivly

you, I personally would have had rainbow use Blackwings instead, but as long as the archetype is based on speed, I guess it works for her.

8382098
Blackwings? I dunno; I don't really see the relation other than the fact that her Equestrian counterpart, y'know, has wings. I personally see her EQG counterpart playing either Speedroid, U.A., or Crystal Beast. I decided on Speedroids because U.A. is something I've seen a few times for her already, plus I'm not big on the archetype itself -- so I wasn't sure about writing for it. Crystal Beasts seemed a little on-the-nose (playing a whole Deck just because its boss monster has "Rainbow" in its name?) or like it could also fit Rarity (I've seen others use them for both characters). I came up with something different for her, but with the new Rainbow Dragon Fusion Monster on the way, I almost wish I had given the Crystal Beasts to somebody.

8313326
I feel like sometimes people forget that the one you're probably supposed to be rooting for doesn't always have to win. Sure; I could have let Rainbow pull off some nonsensical comeback with how easily Speedroids can make huge boards and run through the opponent's stuff, but she's also kind of a hothead -- so it made sense that she'd forget what she can and can't do when exposed to a significant level of goading during her very first real game.

8197596
I actually did think of Yuya a bit when writing her, but he was always a little less... antagonistic, I suppose? in his performance. And honestly: I tried to give her something that wasn't Dark Magician/Magician Girl(s) in an earlier draft of the story. It just didn't feel right. Especially with cards like "Apprentice Illusion Magician" and other similarly named cards in the mix. Nothing else feels like it would have made any sense! And hopefully, when I eventually return to this story (that is my intention, eventually!) I will be able to do more with the new Master Rules and Link Summoning -- if you're not already a master on the subject yourself.

8194991
I considered Action Duels for a while. Maybe just a few sprinkled in here and there, since I already kind of incorporated the more advanced Solid Vision technology employed in the ARC-V show -- however; in my initial planning I realized one fatal flaw: Action Duels are... kind of annoying. I feel as if they sort of undermine the skill required to get yourself out of bad situations with your own strategies and cards because suddenly you can just use the "Action Spell, Miracle!" to avoid your monster's destruction and then just pull off something dumb next turn (blah blah, you still take the damage!)

I'm loving this one and it has potential. Though Link monsters here due to the zones....I loathe the Link mechanic.

8636205
Well, thanks! Glad you've enjoyed what's here so far -- even if I'm having a tough time with anything afterward. Hope I can bring it back soon and live up to that "potential," even if you're not a big fan of the newest rule set. (And I'll be honest: I'm still not so sure how I feel about it, myself.)

Came out great to me. Glad she got her dragon now. Hmm, I have a few ideas for who could use what decks as it stands.
Pinkie: Performapals and Odd-Eyes, or Toons
Rarity: Crystron+Gem-Knight blend
Fluttershy: Blackrose, Ancient Fairy, or Sylvan builds
Twilight: Psychic monsters in general, PSY-Frame, or Prophecy
Sunset: Brotherhood of Firefist, D/D/D, or Legendary Dragons
Applejack: Battlin Boxers or Red Dragon series

I want to see this continue, it is a great story!

If pinkie actually uses odd-eyes performapal it will be really interesting I’ve seen pinkie use madolche’s but what ever you go with I’m sure it will be fun and then there’s sunset who could use any number of cards I once saw a suggestion that sunset should use DDD’s and that could fit her but at the same time could be a little to on the nose for sunset XD

"'Uh-oh' is right, Buster! By using both of my Level Four 'Phantom Knights' monsters, I can construct an Overlay Network!" Onyx stated, striking a confident pose; fist clenched before him. "Two shadowy knights; join together in harmony and bring forth a new power!" he chanted; being as dramatic about his play as physically possible.

Ahh... Zexal rules is it? Personally I prefer GX with polymerisation and all that, or 5Ds with the speed system, but each to their own.

Wait, polymerisation from GX and Overlay Units from Zexal? I'm confused.

8764129
Thing about Sunset and the D/D/D archetype is that I feel like they fit her much better pre-Rainbow Rocks, when she was still basically a "Different Dimension Demon" herself. I had a deck idea for her in mind before I ever started this, but I can totally see why people would think they're a good fit for her.

(Also; we'll see Pinkie's deck soon -- and what it turns out to be may surprise you!)

8764182
Why? Locking myself into a single Summoning method cuts the number of decks and cool monsters I can use from across the entirety of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. ARC-V did the same thing, having Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Pendulum Summoning being key features. I just added the newest mechanic -- Link Monsters -- and rolled with that idea.

Reading this fic and the comments has demonstrated how ignorant just watching the show (Anime? Cartoon?) has left me. :raritydespair:

Epic start for this tournament and I can't wait to see who has the next spirit!

I’m pretty sure Rokket’s have Borreload Dragon as the ace.

8764207
Yeah; I've played the real TCG for a long time and seen it significantly evolve a number of times, but I know that not everyone has -- it wasn't intentional, but you and anyone else who goes into this without a similar level of... well, let's just say "investment" in the game and the whole franchise might end up feeling a little confused or out of their element. I'm sorry if that's the case!

8765709
I'm glad you liked it! I just hope the conclusion i have in mind for this first Duel lives up to it. Though I'm kind of setting the bar a little high considering these Duelists are all supposed to be, you know... new to the game. This might be one of the more "high level" interactions in this part of the arc, to be honest.

8766926
Hmm... that doesn't sound right. I was pretty sure their boss was Insect Queen, but I guess I can check the wiki page again.

8764182

Honestly I am not sure what you are confused at. 5Ds had fusions (even if it was like one duel), Zexal also had fusions, but largely as cameos, Arc-V had literally all the summoning types available.

Also the rules seem to be according to the latest rules. Since there is a Extra deck Monster Zone.

8787202
I only watched GX and Zexal, and only a bit of 5Ds. They only ever had one fusion system - the polymerisation spell in GX, and the Overlay Network system in Zexal - and there was never any mention of the other systems, so it threw me a bit to see multiple systems being used.

8787202
Also, 'largely as cameos'? Zexal had a fusion practically every duel, which pretty much meant every episode.

8787341

???

Overlay isn't fusion summon. It's Xyz summon.

There are for summoning methods to cards from extra deck. Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Pendulum... And the new one, Link Summon.

Fusion usually uses spell to fuse fusion materials (lot's of exceptions), Synchro uses Tuner and other non-tuners from the field (again, there are exceptions), Xyz usually uses 2 or more monsters of a same level... There are exceptions to that as well. Pendulum Summon allows you to summon monsters from hand and/or pendulum monsters from extra deck that are between number of the scales that have been set.

Link summon is pretty complex. But basically works more or less like synchro.

8787484
All I know about the game is from watching some of a couple of the TV shows. In GX, when they summoned a monster by 'fusing' two or more others, they'd use polymerisation, and when they did it in Zexal, they'd use the overlay network. So I assumed the different shows were just using ways of 'fusion summoning' monsters unique to that show, which was why polymerisation didn’t get used in Zexal, or the overlay network in GX. Hence, I was confused when both methods were used, as I thought they were 'universe-specific' to whichever show they were in.

8787484
Just to clarify, I have never actually played the game.

"Sunset and I!" Twilight objected.

I approve. I approve very much.

8787619

Just to clarify, I had watched some Zexal, all of 5D, GX and the original series when I started playing Yugioh. And I already knew that Xyz Summon, because when they call out their summon, they don't say fusion summon, they say "Exceed Summon" (aka how you pronounce Xyz Summon).

Like I do not understand where you got this from.

8787617

Ironically there is contact fusion that already doesn't use polymerization and it existed way before Zexal.

Also, technically Zexal did have polymerization used by one of the main characters. Namely Kaito.

Btw, not a big fan of Link Summoning being here. Not because I hate link summoning mechanics and link monsters because trust me, I really do hate it. No, instead I find it bad here due to fact readers now have to keep in mind the monster positions due to nature of link monsters.
