It's a mix of both. Movies 1 and 2 happened, as did the Anon-a-miss Christmas comic. But something happened. (That 'something' will be revealed later in the story.... Or maybe it wont.) That caused them to die before movies 3 and 4 happened.
They woke up on Remnant, with memories of how to make weapons and how to fight, a year ago and, after making some money thanks to the singing talents of the four, made some weapons and got accepted into beacon.

They were a big hit with most ages, genders and ethnicities. 'My Past is Not Today' was especially popular amongst former members of the White Fang.

I have not 'died' persay, I was hit by a car and had a near death experience, I didn't die, but it was close. What was in the beginning of the chapter was Sunset narrating what she felt as she died in... Magic Pony Land, Highschool Reality TM based on what I experienced.

I wonder who will become close to Sunset in the following chapters... And if we gonna see or hear about HuMane 6. I will be fine if they just become irrelevant to the story a side scaring Sunset for life. Literally it seems... Or that was from the explosion? I know some people have the headcannon that Sunset have scars on her back from her transformation in EQG 1, so... Yeah know, just asking.

Salem and Nightmare named that Grimm. It was... Special... He (yes it had a gender) was created by mixing Nightmare's magic into a spawning pool and seeing what came out as a result. I ask this because of a situation that occurred in LordSiravant's story "The Equestrian Wind Mage: Season 2"(An awesome story by the way). Spoilers but In one of the chapters, Princess Luna fights Ganondorf after transforming into Nightmare Moon and Big Moblin-Beast thing respectively, and proceeds to make him STRUGGLE for his win. Oh, and did I forget to mention they ARE FIGHTING IN THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE?! THAT MEANS NO MASTER SWORD! If you look at this spoiler, and are interested in the story, go check out LordSiravant.
