Mercy? He can show he’s only a monster to his enemies, and that they don’t have to be one...
Starlight’s already off to the mines, they’d probably need an entire squadron to do it again without her.
Just by the cliffhanger I can already tell that he didn't do it. One of his (at least in this story) greatest wishes is to never become the monster he was before. If Fluttershy and even one of his own guards couldn't kill Sunset, what would that make him? To kill the one who would kill for her friend?
Granted, the setup here was utterly fantastic, and it's certainly left open enough to make you think he just might have done the deed. Great chapter all around, if on the short side.
the only one heartless here is the author, with ending like that
Talk about cliffhangers!
Well. Isn't this a turn of advents. But understandably so, it happens alot in Crusader Kings to me. A conflict of morals and image.
She got to you Sombry, whether you like it or not.
I also just want to say that I hope you don't kill them off. There clearly can be more story possibilities these two can bring to the table. No matter what, they can make things interesting.
Honestly, the hatred Starlight Glimmer has been getting these past chapters is kind of annoying because I feel most people aren't actually putting themselves in her shoes combined with the "internet toughguy"/it's just a fantasy world mentality.
Let's actually do the math here.
Even in real life the mass majority of people cannot kill. Those who can without being pushed to the limit or are training (military) are generally not of stable mentality or a product of an incredibly terrible environment. Equestria is even more peaceful than real life and that's not bad. And Starlight is a product of that environment. And in Equestria a majority of the "bad" being are either imprisoned or rehabilitated. Killing is even more abhorrent there.
But not only that if the story is any indication Sombra has been taught to Equestria (which means Starlight as well) to be a be a total monster. And not only that but before they even meet him they come across the bandit encampment where there is nothing but death and destruction. And it's not like any of them even knew those were horrible disgusting bandits of the worst caliber. They can't exactly ask dead bodies that. Once again, stuff the internet tough guy act, that whole visage would've at best deeply unsettled almost anyone. At worst people would easily be losing their lunches and traumatized.
Now Starlight is being given a choice in three days told to abandon everything she's basically been raised in to do the exact opposite under a person all of Equestria has basically been told is a monster of the worst caliber.
So I'm not going to jump on this "hate" train. I understand her position.
well shit i kinda hope sunsets alright
Hell yeah. Fucking kill her. Kinda wish you killed off Twilight as well.
Can't wait to see the reactions from everyone
This is getting very, very good.

*In b4 ck2 castration joke*
Weeeeeeeeeeell, let's see whether or not Sombra can bend.
Nah, I think it's a much bigger possibility that Sombra didn't do it. Same with Moondancer. In the end he will most likely let them both live, if only, because his conscience, which surely grew thanks to Fluttershy's influence, is telling him that death isn't the only option available.
Though Sombra confirmed now that this "you get the others for Twilight" offer really came from Celestia herself. And a scheme isn't very likely in this situation, as he feared. She knows of what Sombra is capable of and simply eliminating other "threats" to him, his family and kingdom isn't an impossible outcome for him to choose. That being said, she readily sacrificed the three for Purple Smart's well-being in exchange.
Wonder if the other princesses agreed with her or if she decided alone. And Twilight will be everything else than pleased to hear what kind of deal was made to protect her skin.
All hail bacon, savior of the week and armoured fist of the benevolent Sombra
Ok, I don't really want to be that guy, but why is there a Discord tag on this story when in 28 chapters Discord hasn't turned up once, and moreover, why hasn't Discord turned up once given that Fluttershy is his best friend?
9190648
He's like a living deus-ex-machina. If not for a VERY good reason, or an Anti-Chaos-Magic-McGuffin like the throne of Chrysalis that nullified his power, he can very well end most threats with a snap of his claws, literally. Guess that's why he wasn't a part of the MLP Movie.
DON’T YOU DO IT! DON’T YOU DO IT!
I’M BEGGING YOU!!!!
9190652
It's true, but he's also a character, with motivations, and good writing requires that he be accounted for.
Why wouldn't Twilight have recruited him to go on a mission to save Fluttershy? Why hasn't he shown up on his own to save Fluttershy? This could have been resolved with a chapter where Discord does show up all red-glowy-eyed and furious, and Fluttershy talked him down and made him promise to leave her there and not interfere, and then when Twilight and Starlight try to recruit him he's all like, "No, I promised Fluttershy." Discord is powerful enough to be a deus ex machina... which is why it's important for believability to address him as an issue and remove him in a way that makes sense for his character. (Or a chapter where Twilight says something about Discord being missing and no one knows where he is, or a chapter where Fluttershy mentions this to Sombra after she's convinced that Sombra has reformed and asks if Sombra has any way of finding him and Sombra can't, or something. It doesn't matter exactly how he is addressed and neutralized by the story, it's just important that it happens, because it's not believable that Fluttershy was forced into marriage with Sombra and Discord was free and present in Equestria at any point since and he's done nothing. They normally met for tea every week. By now Discord would know Fluttershy is gone and where she is, and if she hasn't personally talked him down, why hasn't he attacked Sombra like Starlight et al. did?)

lol
Nooooo
the wait for the next chapter is going to be torture.
Did you just kill Sunset Shimmer on Sunset Shimmer day?
What's this? A cliffhanger that practically screams "CHARACTER GROWTH" about Sombra? I wonder where this will lead...
9190471
And yet you are seeing only the Equestrian side of things. THIS IS NOT THE TAMED LAND OF EQUESTRIA. Look at the area that New Haven is situated in - a hellish cold area filled with slavers, brigands l, and pirates. Criminals all, that only care about their own gain, and will kill, rape, and enslave any they wish to.
There is no rehabilitating such creatures once they have gone "full Raider", if you understand a Fallout-ism. So, in these cases mercy and the "power of Friendship" may as well be, as Sombra said, "shitting rainbows at them" for all the good it would do. Sombra is braving an untamed land and building GOOD civilization where NONE or only bad existed before. Look at human history, since much of it parallels pony history. Plenty of instances where we had to "murder" our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, etc. All in the name of civilization, "God", progress, and so on.
And yes, looking at this story is an exercise in judgment. Starlight Glimmer has not witnessed the worst of these lands for herself, but imagine how her views would change if she saw the slavers make off with some of the miners, villagers, etc ... or worse, her too ... then heard or experienced the very things she'd scoffed at or laid at Sombra's hooves. Methinks she'd come 'round to his line of thought, then.
9190886
Except my entire post was not about the "Equestria side of things". Or even where they are.
It was about understanding Starlight Glimmer's actions and why she is doing and behaving the way she is rather than just yelling how "stupid" she is.
We can imagine (keyword here) that she would change her tune if she saw these things. But she hasn't. She's only been told that's what it's like. By Sombra, of all people. And expecting her to change her tune in an incredibly short time.
9190897
And told of these things by Fluttershy, AND several others that are eyewitness or even VICTIM of these things. I cite her stupidity as being that because her actions, thoughts, and beliefs literally have her holding the mother of all Idiot Balls, compared to her analytical skills rivalling Twiley's own, and her willingness to seek more radical action than Twilight. Here she's acting like Twilight's hoof-puppet, and less like the Starlight we've come to expect.
Her of all ponies should be willing to give Sombra a chance to prove what he is about, yet she is holding fast to her "rose-colored glasses" and her forced "Twilight's right, she HAS to be" ideology in the face of empirical evidence.
This fic shows that, while still a pony capable of killing, due to a harsh upbringing and lack of guiding principles beyond chivalry and protecting what is precious, he is also capable of mercy and change, albeit slowly due to a lifetime of nothing but living amongst the inequine cruelty of that land.
Where the chapter stopped is Sombra at a Moral Event Horizon. He is not beyond redemption yet. But if he killed Moondancer and Sunset he will be. He was already hesitating, and that shows he is not without redeeming quality. Starlight Glimmer should have a moment to "relive" her fronking the timeline multiple times JUST over jealousy and abandonment due to a friend growing up, and be forced to ponder how many lives her frivolous and utterly selfish actions would have cost ... is she really so much different from Sombra, who has justification for his actions of late?
9190920
There is a reason the saying "seeing is believing" exists. Because it be harder to accept something when you're merely told it compared to witnessing with you very eyes thus making it harder to disprove.
People can say "Ridley is in Smash!" a bunch but it doesn't really sink in until you actually see his trailer. Especially considering the history behind Ridley and Smash.
Now bump that up to "New Haven is this really horrible place the complete opposite of Equestria! With Murder, rape, slavery, etc being much more common." You really think that'll sink in for someone whose lived their entire life where that basically doesn't exist without them seeing it for themselves? Add onto the fact that this world doesn't have information sharing nearly on the same level as real life so it's not like they'll know it.
And no she's not going to be willing to give Sombra a chance. Because she and Equestria have been raised to believe he's a monster and on their way to "rescue" Fluttershy they came across the camp (that they didn't know where horrible bandits) which was a massacre they KNOW was done by Sombra. That's not "rose-colored glasses".
And you're still expecting her to flip her complete beliefs in three days for something like becoming a killer for Sombra?
9190863
Coincidence I THINK NOT!!!
Whether the deed has been done or not, this was quite the excellent update. I, myself, can only hope to churn a cliffhanger of that caliber one day...
9190947
This is a wonderful argument IF it dident fall flat on its face with, Sombra offering their lives for her service. Yes it would not be nice or happy times, but the others would go free, she could work on escaping later.
That was the moment for starlaight to say "yes" and serve equestria in secret, but no. She choses to become a martyr and kill her friends with her. If that does not scream idiot i do not know what does.
9191642
It's incredibly easy to call her an idiot and come up with these solutions when you're behind the screen completely disconnected from the situation. Which goes back to what I initially said. You're not putting yourself in her shoes.
9191705
No, i was traying to understand how she thought. Becuse in the end it comes down to: say "yes" and i save 2 lives, he might be lying but 0.05% is better than 0% and ofc I live. If "no" they die, I die.
So "yes" i live ir "no" i die. This is the simplest thought patern that goes into everyones mind when facing death. so the most logical thing for her to say is "yes" becuse she wants to live. and later starts adding, i will also save my friends.
But she goes against this basic thought pattern, confirming her to not care of the threat of punishment Not even Caring for the lives of her friends. and therfor coldly choses to kill her friends becuse of her (twilights)morals. So yes you are right, not a idiot, à zealot. a broken individual that needs some one to tell her right from wrong. Personaly i disslike zealots and think of them lower then idiots.
9191764
Except saying yes means becoming a killer for the person who is one of the closest things to pony Hitler (as far as she knows). Which means she'll end up being responsible for taking lives which is what she absolutely doesn't want to do.
So she says yes and she trains her to be like that bounty hunter. She says no and her friends die. Either way there will be blood on her hooves. This isn't her being cold to her friends or zealotry. This is a lose-lose scenario.
Was going to read this to my sister and saw it got updated again.
... I just sat here cackling like a crazy person for over a minute and flopping around like I should be in a loony bin cause a gosh dang stranger off of the internet posted words.
Thank you stranger off of the internet for posting amazing words.
9191806
You keep ignoring that she made a choise to kill her friends. Sombra gave her à offer to save her friends. She does not want to kill, fucking fine, accept the deal, free her friends and then refuse. Sombra lied? Refuse. She chose the only choise that had 100% negative outcome. All above will kill her but she would rater die than become à killer so why not do some good.
No, she makes a stupid moronic choise to coldly let her friends die. So à idiot or zealot pick one.
I belive the human elements will come here in force and well with the power of Harmony this world will burn
9191844
That's adorable. Grats to you for being an awesome sibling.
I'm currently reading The Hobbit to my niece. She loves the voice I've given to Gollum.
9191806
To you quoting an old saying, I have one for you - "lesser of two Evils", or another "better the Evil you know..." As Sombra's apprentice she'd bave had a better chance to confirm or refute anything and everything she'd been told, learned even more powerful/lost magic to better serve Harmony AND Progress, and still could have furthered some pro-Twilight/Pro-Celestia agenda in secret if she were careful.
So yes, this is a yet another trope to quote, oddly fitting given Starlight, Moondancer, Sunset, and Twilight make a "fantastic" foursome to nearby best Sombra in combat spellplay - Reed Richards is Useless. She has all that drive, conviction, ingenuity, and other grandiose skills. Yet outside of fighting an eldritch evil, a Big Bad or his/her Dragon, or solving some crisis of Inept Rulership - she squanders it!
Where's Starlight's legendary independence? Her "I can do this" mentality? Her charisma that created Our Town and even nearly took in the Mane 6? She's holding the Idiot Ball like Twiley cast a Want-It, Need-It spell on it!
9191845
Did you actually bother thinking through that actual choice or are you just spouting stuff to make her sound like an idiot. How is she going to accept and then suddenly refuse? Did you really think that's suddenly going to turn out well for her? And "coldly" make that choice? Are we reading the same chapter because she didn't make the choice as if she was a robot.
You're basically going back to what I said about being so disconnected and internet bravado.
Easy as hell to call her moronic and cold when you're not standing face to face with Sombra and having to make an absurd choice like that one he's presenting here.
9192287
And you're doing the exact same thing as Ales.
Doing the Sean Hannity "In a Perfect World" type thing. Oh give yourself the perfect observer view with none of the pressure and it's easy to call the people in the scenario idiots when you have none of the pressure and all of insight into what's going on.
Sombra as far as she knew was a monster. They "confirmed" it when they came across the bandit camp. That's including the fact that Sombra's choice was one that forces insane amount of pressure on her.
You can say she's an idiot but force any one of us here in her position without this "clarity" of our observer position and we'd fold just like she did.
9192172
Haha I bet the golem voice is fun to do. She says my Sombra voice is bad, but hey what am I gonna do? I already talk in a lower ‘normal’ voice so getting even lower than usual is weird 💀
(There is also the fact that I’m a girl so if i actually sounded like Sombra then I would have some very serious issues )
9193358
I would envision Sombra having a deep sexy man voice.
Note: I edited out half this comment because I sounded a bit too much like a pretentious fedora-tipping knob... I'm gonna go to my cringe hole now, and reflect upon my sins.
9193391
*attempts sexy man voice-
Sounds like pubescent boy*

*attempts sexy woman's voice-
sounds like Cher*

Alright I’m officially dead. I’ll send the funeral bill via postage. 💀
Here lies Meadow Feather

Death by suffocation
(A.K.A. Laughing to death)
I doubt he did it. He’s obviously changing in ways even he hasn’t expected. And I just know Sombra had to listen to Fluttershy on this. What’s that old saying? A true King answers to no one, with the exception of his Queen. I think, given the way he is toward her, there’s no way he’d disregard her plea’s and can actually go through with killing them at this point.
9190648
I agreed. Discord should have appeared by now unless something happen to him to prevent him from saving Fluttershy. Originally Fluttershy is part of the deal that saves the Crystal Empire from destruction. If Fluttershy is taken away from Sombra before they grew closer then the deal is off and Sombra would do something worst than bring destruction to the Crystal Empire.
9190648
I'm working with the assumption that he doesn't know what happened to Fluttershy and just hasn't been seen in awhile, like in the show, so no one has been able to tell him yet.
I love stories like this that absolutely tear my heartstrings asunder with gritty drama. Definitely one of my top favorite stories now after binge reading through it, so please keep it coming.
On a side note, can anyone recommend stories similar in nature that you enjoy? I'd definitely appreciate it.
Fan theory:
He doesn’t do it, revives them all, sends them off, but say’s they should tell no one, at least for a while. Him wanting to appear tough to his subjects.
She wakes up, doesn’t know what he did at the time, assumes the worst, leaves, and goes too the one place she can, in another dimension she has been to before, home to a certain draconequus who we all have been waiting to have appear, and goes teary eyed, he gets concerned for his closest, dearest friend in the whole damn world, and decides to have a ‘heart to heart talk’ with her baby daddy...
Since people are talking about voices, my boyfriend has the cutest girly voice ever!!!! when he sings...........AWWWW CANT HELP BUT FANGIRL!!!
( This is why I can't pay attention in court.........Zack's voice has cursed me to be all giddy......hehe!)

I mean, it's not exactly what you might be looking for, but if anyone asks for shit to read, I always reply and say: go ahead and read Diaries of a Madman.
It may take you a month or two to read, but it's damn good.
