Well, this was the expected outcome, the only way you could get Starlight to turn to the dark side is if you proved without a doubt she was betrayed and even then her Loyalties are ultimately with Twilight. I can't imagine a scenario where they convince Starlight to betray Twilight.
I really like this story, but the thing with Starlight is really dragging on. Starting to feel it's a Starlight story instead of a story about Sombra and Fluttershy.
foolish child. you will suffer for your lack of vision. but he others... there is still hope. aj would be willing to open a new farm in new haven , rarity may be willing to make them outfits , pinkie and raity would help with the wedding and I don't care about dash. send her to the mines or bind her to the army.
HA! Yes! Good job Sombra, I cant wait for Starlight to suffer for the stupidity of her mindset, she should care more about her friends than nameless and faceless idiots. I cant wait to see that mindset crumble and force her to realize how stupid she actually is! : ))
...bum bum BUUUUUUUMMMM!
I hope he gives the same deal to the others, they are powerful and could be of great use in his crusade
I find it rather hard to believe that Celestia wouldn't try harder for Sunset and that Sombra wouldn't take advantage of it. Now to see how the pirates introduced earlier mess up Sombra's plans for the rogues.
Stop acting innocent, Shitstain!
FINALLY, someone says it!
Ugh starliiiight really?!

I can see moon dancer's skills being used to advance new haven with her knowledge of different sciences and sunset's involvement would be a benefit if she were to join King Sombra's rangers.
I can also see King Sombra becoming more friendly to them as moon dancer's knowledge of science would peak King Sombra interest and he would bond with sunset over the precieved failings of Celestia
This chapter was interesting. It leaves Starlight in character, displaying exactly how much of a shock reality is going to have to be for her to realize her mistakes, and shows where her character is going to have to grow from to become a better pony.
It also leaves open interesting options for Twilight. She'll except Celestia's decision quickly, she's too loyal to her not to, but the internal challenges
that that she'll shuffler will be interesting.
I am really enjoying this story.
The great irony is that the only thing that can save Starlight from the mines is the planned attack of the gryphon pirates, in which she's a priority target right next to Fluttershy. Right now Sombra may have made his decision, but if by the circumstances of that grand scale attack Starlight actually manages to protect Fluttershy (they may be at odds, but Starlight isn't one to let somepony she knows to die as she watches), then he might consider that a debt to be paid, a king's debt, and thus give Starlight one last chance to join them. After witnessing what literally New Heaven is against, the savagery and brutality of the attackers, she might finally understand that sometimes Harmony is achieved through blood.
Anway, great chapter as always! Keeps on edge about what will happen next!

...like I said...Starlight HAD to be the one to wake up first
Keep up the good work my good man
I wonder if Sombra, the cunning stallion he is, proposed or will propose the same offer to the other two. It would be the most intelligent thing to do.
As for Celestia herself, she is so insanely stupid, it hurts.
She sold out Moondancer, one of the sharpest minds of Equestria and even if not as powerful as Starlight, Sunset or Twilight, she still has the brain to learn all about magic and how to use it to its fullest in an appropriate manner. Sombra could have gained something like a 'Royal Scientist' for his court thanks to her.
Then there is Sunset. The brilliant former pupil of Celestia before Twilight came into the picture. She descended to a petty bully, thinking she deserved princesshood for her talent alone. And it's exactly this talent Sombra could make good use of now. Sunset is no Alicorn, but she isn't less of a magical prodigy as Twilight. When she wakes up (or already is?) and sees how the one pony she once looked up to the most simply gave her away like an overused toy I can only imagine what she will do next.
Starlight is already the mainfocus for the last chapters and Sombra and Fluttershy wanted her on their side from the start, because she isn't as 'lost' as the other sheeps under Celestia and Cadance. She doesn't want to admit it and tries her best to excuse her actions, but in the end she still tried to kill Sombra with everything she had, attempted murder is attempted murder. Only the motivation for doing it differs from person to person. When she realized that Fluttershy told her the truth, her "newly learned worldview of friendship" thanks to Twilight might get heavily damaged.
And what about the pirates? They think Starlight is Sombra's concubine, I have a really bad feeling about this.
In the end Celestia showed three of the most promising mares of Equestria's current history how disposable they really are to her as long as she gets her Twilight back. The ascended princess. And who knows how Twilight herself will take these news.
Seriously, so much stupidity should hurt...
9179032
You're assuming Fluttershy and Sombra are telling the truth, it's very possible they are lying about what happened or only telling a half-truth.
9179032
You are implying that Celestia is somehow an intelligent being but canon tells us otherwise.
The M word? Monica.
9178999
Or allow her and the rest of her friends to go home...
It’s getting harder to see Sombra as a sympathetic character.
He touches Sunset and no treaty will protect him from me.
Pirates! We need a distraction here!!!
Forget Starlight, have him make the same offer to Sunset. she would probably jump on it.
9178831
yeah, it is starting to drag a bit.
Fuckin’ called it. I knew she wouldn’t take the deal. Now lets see how this plays out with the pirates coming to call...
Starlight must have had those rose-colored glasses surgically grafted to her freakin' skull, AND the lenses made of transparent adamantite, for fronk's sake! What does Sunbutt put in that Kool-Aid?!
Both Twiley and Glimmy are showing themselves to be textbook examples of the trope Lawful Stupid ... ugh!
To think that Sunbutt would value her at all. Her. A FORMER VILLAIN! One who nearly destroyed reality by fronking with the timeline, no less.
Moondancer and Shimmy are a loss, especially since Sunset is like unto a "first daughter" to Celestia in canon depictions. Moondancer being sacrificed will cause some turmoil for Twiley, especially when she (Twilight OR Moondancer herself) had NO say in it whatsoever.
Good chapter. Bring on the pirates to see if Glimmy Glim finally "gets it" when she truly witnesses the barbarism and vileness Sombra works against and is taming ... doubt it. But we can hope, right? Right...?
Not betting the apple orchard on this 'un, neither
9179037
Sombra? Could easily be, but Fluttershy? It would really be a step away from her supposed to be Element if she shatters her (former) friend's trust into Equestria on purpose just to have Starlight on their side.
9179049
Well, yeah, but in this universe she and at least Cadence seem to be even worse. They banish and push away everything that/who doesn't fit into their perfect little heaven.
If Sombra and Fluttershy are really telling the truth, then that basically tells Starlight, Moondancer and Sunset what Celestia seems to think of them. Like: "For all I care Sombra can have your heads, the only important thing is that Twilight (Princess of Equestria and Element of Magic) returns safely."
They are simply pawns, and THAT is so fucked up I would join Sombra and Flutters just to spite her in their situation.
And even if that isn't Celestia's intention at all, it doesn't matter. What would you think if the one person you trusted the most with every fiber of your being just gives you away as a "political sacrifice"?
oh poor starlight you done goofed she is so blinded by hate she can't see that happiness that sombra has brought others
Starlight may be reformed, but inside she is still completly villianous. Why? One of most important traits of true heroes is self-doubt. Heroes constantly check and ask yourselfes, if that what they do is truly good on both minor and major scale. Villains mostly don't have this trait, what they want and believe must be "good" (source of Knight Templars). Starlight is absolutly self-assured, her point of view is alpha and omega, these not with her are against her. At this point she is "templaring", sacrifacing her friends in name of believes, without their consent, something that even antiheroes and antivillains don't do.
And Twilight is going to has VERY stern lessons from Celestia. Lessons about cost of mistakes. She destroyed live of her three friends, because she invented stupid plot.
Faust sake Starlight. You're so deep in sunnybutt's koolaid that she literally said "I don't give a shit about those others just gimme back Twilight" and you're STILL clinging to her
You know what? Moving on. She's had her chance. She's had...gosh three days worth of chances, some INCREDIBLE feats of loyalty and kindness from Fluttershy, and patience from Sombra.
9178828
Except it's hardly a turn to the dark side. She's being asked to serve the people she tried to harm by butchering their king in cold blood. A fair option given that most rogue agents get a bullet and a shallow grave AT BEST. She's simply too stuck in a 'You're a monster and I'm the real hero!' mindset to stop and consider that Twilight and Co were WRONG.
Truth is... the game was rigged from the start.
Sombra: conquered a nation and led a tyrannical slave nation, and later founded a totalitarian state backed by conquest, albeit a relatively benign one.
death tole: probably around 500k to 1.5mil, if population back then was anything like it was in the medieval era.
Starlight: broke time into several distinct lines, each more horrible than the last.
death tole: 100 mil to... well, at least one of those futures was entirely uninhabitable, so it is impossible to tell.
tl;dr Horse Stalin killed more people than horse Hitler.
9179737
No, she's being asked to become his trained killer and slaughter countless others in his name. Sombra is a monster no matter how you cut it. He's an understandable monster in a place where his tactics might be necessary but being the lesser of two evils still makes him evil.
Yes, she tried to kill Sombra but it was for the sake of her friend and it was done with the understanding she would only have to do it once. Joining Sombra means she would have to continue to kill for no other reason than Sombra ordered it.
9179760
Sombra doesn't get crucified in this story. Shit was funny when it happened to Benny though
Thanks for the update.
Though at least part of this was a bluff? Unless he got something else out of it Twilight should be worth a lot more than those three, and killing the other two seems more like he's wasting his trade. Sombra overpowered them the first time so are they that valuable dead? Plus there's the part of Sombra deliberately hurting his wife, it almost seems out of character. (Seems more likely he would give the other two a chance)
Dammit Starlight, you had one job!
9179798
Thank you.Someone said it at last
Hmmm......
Yep, I still don't like Starlight and I still love Sombra. Could he be more compassionate with the situation? Yes
But if there's a solution that insures them not trying to assassinate him again but also letting them live I can't think of anything besides servitude outside of the castle. In fact, many of them are too powerful to be controlled for a long period of time in any kind of servitude. It kind of sucks but killing them may be the any way to not take a chance.
Dang.
Love the story, it will be interesting to see how the pirates play into it.
9179032
To be fair, it wouldn’t entirely be about saving Twilight above the others. Sure, she is Celestia’s student. Sure, she’s a Princess of Equestria. Sure, Moondancer is brilliant, Sunset is Celestia’s former student and Starlight is a reformed villain turned Twilight’s. But above all that, Twilight is one of the Element’s of Harmony, one of the most important weapons in Equestria. Do you think they can afford to keep that as compromised as it is for too much longer? Afford to possibly lose that? I think not. Aside from the thing’s about the other’s and Twilight’s other pieces of importance to Equestria, Twilight is too important to Equestria as the Element of Magic, and Celestia seems to actually have made the right, logical call on that.
9180188
Who knows, maybe Fluttershy will go behind his back and try some last ditch, ad hoc rescue attempt and smuggle them out or something to save them from death and/or servitude. Even for Starlight who, despite all she has said and feel about Fluttershy now, is still her friend. could be interesting.
9179798
listen buddy. im a huge celestiafag. but my waifu wouldnt be able to make that peninsula work. Its her fault even that the place was a shithole. And this may come to a shocker to your young mind. But some parts of the world, real, or fictional, require an iron fist. The middle east is the greatest example, each and every time some semi-secular but very cruel tyrant has been deposed, democracy has not reigned. Anarchy and worse cruelties have taken its place. When a group of people are uncivilized, dare i say evil, you require a bigger evil to shock them into line and force them to be civilized.
Read up on some history and politics. Reality requires some necessary evils, and so would any plausible fantasy world.

You speak the language of the shitlords. And here I thought i was the only one on this site... Have an edgy pony meme, sir.

You have courage. In a lot of places for saying such facts, you instantly get ostracized as fascist and everything worst on the world.
When peoples don't understand word of law and don't want to understand it, then they need to understand tip of sword of law.
9179032
I agree Sombra should wake up Sunset and Moondancer and offer them the same thing, I have a feeling that Sunset would take Sombra up on his offer if she hears that Celestia sold them for Twilight, Moondancer might also stay as well and Starlight goes to the mines still.
I know her heart was in the right place near the end, but goddammit, Starlight!!
9180197
Yes, from a political and national security kind of view Celestia chose what seemed to be the most preferable option, but it will still, most likely, lead to Sombra and Fluttershy gaining the kind of "subjects" who can be very helpful for their campaign, and Equestria and the Crystal Empire will have to face strong enemies who could have been allies instead.
Though what interests me now is:
1) What will Starlight do when she is confronted with the real world when the pirates come after her in order to "punish" Sombra?
2) And how will Twilight react to all this? Because being forced to abandon her friends as the Princess of Friendship defies everything she normally stands for.
9179798
9180184
BZZZTTT! Wrong again. Sombra specifically asked her to join him in defending New Haven. Does that mean removing the bandits, pirates, and other MURDERERS, RAPISTS AND CANNIBALS? Why yes, yes it does. That's not murder, that's BEING A SOLDIER DURING A TIME OF WAR. Because make no mistake Sombra and Fluttershy ARE AT WAR WITH THE REAL MONSTERS. A war THEY DID NOT START. The monsters did. The monsters attacked the manor house, fully intent on murdering anyone who resisted, raping anyone they wanted and making slaves of anyone that survived. They even butchered the Crystal Empire's guards, delivering their severed heads in a bag to Sombra's hooves. And Sombra's response to this declaration of war has been both simple and JUSTIFIED. Kill the monsters and free the slaves.
The Roman Empire was once considered the pinnacle of morality and civilization, and its fall was one of the major causes of the Dark Ages, a period where all of Europe fell into barbarism that was no better than the peninsula in this story. Nearly two thousand years of law and civilization when you include the republic era as well. But make no mistake, that empire, and the republic that it would become, was built at the edge of the sword. The Imperial Legion of Rome was once the greatest fighting force the world had ever seen and they civilized parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East through bloody conquest. Because when Law fails/doesn't exist then Order must be (re)established through violence.
And that example isn't singular. There are COUNTLESS others where law and civilization had to either be established/restored through force of arms. Nearly every single nation in the world, including ALL of the current superpowers, were formed by conquest or bloody revolution. Including 'moral/good/ect' nations like the US. And before someone goes "But X was justified in doing Y" ask yourself if Sombra & Fluttershy's conquest is any less justified. Because they are making war on MURDERERS, RAPISTS, AND CANNIBALS, to make life safe for good, law abiding civilians.
As for "But Twilight and Co only tried to kill Sombra to save Fluttershy", WRONG AGAIN. If freeing Fluttershy was the only goal then killing Sombra was NOT REQUIRED AT ALL. They are four of the most powerful/skilled mages in Equestrian history. Are you trying to say they couldn't have found a way to sneak into the manor, get to Fluttershy, and then teleport the fuck out of dodge? Performing a snatch and grab on Fluttershy would have been FAR simpler. Hell summoning Discord and asking him to snap his fucking claws would have been simpler. Because as powerful as Sombra is there is ZERO chance that Discord couldn't simply overcome any magic trying to force Fluttershy to stay. And they CAN summon up Discord easily, as proven by Twilight summoning him out of a shower/bath.
But they didn't do any of that. They went straight to assassination to remove what they felt was a threat. And yet Starlight wants to preach morality. She wants to claim moral superiority because she doesn't think killing RAPISTS, MURDERERS AND CANNIBALS is justified. But killing Sombra is. And even if she wants to claim that they only wanted Sombra dead for taking Fluttershy, THAT MAKES IT WORSE. That's claiming that rape, murder and EATING PEOPLE isn't a capitol offense worthy of execution, but kidnapping their friend is.
Was Sombra a monster? Yes. Is he one still? Debatable. But NONE of the bandits, pirates, ect on the Hook Coast are any better. If their crimes don't warrant execution then Sombra's assassination wasn't justified either. If they should be allowed second chances, just like Starlight WHO IS GUILTY OF CAUSING MASS GENOCIDE ON AT LEAST A NATIONAL SCALE, got, then Sombra should be allowed one as well. But they didn't offer one. There was no attempt to free Fluttershy through non-violent means. There was only an assassination attempt on a stallion who is clearly HOLDING BACK. Because make no mistake he COULD have killed all of them by simply going right for the kill straight away/killing them right after the fight. But he knew that Fluttershy wouldn't want that. So Sombra, 'the real monster', restrained his violence, while the 'good' ponies went straight for murder.
Who is the real monster again?
9179808
A month later, Starlight returns to Canterlot with her freedom.
Celestia: "What In The Goddamn?!"
9180755
Ok, dude, first off you are massively overthinking all this. Second, Sombra. Sombra is still the monster. He’s just a monster that eats other monsters and is the necessary monster for this region. That’s not in dispute. Third, they were following Twilight’s lead in taking out someone that, for all they knew, without knowing his true intentions, figured he was going to rule the land there the same tyrannical, evil and, follow me here, indiscriminate way he did the Crystal Empire. As he admitted, he was barbaric for the sake of barbarism. Without aim or purpose, which his millennia in ethereal stasis watching helplessly has given him. They didn’t know, and were in that regard justified in a preemptive strike. Nor did they know how things had progressed between him and Fluttershy in only a few days. As far as they knew, it was going to be kill or be killed. Fourth, Discord had been registered as absent for some time at the start, so he would be of no help until he gets back. When ever that’ll be... When he does though, I’m sure he will be plenty pissed at first until Fluttershy reigns him in, much I am sure to Sombra’s indignation. As king he should handle such a crisis, but he would be helpless and quite likely humiliated publicly by the Spirit of Chaos, at least for a bit, until his wife steps in. With someone with as much pride as him... that’d be way worse than a cannibal pirate invasion bruh.
