It's going to be Scootaloo's nineteenth birthday soon. Everypony who knows and loves her is going, but Twilight learns that Scootaloo wants to invite a pony neither of them had seen in a long time: Lightning Dust.

Despite what happened years go, Scootaloo wants to help her as she explains how she met Lighting Dust and the condition the crusader found her in.

Although still a novice flier, Twilight has begun to feel comfortable in the sky. But when Rainbow Dash asks her to enter a flying pairs competition with her, she believes that her inexperience will only hinder her friend's chances of winning. Twilight's misgivings deepen when Rainbow learns that two old rivals will be competing as well, and her desire to win begins to drive a wedge between them. Full of doubt of her own abilities and anger toward Rainbow's fierce ambition to beat the others, will Twilight overcome these obstacles and compete with her friend, or will she quit the competition altogether?

Lightning Dust has dreamed her whole life of becoming a Wonderbolt just like her father. Ever since she learned how to fly, she has strived to become the greatest flier in Equestria. She'll do anything it takes to become the best, but at what cost? Has she lost her only chance at fulfilling her dreams because of her disregard for other ponies, or will Spitfire grant her a second chance.

Lightning Dust's dream of being a Wonderbolt is on the verge of collapse. Just moments ago, she was the standout among this year's enlisted cadets.

She left the academy dejected, her confidence shattered. Still, she knew what she had to do. This would not stand. She would overcome being discharged from the academy.

Little did Lightning Dust know that her resolve would betray her, causing her to become her own worst enemy.

The suppressed thoughts, feelings and fears that lurk in the back of one's mind can manifest themselves into the most horrifying of dreams. And Lightning Dust is about to find herself locked in a dream she cannot escape from, one that she can't control.

This story is a sequel to The Thousand Year Change

In the world of the Thousand Year Change, Lightning Dust was a member of the Lunar Guard. Her journey was full of laughs, friends, loses, and sacrifice. Her last act was one of selflessness, giving up her life in order to save the world.

However, that's not the same in cannon Equestria where she is a disgrace from the Wonderbolts. Where she hops from town to town, drowning her anger in root beer. It looks like things will never get better for her until a certain purple princess approaches her with an offer that will change her life.
