It's been one hundred years since all of Spike's friends passed away. All he has now is Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and sometimes Discord.
Feeling lonely one night, Spike remembers befriending the dragon princess, Ember, and decides to finally visit her after all these years.
They have a lot to catch up on.
Spike and Smoulder want to hang out with Ocellus over spring break. That's good! But they're going to the dragon lands. That's bad! But Ocellus is a shapeshifter. That's good! But Ocellus has a thing for dragons, and oh no this just got complicated...
Big thanks to Salty Alty's editing for making this nice and readable

Dragons are good at fighting. Very good at it. Supurb, even.
So why are the dragonlands utter garbage?
This was the question that plagued Princess Ember when she became the Dragonlord. She had already proven her strength and power in the gauntlet of fire. In the end, though, it was Spike who retrieved the Bloodstone Scepter. Spike the clanless, whose form had no power, who worked with ponies of all things...
Something was going to need to change. And one thing Ember knew, Dragons... disliked... change.
This was originally for the Imposing Sovereigns competition, but was not able to complete it at the time. Cover art by Cider-Crave.
Ember wants to see the rise of a smarter, friendlier dragon society in the future. For her dragon subjects, this presents quite a steep learning curve.
This story is a sequel to Sparkles and Scales
A collection of short stories based on Sparkle and Scales.
Twilight Sparkle may have achieved her dream of getting into Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns (even after being turned into a dragon), and became the personal student of the Princess herself, but those are only the first steps on a much longer road.
Still ahead of her are her first days at her new school, trying to make new friends, understanding her changed biology, being a big sister, and discovering just what some ponies think of her new species.
She has a long way to go before she can rediscover the Elements of Harmony. These are just some of the events on the way.

It's a well known fact that the bulk of a dragon's diet is gemstones.
To the far north of the land lies the Crystal Empire, where basically everything is made of crystal and gemstones. Included in this is a massively powerful ancient artifact.
Garble has a stupid plan and a bottle of hot sauce.
