When Twilight's friends wanted to decorate the whole castle, they didn't think that it would be so hard to do!

After their first attempt came out... less than well, they put their heads together and decided to call on an expert. Rarity had said, "I think i know just the pony for the job, darlings."

That's when they called me in, flattered as I was that they'd chosen me. It was time to get to work and make some changes. The place needed some... Charm.

(takes place during an alternate version of Castle, Sweet Castle)

Might proceed, but this is likely a one-shot.

This story is a sequel to Power Up

Twilight created a spell to see who can wield an Element of Harmony. She invites anyone to come and test if they can. Naturally, many ponies think it's a great honor to be an Element, and even if they don't, well, at least they got to meet a Princess, right?
Of course, not everyone has the same reactions to the results.

Richard Emmerson, a retired US cavalryman, and his somehow talking horse, Coal, are transported to Equestria. Their circumstances lead them to adventure all around the land and cause quite a commotion. Join them in their undertaking to find a way back home as they dodge all sorts of obstacles in this seemingly hostile environment.

Author's Update: This story has been placed on hiatus for the time being. I am more focused and have more drive to finish "Put it to Rest" at the present moment. In addition, this was my very first story and contains a lot of nonsensical plot points, weird characters just popping out of nowhere, and plots that I basically glued together with a bunch of Elmer's glue and threw it in. I hate to admit it, but when I started this story, I was in my edgy teen stage and it CLEARLY shows. I'm still trying to figure out where I'm taking this story or if I want to continue it at all. If I end up cancelling it, I will make sure to release what I envisioned ended up happening to Richard in the end. I'll likely rewrite it as well since I think the concept of an old US Cavalryman engaging in Equestrian society is an interesting one, just not well-executed here.

Light. A good thing. The sun, the stars, the moon, shining bright and powerful, lighting the way for life to progress. Good things are often called bright, hope is viewed as the light at the end of the tunnel. Darkness. A bad thing, if not evil, then sinister. Hidden places, nightmares in the dark, monsters lurking where they are hidden. Dark hearts, dark thoughts, evil things. The absence of light. All of this is true.

However, light can burn, or blind. And darkness can save, cloaking you to hide you from enemies. Where roles are reversed, and what was good becomes bad by sheer purity, and what was bad become good due to use. Light and darkness are not good and evil. They might err toward their respective morality, but they are not good and evil.

Equestria was taken by darkness a long time ago. What little light is left is barely enough. But it is a time when not all is right. Not everything is known, or understood. When good and evil blur together, and every action cannot be known to be correct. Can the world be saved? And if so, from what?

The Grand Galloping Gala is awful.

It can banish itself to the nearest heavenly body willing to put up with it, for all Celestia cares.

That doesn't change that fact that she has to be there, as head of state.

But maybe, just maybe, with a little help, it will be different this year.

Spike and Rarity meet at a formal gala and have a long overdue conversation. Truth's are shared, feelings made clear and both come away on good terms if unhappy.

I feel the writers have abandoned the whole Spike X Rarity thing and this was a short resolution that came out of my head one interminable train ride.
