Losing a child is the most terrifying thing that can happen to a parent.

Sunset Shimmer had been gone for years. Celestia had never really given up hope that she would see her again, but the doubt had always been in the back of her mind: what if she never returns? The echoes of their last fight followed her all those years.

And now that Sunset Shimmer has returned, Celestia wants to see her again. She has an offer to make, to a filly she raised as a daughter.

To Ember, ponies are the boogie men, villains in story books, and alien creatures that roam the land. His perception is radically changed after he captures one alive; and they are nothing like he imagined. Now, to fulfill the promise he made to the pony, he will risk his life to get her safely home.

The next day Starlight awakes to find herself trapped in a waking nightmare. Twilight and her friends now have to find Starlight, and discover just what happened to their newest friend. Can they learn the truth before it's too late, or will the nightmare last forever?

Strange things happen in Ponyville. Foals start to disappear; their parents and siblings, struck by grief, will resort to every mean to find the cause. Some of them blame timberwolves; some blame the zebra living in the forest. Some of them even blame their fellow ponies. None of them, however, suspects a little filly suffering from insomnia...

One day after talking with Starlight, Spike begins to glow most unusually. He quickly realizes that this is the call of the dragon lord, and that means he is needed in the dragon lands again.

Not willing to send the dragon off on his own, Twilight decides have to Starlight go with him, hoping the change of scenery will help her student get over her recent failure to redeem Queen Chrysalis.

But upon arriving in the dragon lands, Spike and Starlight discover that Dragon Lady Ember is facing a challenge to her authority in the form of Garble, and the possibility of war looms overhead. To make matters worse, Starlight doesn't see how she'll be of any help.

After all, if Starlight couldn't redeem Queen Chrysalis, how is she supposed to help a species she knows nothing about? Will Spike and Starlight be able to help, or will it be up to Spike alone to save the day?
