Diamond Tiara tries to keep herself occupied during another sleepless night.

Part of a little writing project with Mattricole, seeing how each of us would write a story about Diamond Tiara having insomnia. Be sure to have a look at his take on the idea here. It's a bit funnier.

Also, check out Sleepless, by Samey90, which was inspired by this story.

This is much more serious than Mattricole's one. Both are good though.

Well, that was...dark.:twilightoops:
Poor diamond...

Yeah. The more I wrote this, the more I realized how awful insomnia would be. Thus, the story evolved into something less fluffy than originally intended. Sleepless nights have never been fun for me.

I know how you feel man - I've never had serious, medication worthy insomnia, but I have had it for 3-4 days at a time and that was unpleasant enough. I don't want to think about what it must be like for people who really suffer from it - my heart goes out to them.

I really like the idea of Silver Spoon making random giant spoons for ponies, who then have no idea what to do with the things. I can see her getting an intervention later in life.

Diamond Tiara working so hard on a Cutie Mark Crusader-tier bad idea is deliciously ironic. Yes, she's horribly sleep-deprived, but I could still see the Crusaders working on building a filly-launching catapult in the hopes of earning their siege engineer cutie mark. Heck, they'd gladly build her one if they got the chance to launch her. :scootangel:

In any case, a nice blend of humor and heartache. Tiara's so used to getting what she wants that she's just not equipped to handle a refusal. Certainly not one from her own body. You genuinely made me feel for her, which is an accomplishment in itself. Thank you for this story.

Diamond Tiara tries to keep herself occupied during another sleepless night.

Hmm, that sounds a bit like a clopfic premise... Or I just have a really dirty mind. :scootangel:

Okay, nevermind, time to read the story.

Silver Spoon definitely has a problem. Not a big one, just a tiny, little obsession with spoons :pinkiehappy: And Diamond is on a good way to become a serial killer... :pinkiecrazy:

Driven mad by her inability to sleep, Diamond Tiara finds release in the darkest of places. One-by-one, little ponies around town start going missing. Some blame Timberwolves, others blame the zebra who lives outside of Ponyville. None suspect that one of their own little schoolfillies is responsible for the heinous crimes.

Dude, that could be a good thriller, if done carefully.

Someone has to write this... Hmm, I'm currently writing two multichapters and a thesis (I'll hopefully be done with it by the end of the next week), but there's always a room for one more... Though I'm not sure if I'd pull this off alone.

Also, derpibooru gives me everything I need today...

That ending seems unexpectedly dark.
4467141
Well, it's better than what I took out of context.

Maybe she should try doing things that the toys weren't intended for....

4467322
Yeah, sometimes I end up doing that.

4467264
You're welcome to give it a shot. I've never really tried my hand at much real horror, so I dunno how well I could pull it off alone, either.

4467322
Hmm, I kinda thought about that too... And you don't want to know how I misread "rubber duck" at first... :rainbowlaugh:

4467390
Hmm, my first story was murder mystery (by my current standards it's really bad), so it'll be a nice come back for me. Or maybe I'll make it a psychodelic horror. Or both :pinkiecrazy:

Man. That ending got me. It was somewhat foreshadowed by the mention of the doctor, but still hit me hard. Insomnia can be horrible to deal with. Poor Diamond...

Geez, glad I wasn't struck by that till my teens. That was unexpectedly full of feels, I chuckled a few times, but then it got real.

If I was her father I wouldn't know much else to do at that point aside from checking with a doctor for any age appropriate sleeping aids, which no doubt he's done already. Not that those help much the older you get. I feel bad for Filthy being a single parent (or at least the only one ever shown around Diamond) as he just isn't used to these types of situations. Diamond's suffering no doubt must be making him feel so helpless.

Great stuff, funny, and had some great show callbacks with Flight to the Finish. You sir, pay attention to detail. Hehe, I have to say, she made me d'aww the way she described Silver. I want to read more stories with Silver being something other than a useless doormat who needs to find a way out of such a 'horrible' friendship and crawls and pleads to wanting to be the CMC's nerdy buddy with downs syndrome. She just gets a crappy deal in fanon. Glad to see writers like you, Matt, Yukito, Frank, and some others who actually give that poor grey filly some personality and adorable quirks.

But yeah, back to the story, this was a really well executed take on something that afflicts many of us and it was amazing how you managed to pull it off with a character many in the fandom would rather avoid seeing anything about lest it softens their unhealthy levels of dislike towards Diamond Tiara and to a lesser extent Silver Spoon.

This story certainly deserves more views. It's cute. It's funny. But it's always serious in showing us what others live with, through the eyes of a filly no one expected would have such an issue. Bravo, Bootsy. Bravo.

I wonder if there is a group for people with Insomnia? I'd totally submit this story there.

4466959
Thank you for your kind words. I had hoped I didn't get too melodramatic at the end there.

4468557
Thanks, Tela. Ahh, making people feel sympathetic to Diamond Tiara. 'Tis something I like doing, though I haven't tried it for a while. In fact, seeing if I could pull that off is why I wrote my first DT story in the first place. Not that the character hasn't grown on me since. Silver's actually a little more fun to play with in some ways, just because I like making her kinda silly. I certainly try not to neglect Diamond, though (or her father).

You can thank Matt for suggesting this little project to me, and Mudpony for inspiring him. Without those two, this wouldn't exist.

I was originally gonna make this another "Nothing Happens" story, but I kinda realized that a problematic issue like this deserves more than a story about nothing. And thus, it got a bit darker and heavier. Not complaining about how it turned out, though, as I still rather enjoy doing darker and more serious works. Glad to see you liked it.

Inability to sleep due to a guilty conscious. We've all had one or two of those nights. :unsuresweetie:

Please, for the love of Celestia, somepony make this happen...

Well, re-reading it after some time was interesting. I caught a couple of references to your other stories I didn't know back when I read it for the first time :twistnerd:

Would going insane be fun?

In the context of Sleepless, this line now sounds menacing...

Also, as usual, I just had to read something out of context... :facehoof: This time it was that line:

She'd tried sleeping with her father for a while, then sleeping with Silver, but nothing ever changed.

Eeyup. I rather like doing that, usually with Diamond or Silver stories, since I've done so many. I just went through to see how many there were, and I count eight references here (though six of them are just mentions of other things I've written about). Nine if you count the whole "You're such a nerd, Silver Spoon," thing.

Would going insane be fun?

Harsher in Hindsight, indeed. When writing this, this line was the moment I realized I didn't want this to be a "Nothing Happens" story, because this is a subject that deserves some substance and weight.

She'd tried sleeping with her father for a while, then sleeping with Silver, but nothing ever changed.

Heh heh. That time, it wasn't on purpose, just kinda an unavoidable implication of the wording. I'm still surprised nobody jumped on me for the line in that sleepover story where Fluttershy yells, "Oh, Rainbow, I'm coming."

4875547
I also like to connect my stories, which sometimes leads to fridge horror. For example, there's a hint in Way To Go, Minuette, Way To Go! that it takes place in the same universe as Crow Maud...

Yeah, the wording can sometimes lead to interesting things... I'm also guilty of this – in the latest chapter of AKD there was such a passage:

They went to Rarity’s room. Twilight lit her horn and locked the door, simultaneously conjuring a soundproof barrier around the chamber.

Things can get loud, she thought.

As a result of "things", Rarity woke up in Twilight's brand new sex dungeon torture chamber...

There's also chapter 12, though in that case, things like:

“That was awesome!” she exclaimed. Cloudchaser was lying on her back, panting heavily, her wings spread and twitching.

quickly followed by Dash saying “I’m gonna show you something you’ve never seen before…” may have been intentional...

4875622
Ahh, the fun of multiple meanings and ambiguity. That reminds me that I have some catching up to do on AKD.

Wait, why was she thinking about that at all? Who cared about something so nerdy and lame? Not Diamond. Maybe Silver. Silver was a nerd. She even had nerdy glasses. Total nerd. But she was Diamond's nerd, and if anypony else made fun of her for being a nerd, they'd have Diamond Tiara to answer to. Nopony made fun of Silver except her. Just one of the many perks of being Diamond's friend, right up there with getting to use her pool and access to her social networking skills, not to mention Diamond's brilliant puns.

Indeed. Not a fun time.

5170672 insomnia seriously sucks! These days I only get it if I REALLY need to be up and at my best the next day.:facehoof:

Going through a bout of insomnia myself, I can definitely relate to this.

She threw the bear at her box of toys, took a step toward it, and slipped on a marble. Her chin hit the floor, and she didn't bother to get up.

Hey, at least she didn't step on a Lego *Cringe*

6821842
Iv'e been there myself before, it sucks so badly

She kept rolling until her face was pressed into the pillow. Hey, maybe if she held her face down and didn't breathe, she'd pass out and get some sleep. No, wait, that was stupid. Like, really stupid.

Actually, since breathing is an autonomic function of the body, it wouldn't have been So what Filthy Rich needs to do is apply a sleeper hold to Diamond Tiara, wait for her to pass out, and then make sure that she's breathing.

"Why did they put all of those little... dang, what were those things called? Were those stalagmites or stalactites? One of them hangs, and the other sticks up, so which one... or did that only apply to caves?"

The ones on the ceiling hold on tite.
You mite bang your shins on the ones on the floor.
