Lyra Heartstrings is a up-and-coming musician living in the quiet town of Ponyville. Her marefriend Bon Bon owns and operates Canter Candies, the town's specialty sweets shop. They've been together for years, and everypony around knows what a happy couple they are. But any relationship has its ups and downs, and it's hard to ignore every awkward moment.

Like when Lyra's ex arrives in town.
Because she thinks Lyra still has a thing for her.
Because someone's been impersonating her for the past few years.

It all began during a terrible storm. Two mares with an awkward and bitter past end up forced to share each others company. A kindness offered and a kindness reciprocated. And before either one knew what was happening they were both tumbling head over hooves. But into what? Friendship? Or something more.

Wanted: Porter, assistant, jack-of-all-trades, minion. Applicants should be strong, loyal, pain tolerant, cold tolerant, unambitious. Must be capable of following simple instructions. Ideal applicant should be of low to average intelligence and mildly deformed, but exceptions will be made for extraordinary candidates, with extraordinariness to be determined by employer. Must be willing to begin work immediately.

Remuneration will be in the form of room, board, and insight into the true nature of the cosmos. Extremely generous bonuses up to and including subcontinents may be awarded if merited and if circumstances permit. Bon Bon's voice is funny, and that's about all that anypony who meets her notices, as her marefriend Lyra soon steals the spotlight with her explosive personality, strange obsessions, and curious beliefs. And why not? Bon Bon is, after all, a perfectly ordinary, boring pony in every way but two: her voice, and the carefully kept secret that she isn't really a pony.

When she attempts a summoning spell that goes horribly awry, Lyra manages to break Discord free from his stone prison. The ensuing snowball of unfortunate events leaves her imbued with the power of chaos at her hooftips.

For being found very, very guilty of crimes against ponies, Trixie is offered a choice by Luna: one year in prison, or probation and a new job: becoming Appleloosa's new Sheriff.

But the conditions of her parole are steep: Rule One: Thou must Protect the Innocent and Uphold the Law. Rule Two: Thou cannot Lie or Boast about things Thou hast not done. Rule Three: Thou may only use thy magic in discharge of thy duties."

If Trixie fails any of the three conditions, she will go to the Crystal Empire Prison for three years. Now, under the watchful eye of Braeburn, she must adjust to her new life as peacekeeper instead of troublemaker, truth-teller instead of busted boaster, hero instead of villain.
