Canterlot Consequences - Kinsfire

No one apologized to Twilight during the wedding episode. How might this have affected her?

Chapter 4

The wedding was considered a success, between Rainbow Dash’s Sonic Rainboom and Twilight’s gift of song to the new married couple. Luna stepped up to her sister in a quiet moment and shook her head. “You have no idea how much I envy you, sister. Twilight Sparkle is an amazing mare, with such heart, and such a connection to you. She loves you very much. In some ways, you are more mother to her than her own flesh and blood. That in itself is amazing, given how clearly her family loves her.”

“You should begin your own set of correspondences with her, Luna.” She looked at her younger sibling and smiled. “You complain about your usage of archaic language, perhaps you could convince Twilight and her friends to tutor you and gently correct you?” At Luna’s soft blush, she corrected herself. “Perhaps just Twilight? Since you would obviously be embarrassed by too many knowing of your problem.”

“That would perhaps not be a -”

“I agree,” Celestia interrupted. “It would certainly not be a bad idea. Twilight!” she called out brightly in the Royal Canterlot Voice, humor evident in the call. “May I speak with you for a moment?”

“I shall get you for this, ‘Tia,” Luna said through gritted teeth.

“If I am wrong, and you are hurt, then by all means, I shall stand still and let you ‘get me’,” Celestia replied. “But I suspect that it might be the best thing for you since you were freed from your time as Nightmare Moon.”

“You know that she was me, and not some overlay from elsewhere?” Luna said. “You always refer to that time as if it were an entirely different being.”

“I know, my darling sister, but I say it as such to remind you that it was a different time. There is something inside me that … well, the histories do not talk much of it, but something similar happened to me in my anger at my inability to stop you without exiling you. Call it a blaze, since there is perhaps not a word to describe a similar darkness befalling one connected so deeply to the day. That was not a happy time for our little ponies. But make no mistake, sister, I love you, and interfere at times because I love you. Much as Twilight did for her brother.”

“Did I come over at a bad time?” Twilight asked softly.

“No, I was just reminding my dear sister that she has ponies to lean upon when she needs to. I called you over because Luna was commenting to me about her tendency to slip into archaic language. Perhaps you would be willing to tutor her?”

“Of course! I would be glad to!” She looked to the princess in question, who was attempting to look regal, but was still sporting a very slight pinkness to her cheeks. She smiled. “Perhaps over a series of lunches? Private, so that she isn’t embarrassed if she slips up? Maybe even some nice picnics in Ponyville, to give her a reason to get out of the castle now and then?”

Luna’s eyes widened for a moment, and then she smiled. “I think that I would enjoy that, Twilight.”

“I thought so.” Her smile widened. “You perhaps said more than you knew when you thanked me, and that could be worth exploring … Luna.”

Celestia’s eyes widened, but sparkled with mirth. It was the first time that she had ever heard her student refer to either of them without prefacing their name with their title. I believe that this could be the start of something very interesting, she thought as the two walked off, working out a schedule of visits.

I must have missed the TwiLuna shipping, because that seemed to come out of nowhere.

This wrapped up far too quickly for my tastes, but hey, it was good while it lasted.

That's our Twilight - I'm convinced that her element is Friendship, not Magic. Friendship and good relationships with those in her life is tremendously important to her always. I am sure that if Celestia were to ask her to help somepony, she'd do so at once without hesitation, not because Celestia asked but because somepony needs help. :twilightblush:

2173836
FWIW, I didn't see any TwilLuna shipping in that moment, only the first touches of a deep and intimate friendship. Twilight is always embarrassingly eager to help and Luna is understandably embarrassed at needing help, especially from such a young and sometimes neurotic personality. It is really too early to be talking of shipping although, I suppose if that floats your boat it could ultimately go that way.

2173924 I hope it doesn't go that way.

Deep friendship=awesome

Twiluna=notsomuch

I love this story so far, and I think it really portrays Twilight's character well- I hope to see more of this!

2176394 I read it ages ago. I'd completely forgotten about that. I didn't even think of it or its sequel when I made the comment.

It really was overshadowed quite badly.

2173924

This was more what I was after. I was aware that it couldn't help but give hints of TwiLuna, but I couldn't find a better way to deal with it.

I would have liked to lengthen the story, but my attempts to do so looked like what every teacher dreads - obvious padding for word count. So I left it where it was. You reach a point where you either go with what you've got, or never release something because it's just not absolutely perfect.

2173924 If you think about it, The Elements of Harmony could also be called The Elements of Friendship, since the Elements represents what a good friend needs
As for you, author, enjoyed this story, I would like to do some recomendations but I don't want to sound bad, I'm not perfect either :twilightsheepish:
The only thing that I didn't like was the fact that my favourite pony, Fluttershy, didn't say anything. :fluttershyouch:

2413976 Well, just after Nightmare Moon was defeated, but before Celestia showed up, Applejack DID call them "The Elements of Friendship" so I have to agree

2413907

"Person" does not necessarily imply human. Any sentient being can have a personality and therefore be a person.

MY cynicism has wilted away even just a little. But I still kinda wish they've faced the consequences of their actions a little bit more...:trixieshiftleft::trixieshiftright:

One thing I didn't liked about Post Nuptrials style stories is that others were beating themselves up for it too much (IT may unintentionally rub salt on their wounds for people like me) and although the story ended up with both Twilight and the others both admitted their mistakes. I would've liked the story even more if Twilight tells her that she was upset/disappointed beforehand thus making the whole "Beating themselves up" justifiable.

Nevertheless, I need to update Bitterness soon. I'm aware how cynical or even nihilistic my story sounds but the theme is not only about forgiveness but WHY you should forgive as a reminder to myself.

3162526
does that mean that one of my ideas ,"Twilight being the one to look inside herself and forgive will be used?"

3162526 Personally, I prefer that they felt remorse on their own WITHOUT having to be called on it first. One of the many problems with that episode, in my opinion, is that none of them acknowledged any wrongdoing at all on their parts until the emotion-draining tyrant pointed it out to them. I personally appreciate that the others were the ones to breech the issue first, as it felt more sincere on their parts.

3228026

Personally we need a villain who cannot understand WHY the others felt remorseful, sorta like Pony version of Eric Cartman

4278013 She did, but some people told me that she apologized for not believing her, not for abandoning her.

4288594 What MysteriousStranger said, plus said "apology" was really half-hearted considering how hurtful her actions were. Twilight has given MUCH more sincere apologies for lesser infractions.

"Sorry, Twi. We should've listened to you."

Compare to Twilight's apology to Zecora back in "Bridle Gossip" for something that Applejack and Pinkie Pie were more at fault for...neither of whom apologized :applejackunsure:

4300304> That was supposed to be in reply to Chaos Nightfall, sorry about that :applejackconfused:

5124975 Fair enough, but what also grinds me is that she beats herself over not getting proof of her claims. As some wise person already stated during a discussion:

In fairness to everyone in the episode, there really wasn't much evidence or time to gather it. If Twilight had gone through things properly, the wedding would be over by the time she had anything to show for her efforts.

You can't blame her for being desperate.

5232834

And that's true, i totally support Twilight's anger, but don't be mad at the ONE PONY who apologized.

5251233 Indeed. My assessment is Applejack is the only pony who has a right to look Twilight in the eyes after the horrible events of the invasion and everything associated with it.

why are they trying to make Luna's accent, there fine with AJ and Rarity's accent so why do they hate her's so march? i think they shored let her keep her cute accent and stop being jerks

5737791
Nobody hates her accent. Luna wants to drop it because she feels she's not speaking like a normal pony. Twilight even tried to reassure her that she was talking like normal pony, her accent just wasn't modern.

TwiLuna yes and happy ending double yes!

Most enjoyable--I like how you acknowledged how both sides had their wrongs (Twilight really did approach horribly), but only one was truly hurt in the whole debacle (especially when you look back afterwards).

Although I do wonder who added this to the Momlestia group. Although there's definite affection here, nothing really implies it goes beyond friendship and a strong mentor-student bond.

6401322 Momlestia? That's a new one on me. And not sure how it would fit either. Certainly wasn't meant that way.

That's what you get for presenting your evidence in the most jackass and hostile manner possible.

9047192
Not really sloppy. Quick, yes, sloppy, ehh nah. Definitely different.

need's to be longer

Finally got sprung to reading this and, WOW.
This is a story that knows how to potray Twilight IC properly and so accurately I'm speculating that a writer of the Show is on this (oh, wait, the writers are terrible) and the feels just strike at the heart! Let me repeat, just strike at the heart!
You get a fav from me.

9394615
So the Canterlot fiasco is Twilights fault?
True she was at fault for not bringing proof but so was every single pony their. The Mane five along with Shining Armor and Celestia had the brain power of a fly.Not to mention them continually ignoring the clues that were right in front of their faces. And dont even try and say that Shining was brainwashed, he wasn`t brainwashed until the actual wedding itself.

She barged into a wedding, harassed and slandered the bride (with no evidence), and threw a hissy fit.

Now, the others are just as much to blame if not more so for not listening to and ditching her. But Twilight messed up as well.

9567868
Yeah, a person, a kind and funny person comes back. You find out that they are marrying your brother, and when you greet her... You are left with this weird person. She's NOTHING like you remember her. She's not kind, she doesn't even KNOW YOU. She doesn't know your "secret handshake"... For given meaning of secret... And as you watch her it piles up more and more. She doesn't care about festivities, she does something weird to your brother, and for gods sake. she's AWFUL AT LYING. I couldn't comprehend HOW she even had anyone fooled at that wedding. She goes from mean to wounded gazelle in FRONT OF EVERYONE. Just, ARGGHH.

Everyone seems to argue that it could be "prewedding jitters" or some such crap. Do nerves make you forget a person ENTIRELY, A person that they babysit for who knows how long. Probably several years. Do they change your character COMPLETE 180, from kind and caring person to complete ice queen that doesn't remember the "filly she loved to babysit the most"? And yeah, good luck finding PROOF. Your own memories are all the proof you should need. How do you prove that a person you knew MANY YEARS AGO had CERTAIN CHARACTER, and now it's DIFFERENT? Video? They live in internet free era. Letters? I doubt Twilight had any letters that Cadance and her parents exchanged for arranging the babysitting.

Good luck proving that the person you knew way back when is different...

Actually, applejack did say sorry to her, right before the changelings got flung out.

I feel like there are so many good moments in this chapter.

5586457

Applejack is the only pony who has a right to look Twilight in the eyes

Negatory, Ghostrider.
Yes, she may have been the only one with enough decency to actually apologize, but words are cheap and it doesn't make her any less guilty than the rest. An apology doesn't undo the harm that's been done, it is merely the first step in the right direction. And that's where in the canon they all failed Twi a second time, including her. So, worthless apology: confirmed.

11351301
You misunderstand. I didn't say she didn't still bear any guilt or need to do more. I simply meant to say she was the only one who had done anything to move in the right direction at all, thereby acknowledging her failure.

I do agree a great deal more could and should have happened on screen. MLP is often guilty of that.

11351334
He was already having migraines, and Chrysalis was using mind manipulation magic. I won’t deny he said those things of his own free will, but given all that, it’s safe to say he wasn’t himself at the time.

Also, kinda funny how you didn’t ask me why Spike was spared from my anger?

11351362
Ok, can't argue there ... and the show was rather vague about the details/extent of Chrissy's mind fuckery.
As for Spike: Well, he's Spike, right? He got a lot of flak over the years for situations in which he was actually the only voice of reason, he was denied his due recognition as support mvp to a point where his fame in the Crystal Empire felt like mockery ... I am willing to overlook one of the very few times he's actually messed up. And to be fair, he was a teen, a baby in size, surrounded by angry immortals, guard captains and element bearers, who were all in agreement that his guardian was in the wrong and out of line. What was the little guy supposed to think let alone do about it.
(I'd have to re-watch the episode and check what exactly he did or did not say/do, but I remember him being the one character I wasn't angry at back then. So he gets the Spike bonus for said reasons^^)

11351331
I don't think I misunderstood ... in this fic, in that one short moment, I'd say your statement is correct.
But there is no AU tag and it's written to fit in between episodes, which is why I mentioned show canon and that in the end AJ didn't follow through and ignored the incident like everyone else.
Well, at least her attempt at an apology seemed more sincere than the convenient and self-righteous spin Rarity put on it afterwards.

I was rather hesitant and almost didn't upvote this fic ... for completely wrong reasons.
What made me hesitate was the quite frustrating content of Twi's letter and her conversation in the library.
I say frustrating, not bad. After re-reading some parts and thinking about it for few more minutes I realized that it was frustrating because of how in-character for book horse it actually was. That part of the story pulls all the stops in regards to her characterisation, but nothing is really over the top. Twilight is just being Twilight to a degree that makes me want to alternate between shaking and hugging her ... which, ironically, is exactly what Candance and Luna are doing in that scene (only verbal shaking but proper cuddles). So yeah, what initially made me dislike the tone of the story is actually the best thing about it^^.

11351468
That's what I meant. She at least did something, where the others either did nothing, or in one instance did worse than nothing. I kind of agree what she did was not nearly enough as was owed, but it was still better than nothing. It was a step in the right direction.

11577539
Please let me know should you ever find a story like that.

“I thought so.” Her smile widened. “You perhaps said more than you knew when you thanked me, and that could be worth exploring … Luna.”

Hmmmmmmm, interesting......I am not sure if this one sentence is referring to something that I think it's referring to but I really hope it is.
