Well, as I hinted at in the story, Spike is trying to do things his own way somewhat. Yes, he could ask for a loan; but if he's trying to be independent/run his own life, he wouldn't just hit Twilight up for everything. Does that stop him from asking when he knows he needs help? Nah. Just this time, he's trying to not just go ask for money.
