I honestly don't know how i feel about how Jethro is reacting in this chapter...

Same
wonder what is going to happen next i wonder what he will think of canterlot if he goes there
Bro this is the weirdest inner conflict I've ever seen from a fictional character..... like who tf is so conflicted about being friends with someone? That's like going on a 3rd date with someone and being like "omg what if we... what if we hug? oh noooooooo"
Hehe yay more chapters of this story! I await more! As for the MCs reactions it’s intriguing but also believable in a sense.
Things are heating up

Bud... u have no idea
Can't wait for the next
11186190
i think it's more of the human mind set of are they my friends or do they just want something from me, aka friends are just the people who have not yet stabbed you in the back
Personally, I though Twilight's reaction to the portable library was far less excite than I thought it should be.
"It's a Small World"?
You're a monster.

There has never been a singular being on planet Earth who has held the power that either Celestia or Luna hold within them (sans Jesus, yes Bible nerds). Let me reiterate, within them, not without.
Yes, they may both hold government and military power without of themselves, but within, they both have the physical, mystic might to move celestial objects with extreme ease. They are fully capable of of brining down the sun or the moon down, quite literally, on someone's head, should they ever choose to. This is a daunting enough possible feat, as is, but, when one also recalls that they need not use this telekinetic power on a "middle man" and could, quite readily, use it directly on your person, any truly rational mind must come to the conclusion that they are dealing with a living sapient who is the breathing equivalent of 2.9*10^13 megatons of TNT (of which the Tsar Bomb had a paltry yield of 50), at the very least, for Luna, and 3*10^13, at the very very least, for Celestia.
People get intimidated enough by Strong Men who work out their whole lives to be living slabs of concrete muscle, and the vast majority of them are the sweetest men you will ever meet. So when one truly considers what Luna and Celestia are, you can know that they are two very sweet ladies, but to not hold any fear of them and their own power is only possible for people who only ever consider and understand them as fictional creatures you will never ever meet or interact with.
The Author needs to be more realistic about Jethro's reactions. If he keeps reacting so bizarrely then the story will stop being an adventure and become more of a parody. If there is some legitimate magical or hidden reason for his behavior, then it needs to come out soon.
There is afraid, there is worried, there is panic, then there is what Jethro just displayed, and its way out of proportion to the situation as presented. The man has a god in his head and has his own abilities and powers. He is rebuilding the castle for crying out loud. He should not be acting like this.
Does this need to be rewritten? No. Just go forward with a sticky note on your monitor saying, "Jethro is not a nut job."
Monk
I always find it weird how Luna and Celestia are treated as gods despite never coming close to showing such power unless you want to count immortality.
Eh, I can understand his fear of power the two sisters have, but I still don't understand the fear of being "friends" with Zecora. This chapter alone has shown how trustworthy and caring she is. I'm so confused why he's scared of the label, but not scared of actually being a friend to her. There's been no indication, or backstory to show why this fear of the word "friend" exists.
Otherwise, I'm enjoying this story quite a bit. All the characters seem "in character" and I'm enjoying all the reactions to "human culture."
"You have songs for baby goats?" got a sensible chuckle from me.
I also like the world building, the differences in voices, the more colorful mane and tail on Celestia. Yes!
I love world-building.
Thank you for posting.
Been reading this all day and I have to say that I'm really enjoying this story, especially the pacing and the time given to properly develop the world and the characters. Love the focus on Zecora too since that's a rare sight indeed.
While I agree with other readers that Jethro can be frustrating at times, I don't think he's acting unrealistic or without reason. He barely knew anything before coming into this foreign reality, and even before then it seems he had existing issues with him. One day he goes to sleep a bank manager, and the next he wakes up and his entire reality is shattered under the assault of finding out a greek goddess is real, which is enough to make anyone rethink their existence, and that he is on an alien planet where magic is real.
Jethro is a fairly ordinary bloke so when this happens he freaks out, amplified by his existing anxiety. When you thrust a human into an unknown environment, their survival instincts will take hold, and one of our basest instincts is paranoia. While he still has some logical thinking, his instincts are just forcing him to survive.
You could read into this as to why he spends so much time with Zecora as she is the closest thing to normal he has outside of his earthly possessions, and she provides safety and the resources to help him survive. (Though I just think he genuinely likes her but, due to past experiences losing loved ones, can't bring himself to go down that path again.)
I believe this is in-part the reason for his behaviour. And I'm sure the other part will be revealed at the author's discretion.
Anyway, with my own thoughts out of the way, I look forward to seeing where the rest of this story goes.
I take it everyone forgot Applejack tries to kill him?
No, not that song. Please not It's a small world after all. Anything but that song. Anyway, I think I remember reading a headline that the It's a small world ride is finally being replaced.
Nice and interesting story so far, I'm really enjoying it.

She is a pony and he is a non-pony, so there really isn't anything there worth mentioning. It's her Celestia given right to do anything she pleases to non-ponies as long as it isn't in Celestia's presence. Just like those filthy non-pony Deerkin.
11210108
Murder is never right no matter who someone is or isn't. Self defense is one thing but except scolding them and trying keep them from spilling the almost finished cure he did nothing to them. In fact zecora would have more right to hurt them because breaking and entering and almost killing her friend right in front of her would put her in the right.
11220444
Sarcasm so thick it could choke a T-Rex to death and it still zooms right over everyone's heads... what has the world come to that people would believe something so God awfully flanderized to be sincere? Literally the only to make that worse was to riddle it with profanity. Use extremism to lampshade something to support another guy's comment and "everyone loses their minds!"
I tried I love the story and the premise but holy crap do I hate the jethro I'm sorry but he is an idiot it honestly might be just that i'm to cynical that I just can't believe both him or the ponies.
"Oh! The pain! Oh! The agony!"
11192036
Right!
11186826
I support the opinion.
But thing is everybody too spoiled by a lot of author's. In near every HiE story we see a guys without fear saving the world three times a day and then go to Pinkie Party.
Or even a Super-Duper- Delta- Specnaz- Omega-Turbo Force military man, who can kill half a continent just by sight.
We rarely see an AWERAGE human. Managers, Builders, Drivers etc who have their fears, hopes and relatives.
So please stop blame Jethro for all humanity sins.
Peace for you people
I don't get this guy, his personality is all over the damn place, acting gung ho and careless at one point and acting like a 5 year old scared of his first day of school the next. I tried giving this a shot but the eratic inconsistent behavior has killed it for me.
Apologize to the author, but this is about as far as I could get into the story before I gave up.
Jethro is not a likable character to me personally, but I appreciate the attempted worldbuilding? I just think it kinda got way out of hoof when all the ponies went into the house and Jethro tried to explain things. Dude was either too nonchalant or too fearful, and those just don't mix well in storytelling. (Also what guy panics at the thought of gaining a friend after they've been hanging out for like over a month? 😕 Idk seems backwards in character development, but I appreciate trying to add character flaws? It just felt major off to me.)
Credit where credit is due, the narrative descriptions and pony dialogue are fairly decent, but that's about all I got to add here.
Also, the moment he said he was an otaku I irl

soo true
this is one of the stories in this genre that find a balance between an OP mc and a weak-ass one. imagine if you were teleported from a world like earth into a cartoon land? imagine going from a game of star citizen on the world's fastest, most powerful computer that runs it at 8k 120 fps, with ray-tracing, then play roblox on a macintosh. and I'm talking about the decade old type. imagine that, but with real life. would you feel scared? yes, you probably would. luna and celestia are beings eons old, and can lift the moon and sun respectively without batting an eye. Jethro has barely watched the first season, and you expect him, a regular human, in a world full of ponies, to be perfectly fine with living in equestria? he has only set foot in a small town once in his month in equestria, and up until this chapter, has only heard of celestia and luna's might. would you be perfectly calm with little to no background on the princesses, and having just attacked their guards? well if you would be, then bear in mind, the princesses can destroy you with the smallest thought. feel free to refute
11186728
howabout lifting celestial bodies?
11186625
well, his ability is kinda limited. he is almost invincible in dreams, but once in the real world, he weak af. the goddess, can only appear in his head. would you be calm after attacking the guards of a duo of literal gods who can lift celestial bodies? one could argue that punishing ponies is out of character for the princesses, but jesthro dont know that
11296595
And considering expect for moments with the elements they didn't show up much on the show and Luna got less time than her sister.
11296589
Even accounting for the fact that it may have been tough work for a whole team, that was basically just a unicorn job before the princesses even showed up -- so, if they’re gods for merely being able to do so single-horned, what does that make, sayyy...Flim and Flam?
(Note that I’m personally not necessarily convinced that Equestria’s sun and moon are even comparable to Earth’s. There are legitimate indications in the show that its world may just be flat under a classic celestial dome, in which case the sun in particular would likely be multiple orders of magnitude closer and correspondingly smaller. Probably not a ball of plasma running on nuclear fusion of hydrogen to helium under the crush of its own sheer weight, either.)
I almost dropped this story right here. I stopped reading for an hour while I thought about if I even wanted to give the rest of the chapter a chance it was so bad. I still might drop the story if Jethro keeps being half this cringe.
I don't think there is a Princess Celestia of Manehattan, and why not Applejack of Ponyville?
But RD and AJ who attacked him earlier are allowed?
How is a bank manager so socially inept? Is he not able to pick up on social queues, like the fact that everyone else is not bowing or using grandiose language to talk to the princesses? He was even told as much by Zecora.
I want to like this story but Jethro's ineptitude/bowing is pissing me off. I'll give it another chapter or two to see if it gets better before I drop it.
11341890
Chill dude, no reason to have a tism schism.
11186733
He's not afraid of being friends with Zecora, he's afraid of caring for someone, anyone, that much. Zecora just happened to be the one to trigger that fear. As someone who has lost a lot of loved ones and who has been hurt by people I cared about, I can understand that fear, even if irrational. Cause that's the thing about fear, it RARELY ever is rational.
11186728
Don't know what you're talking about, their power level is on par with plenty of polytheistic gods. Maybe the problem is you're looking at the word "god" through an Abrahamic-monotheistic lense?
11186625
Abilities and powers that he can only use when he is astral-projecting in his sleep, when he is awake he is as powerless as any other human. Have you just been skimming this whole time?
I am truly happy that so many of you in the comments have gone through so little real hardships, pain, and loss that you can't understand Jethro's behavior, even if it frustrates me to no end.
11346111
To be fair. And im not bashing the story or author or anything.
Personally I find jethros behavior a tad too emotional, but i inderstand, i have friends who are like him, and one friend who is a spitting image of him.
The thing thats partially triggering me here is, as an Australian, we have a "She'll be right" (everything will work out in the end) attitude, and this works to our best favor, and detriment.
We're hard working, hard wearing, and physically, mentally and emotionally, stubborn as mules.
The reason why i say to our detriment, is we have a very... lets say inclosed view on emotions, showing too much here, whilst a clear sign of something wrong, is viewed by the individual acting out as a weakness. And factoring into the previously mentioned personality traits. Not personally desired.
So when jethro has an emotional blowout, i am reminded what happens when people have emotional blowouts here.
Months if not YEARS of emotional bottling suddenly pops its cork (usually lubed up but varying amounts of alcohol) and the emotional blowout, blows up like a grenade. And let me tell you from personal experience.
Tables. Will be flipped. Fists, certainly flying. And by the end of it, someone is either;
A- beaten black and blue.
B- a new mortal enemy.
C- a new drinking buddy
D- a trusted friend.
E- a new or returning family member
Or
F- dead. Very, very dead...
But thats just my cultural thing. Do note thst not every Australian is like this obviously. Its just a general thing. We have VERY high rates of anxiety and depression. Very, very high.
11406623
Just to clarify.
LOVING the story!
HOPING to see more of it continie coming out.
And
KEEP on going dear Author!
I honestly read the comments some of these people leave over and think "Im sure if such a minute detail is the cause of your dislike and departure, your bookshelves must be very much smaller than mine..."
Needless to say, FiM is one of those stories that leans heavily on the sentimentality of its themes which are also literally diegesis and devices in the story itself. I don't buy that execution, not because it's sappy or childish, but because it is too simple and literal of an interpretation. A similar franchise would be Kingdom Hearts and its constant flip flopping between hearts as literal objects and abstract concepts among other inane and convoluted complexities of its lore.
For all its good, simple, & straightforward intentions, FiM's lessons don't hold much water and lose impact in a vastly more complex world or setting such as reality. And that's what i expect from HiE fics; to bring a good heathly dose of it to this cartoon we all know and love. But that doesn't happen here, and i'd honestly put this story in the same box as most early HiEs, which is sorta great on average, but stagnant for a story coming out in 2022. Yet i can't really blame the author for not executing it like that, since he just started watching the show then. So the best i can level these complaints and issues are as critiques at Jethro's character writing.
He is less his own character with an identity and more a blank slate or stand in for the reader, as most HiE fics tend to portray their MCs. They are upstanding as much as they can be, show their flaws only as dictated by the flow of the story, and are very pleasing & accomodating so as to engender themselves to the characters as fast as possible, which has happened a lot in many stories before. TBH i do enjoy reading kinds of fanfic fantasy like that from time to time, where the MC is clearly a vessel. But it's rather boring that this became another fish in the pond, so to speak.
Jethro had so many advantages from the get-go but didn't play it smart and so revealed his hand early on. Not that i don't sympathize with his stress, but he has been a headless chicken for a good part up to this point. The bit where he gets angry with Athena for that 1 detail was offputting of his character. He is too careful & does not act with confidence, yet he ignores the one thing that would have given him that & power, which is his future knowledge from the show. Not that i was expecting him to speedrun Equestria or take it to its fullest advantage, but he neither did he utilize it much at all over barely hashed out implications, nor did it build up its reveal to a satisfying enough climax. He had many options other than letting himself be spotted easily by the guards, but no he just waltz in. Most of the 'exciting' bits either already happened before (defend pony & gain trust) or was just tension he imagined. Jethro has hit a milestone in his HiE journey, but even with the blessings of an ancient goddess, he performed to a T what other MCs hav done before him, or worried himself into a ball and rolled into the back pocket of gaining their sympathy. Not much of note to set this story apart has happened so far, which is a shame.
On the whole, the story is still interesting. So on i read, to see if it gets better. Fingers crossed.
Pity
