Mockingbirb

A pony of mystery in the darkness. Or I forgot to take the lens cap off. (They/them is fine.)

T

In a world where insectile monsters feed on ponies' laughter, and the word 'chuckle' is almost synonymous with death, Maud teaches a very special comedy workshop to save ponies' lives.

Alternate Title: "The Laughter Thieves"

Dammit Pinkie Pie. Either I'm crazy. Or that thing used to be Pinkie. And she was corrupted into this and started turning ponies into these things. Or am I overthinking it?

Well, your comment reminded me that I forgot to tag as "Alternate Universe." (Now fixed.)

So how far off was I? Or was I rambling about nothing?

I was author-headcanoning an AU world in which MLP's changelings, instead of feeding on love, feed on laughter. But I didn't really specify, did I?

Honestly, I think you had a creative explanation that doesn't ruin the story.

Honestly, assuming it wasn't just coincidental, my interpretation was that the queen adopted a vaguely Pinkie-esque appearance in an attempt to lure Maud into some sort of false sense of security. Yours makes a lot more sense, though!

Wow, your interpretations are even darker than mine was, and you make perfect sense. So now I am definitely not going to 'fix' the story to prevent that, because I like having readers think about my story and make extra fun (or extra horror) for us all.

This fic has an interesting concept. Great job!

At the front of the room, a life-size photograph of Pinkie Pie stood in a thick, basalt-colored matte frame. It resembled a gravestone.

The resemblance was appropriate. Maud, a gray pony wearing a dull blue-green dress, hadn't seen her sister in years. She didn't expect to see the laughing pink pony ever again.

For in this world, laughter was all too often fatal.

great opening lines! i like how the narration's cadence feels like the cadence of Maud's dialogue, complete with stating a dramatic, ominous reveal in a very muted, off-hoof way
i like how the cadence of the narration feels like Maud

Maud nodded. "So when you feel happy, you pull that feeling down deep into yourself. Imagine your smile flowing down from your face, through your body.

"Instead of showing on your face, or spilling from your lips, your joy comes together and collects within your chest, inside your heart, like a nice, toasty ball of warmth. You can feel your happiness in its hiding place, like a lantern with its storm shield on, but it never shows on your outsides. It never appears as a smile, or as a laugh, because it's tucked away inside you, where it's warm and safe and can't hurt you.

oof! and i get the feeling that in this AU, the "hurt you" is going to be literal in this AU...

A loud 'splutch' noise interrupted his little speech. The stallion slumped to the floor. Behind him, a shiny-carapaced creature buzzed its pale blue wings. "It's howdy doody doodle time!" the creature said through its fangs. In a flash of green light, the chuckling transformed into a whitefaced clown, with a big red nose, curly blue poofy hair, and enormous floppy shoes.

oh, i really like this! the whole "scary clown" thing feels very played out these days, with just the one layer of subversion: a visage meant to be silly and entertain concealing darker intentions. but here, the darker intention is the surface intention, which really makes this approach special.

"No," the true or false alicorn replied. "If I already knew, why would I be asking you?"

hehe, i do like the phrase "true or false alicorn"

She let her inner ball of warmth spread out through her whole body...and smiled.

aww! can't be a Maud Pie story without ending in a slight smile

augh, this is exactly the kind of Dark and Gritty AU that i find interesting, one where the supernatural, world-changing force renders dangerous a very common part of the human experience, twisting its characters and society (e.g. A Quiet Place, Los últimos días). it's just such fascinating worldbuilding! and the chucklings are a really fitting one to the world of MLP.

and augh, the things that make Maud Pie difficult to understand for other ponies being uniquely adaptive to the new situation is such a great thing to explore, and i loved the unelaborated-on ominous references to the fate of her sister, Pinkie. just wish i could see more of this world!
