The big problem is the Hippogriffs.

SBS can get real lucky with the satchel charges and take out a general ship design very quickly indeed, even if they just start with crippling it, and maybe theres at least one militery fan on the Texas that heard of Special Door Openers etc

Trouble is with almost all tech. theyre made to very accurate tolerances. Get smething in teh wrong place at the wrong time, and Aliens in Independance Day find out their planet cracker doesnt like being destabiilised by a small detonation. Or sand in the bearings.

This whole spie thing is kind of killing the mood of the story for me at least

Eh, I only see one small flaw here; the Spanish-American war. Yes, it was started because the USS Maine exploded, however, the exact cause still remains hotly debated to this day. There's 3 theories on the matter.

1. Spain sunk the ship. (This is the most widely accepted answer, but yet still leaves questions, such as why would Spain provoke a war that they were woefully unprepared to fight?)

2. The Cubans sank the ship, so that they could blame it on the Spanish. (The Cubans wanted the US to intervene on their behalf, so what better way to do that than via a false-flag operation?)

3. The explosion occurred inside the ship itself, either by a fire in a coal bunker ignited clouds of coal dust (a common problem with ships back then), or a boiler explosion (the Maine used a type of boiler that had several notable faults, and were unreliable) which then touched off a magazine explosion, and sank the Maine with a heavy loss of life. As time went on, more and more historians have reexamined the sinking of the USS Maine, and many now believe that Spain was innocent, and the explosion actually came from what I just talked about
