Following her restoration in 2022, the battleship USS Texas BB-35 disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico en-route back to Texas. Suddenly, those aboard her find themselves in a new world, and may soon have to fight for their lives
And yeah, Texas is such an amazing ship. I had the privilege of seeing her in person maybe 6 years ago, and I enjoyed it very much. And this story is amazing too, and I'm glad that you like it.
And yes, they are. The Ponies had better hope that the Mane 6 and Spike can get this resolved before any more shots are fired, because if the Texas has to fire her main 14in guns, the damage will be enormous.
And I'm glad that you enjoyed the Chapter. Luna might appreciate the color of the Texas once she gets to see it in person, and realizes that it's close to her own fur.
And I'll start on Chapter 4 tomorrow, but it could be another 1-2 weeks or more before it's ready
While it seemed a bit strange that Twilight and Luna seemed so we'll versed in Naval terminology, the chapter was done very well! I was wondering what type of Equestria we were about to see, and I'm interested so far in the technological spectrum you've established. Now, it's time to see your take on first contact, and I'm excited to see what's in store
Im trying to work out what size of battleship gun would be roughly equivalent in yeild to the video I saw the other day of some total nutters in Finland, seeing what happens when you weld a steel pusher plate to half a ton of car, then sit it on top of a mere 75 kilogram of dynamite.
Quick hint? One of the wheel and suspension struts was found over a hundred metres away, and all ten of the Texas main guns firing once have a yield easily equivalent to a Hundred times larger. Im not sure if they are 500 or 750 kg warheads each, just that the largest super battleships had shells well over the ton, and ten of those going off tend to clear extremely lage areas.
With only having such a small number of non specialist crew, the TExas can only stay at full alert for a short while as people will start to get tired and jumpy very quickly, which is not a good thing to have, especially with Heavies. Manning on shifts reduces the number of instant response turrets, but at least keeps crew capabile of actually responding?
As for radio communications, if theyre at Red Alert, the City can have All radio requesitioned, to be able to transmit on as many fewuencies as possible?
How did the tugs etc even pick up any radio at all? Only the Texas even has AM, Medium wave, Long Wave non digital communication systems, which were closed down, as commercial radio especially in normal times lags well behind militery frequencies?
If Texas has Over The Horizon ballistic capability, but radar targeted, then being only 8 miles off shore means they could hit small towns on the inland far side of teh city, never mind buildings within the city?
Attempts to contact the vessels were made by the 3 tugboats, but they never received any replies, or heard any static indicating that the ships had radios.
Static isn't indicative of other radio devices as there are too many causes of radio hiss. Causes of radio hiss include general background radiation, atmospheric disturbances, and interface from other radio devices. Although being near other radio devices will effect the level of hiss this only happens while the radio device is transmitting.
After a little bit more cheering, they all washed their hands again, put on aprons and hats, and went to work. They washed, peeled, and grated potatoes to make hashbrowns, went next door to the galley to the bakery to make some fresh bread for toast and french toast (yes, Texas has her own bakery), and in the butcher shop close by (yes, Texas has a butcher shop too), they were able to find enough pork to make sausage patties. They also cut up some fruit, began brewing coffee, and in the area for storing cold foods, eggs for scrambled eggs were also found. All 5 of them were really scurrying around, but once the smells of breakfast began to waft through the ship, they knew that it was all going to be worth it in the end.
Is... is this actually serious? I’ve seen this written once before about another ship - historical, a fanfic - and I honestly can’t tell if it’s serious. Why would a battleship have shops? I can understand food preparation areas, but a straight up bakery?
Great new chapter for the story, those Warning Shots were perfect too, but I got to know, since you have Subway trains and elevated trains in the story along with oil tankers and other ships, just how advanced is this Equestria in terms of Tech, do they have WW1 or WW2 level tech or higher?
I mean, I feel like there’s a really simple solution to this; stop flipping frequencies. Or better yet, get a second radio. One to flip through frequencies, the other to stay on one frequency, both sending a message. That way if the other party is still flipping, they’ll find a solid frequency, and if they stopped flipping they’ll be found instead. Simple fix.
Plus I really don’t think Twilight and co are qualified for this...
Finally, cringe Pinkie moment. Unnecessary fourth-wall break that felt out of place. A lot of stories do this and it bothers me every time. Yes, she breaks the fourth wall, but rarely so blatantly, and everyone else’s reaction to it was overdone I feel.
Second final thing, Twilight felt a bit off as well. I mean, she outright seemed to command Celestia at one point, lemme find the line:
"The Black Baron?! But how...?! How did he...?! Tell us everything you know about this!" Twilight finally managed to sputter out.
“Tell us everything you know about this!” is a fairly out-of-character thing to say to the Princesses.
Same can be said for Fluttershy with this line:
"And do we know who's crewing this warship yet?" Fluttershy asked worriedly.
I feel like Fluttershy wouldn’t be the one asking this kind of question. Least, not without a stutter or it being said super shyly, y’know?
"And only 3 out of the 5 turrets have their guns pointed towards Fillydelphia?" Spike asked. "Why?"
Last one, Spike, this line felt odd to come from Spike as well. Mostly because of the terminology. Dunno what time in the show or after the show we’re at, but pre-epilogue Spike was still a child and not as eloquent as this makes him out to be.
10279397 Your welcome hope the ponies and our small hero group of six will help find a way to keep the peace between Equestria and the Texas and hopefully they can help fully crew the lone star of the navy
Looking over this chapter, I might charge the Rear Admiral on negligence - missing one asset, his pegasi. There should have been some two-three pony teams making clouds out of the fog so they could observe with binoculars 10 miles outside the harbor, bonus points is there is a portable radio to take with them (could also have the affect of starting a comm frequency as it would not be shifting).
I am loving the fic so far. I would just like to point out that there should be a comma immediately prior to when a character is directly addressing another character. There have been a few prevalent grammatical issues, but this one stands out the most.
Examples of this in action from your story, but with the corrected grammar:
"Yes, Sir!"
"Hey, Bret?"
"Affirmative, Captain."
Notice how both titles and names are included in this. Direct address is the key here.
Other than the grammatical, an issue I have is how similar everyone's voices are. There are a lot of 'heys', 'yeahs', and other kinds of greetings or confirmations that, combined with the rest of the dialogue, feels a bit... uniform? I can't really tell who's speaking based on their voice, and I find myself often unable to figure out who's speaking during the human parts.
As a whole, I am looking forward to more! Just keep this in mind for the future.
10279567 Yeah, also the radio itself produces some noise internally, however, if another ship had a radio and it was transmitting, but the frequency was too different, there would be no perceptible increase in noise. So, there is no way to tell if someone else has a radio or not, the most you can know is if they are transmitting in your frequency (or very close) or not.
Local oscillators in radio receivers can produce some interference, but that will also be on a specific frequency and very low power.
AWESOME chapter bro! Battle INTENSE! Xd Out of curiosity do the 3 tug boats have any means of protecting themselves? Like, do they have any firearms on board?
I don't know, as I haven't seen that video, but to have done that? Sheesh! That would have to be something quite powerful indeed!
And you're right about that. Which is why thankfully the stalemate only lasts another 2 hours or so before the Mane 6 arrive, and the 2 sides finally figure out how to communicate with each other. But yes, in those 2 hours, some do get jumpy, and others are getting tired, but thankfully crews are able to quietly switch around without being noticed by the Ponies, enabling them to rest for a few minutes before going back to their stations.
Yes, that can happen, however, the city didn't have any military frequencies, which is what the Texas seemed to be transmitting on. However, as you'll see later, the radio stations in the city did try to contact the unknown warship, but because the radio operators had switched frequencies, they were no longer listening to civilian music, and because of that they missed the radio stations's attempts to contact them.
That's why they were only getting static. Their radios could detect that there was another radio being used, but because of the differences between frequencies, they could only pick up static. Why were they being used at all? Well back when they still thought that they were on Earth, the tugs had the only operational radios for the kinds of frequencies used today. However, when it was found that Texas's radio was picking up music, and the tugs couldn't get anything, Texas's radios became the primary ones. As for how they could pick up the music, they only heard it thanks to the intercom speakers on Texas. They weren't picking it up themselves.
The guns on Texas had a maximum firing range of 23,000 yards, which is the equivalent of 13.7 miles; 3 miles beyond the horizon. And if you look at pictures of Omaha Beach, even to this day, you can see the massive craters that were created by Texas's guns when she bombarded the shoreline during D-Day. It looks like the surface of the moon! So yes, where Texas is now, she could potentially hit any building within the city once she had it targeted, and even slightly beyond. The guns could have been upgraded to shoot at 36,000 yards (20 miles), but unfortunately, the shell hoists on Texas weren't strong enough to lift the heavier, more modern shells, so they never were.
And that's not the case? Crap. I know very little about radios, but I heard somewhere that static can indicate the presence of another radio, but I guess that that's not always the case.
And yes. This is absolutely 100% factually correct. You can Google this if you do not believe me, but yes, Texas actually does have a bakery where bread and some pastries for special occasions were baked, as well as a butcher's shop where meat was prepared. I've seen these places with my own eyes when I toured the Texas, and they're on the ship's blueprints. No, sailors couldn't buy anything from them, as they were part of the galley, but yes, Texas had a bakery, and a butcher's shop.
10280275 That's only if: The radios are inexpensive like a toy radio, and the radios are transmitting on the same freq as you. All military grade radios don't have that project, and modern radios run denoiseing algorithms to get rid of background hiss.
It's showtime boyz!
Very nice !
hell yes this is awesome the Texas is a great ship
10279003
Hello Boeing-787,
And yeah, here we go. Chapter 3, here in its full glory for you and everyone else to enjoy!
10279004
Hello thisisastorymindyou,
And thanks! I'm glad that you enjoyed your read.
10279008
Hello Lunas Prince,
And yeah, Texas is such an amazing ship. I had the privilege of seeing her in person maybe 6 years ago, and I enjoyed it very much. And this story is amazing too, and I'm glad that you like it.
Your way out of your leave tiny ponies
Texas is one of the best BB’s the navy ever built glad to see she’ll get another chance at life in this story keep it up
When fun starts Equestrians will fill up the rest of the crew slots me thinks.
This was a good chapter, great job. I also wonder if Luna appreciates the color of the USS Texas, just a thought.
Can’t wait for the next chapter!
10279057
Hello DarkKing 2,
And yes, they are. The Ponies had better hope that the Mane 6 and Spike can get this resolved before any more shots are fired, because if the Texas has to fire her main 14in guns, the damage will be enormous.
10279060
Hello Sentinel053,
And yes, Texas is one of the best battleships. And yes, she gets a new life here in this story. I'm glad that you've been liking it so far.
10279109
Hello Edguy0009,
And yes, you are correct. In the near future, the Texas will have a lot of Ponies in her crew too
10279394
It's going to be bodies everywhere
10279168
Hello ShirtMechanic,
And I'm glad that you enjoyed the Chapter. Luna might appreciate the color of the Texas once she gets to see it in person, and realizes that it's close to her own fur.
And I'll start on Chapter 4 tomorrow, but it could be another 1-2 weeks or more before it's ready
10279401
Yes, there will be, unless of course the situation is diffused. There will be bodies everywhere eventually, but they won't be Equestrian
10279407
Good good
10279411
Yeah. The Black Baron and his pirate hordes will soon rue the day that they decided to mess with a battleship crew of pissed off Texans!
10279429
Send them all down to Davy Jones Locker
10279436
Don't worry, I will! *loads 14in guns with malicious intent*
10279168
I think she might i like colour on the Texas
Great work keep it up can’t wait for for next chapter
10279454
Good
10279456
Don't worry, she likes it a lot
10279459
Hey Dinokid11,
And I'm glad that you liked the Chapter.
And I'll start on Chapter 4 tomorrow, but it could take a while to complete
10279460
