Following her restoration in 2022, the battleship USS Texas BB-35 disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico en-route back to Texas. Suddenly, those aboard her find themselves in a new world, and may soon have to fight for their lives
And yes, I thought that it was high time that the USS Texas, the Lone Star of the Pacific, the LAST Dreadnought-Era Battleship on Earth, and one of only 6 ships remaining that served in both World Wars deserved her own story to give her the tribute that she deserves. There were no other stories about the Texas, so I hatched my own. I hope that you enjoy it.
And actually, that would be pretty funny to see. I wasn't thinking of this when I made the whole crew Texans, but yet, Sandy certainly wouldn't be out of place. Heck, she wouldn't even need to use her diving suit(?), as like the Texas crew, she breathes normal air. However, I don't know how the Crew of the Texas would react to having a giant talking squirrel on their ship either!
The only question I have is this; is the Texas ACTUALLY being restored right now in real life, or is this just wish fulfillment? Cause last I heard the old girl really needed some major TLC, but I hadn't heard anything about plans for restoration or repairs at the time.
And yes, irl as we speak, plans are underway to restore the Texas once again. In August of last year, the Texas State Legislature gave $35 million dollars to the Battleship Texas Foundation to have the Texas towed to a dry-dock along the Gulf Coast, where her hull would be replaced and repainted, internal structures that were rusting and corroding would also be repaired/replaced, parts of the ship would be repainted, and other work would be done, including restoration work on her AA guns, as well as her 5in guns. Sometime this summer, the ship will be towed to this dry-dock (they haven't announced where yet, but are starting to take bids), and remain there until 2022 when the work is complete. After this, she'll be towed back to Texas, but instead of being returned to San Jacinto, she'll be moved to a new home elsewhere in Texas where she would be able to attract more visitors, and with them, more money for her continued restoration. Again, her new home is pending, but she will have one. Here's the official Battleship Texas website where they talk about the updates to progress with the restoration. https://battleshiptexas.org/battleship-updates/
And me too. As old as the ship is (106), what she is (the last Dreadnought Battleship on Earth), her incredible history (having served in both World Wars), and her achievements (first US battleship to launch a plane, first US battleship with radar, first US battleship with AA guns, among a few others) she deserves to be preserved, and kept around for future generations to enjoy
And I don't know. I keep hearing about the Dry-Berth Project, but I haven't heard any new updates about it for a while. I don't know if they're still going to do that or not.
And why is she called the Lone Star of the Pacific, when most of her career was in the Atlantic? I'm not sure. I saw a painting called "Lone Star of the Pacific", and I assumed that this was one of her nicknames, but this may or may not be the case. I can't find any information about this
and Texas sinks to the bottom of a large black hole, except for the Austin area, which survives. Ponies enslave mankind until humans are no more.......end of a wonderful story. LOL
10269209 I'm going to tell you a dirty little secret so some of that history will make sense to you. You see, I grew up looking across the San Jacinto River at the Monument and the Texas starting in 1950. Because the Houston Ship Channel and the largest refinery/chemical complex in the world are located on the San Jacinto River, the water there was toxic. In fact, shipping companies used to send their vessels there to get the barnacles dissolved off. It's much better now but a whole lot of those problems with the Texas were due more to the corrosive environment than any neglect. Of course it didn't help that the environment wasn't much easier on humans than barnacles. In one famous incident workers on a nearby dock died from breathing the fumes coming off the water. (both plants that were responsible for that incident have been shut down.)
And this was very enlightening. I remember reading about how corrosive the water in the Houston Ship Channel is when I was doing a lot of research on the USS Texas prior to writing the story. However, I never knew why it was so corrosive until now
And I'm glad that you like the story so far. And I know both of these ships well. Many battleship stories here on FimFiction involve an Iowa-Class ship, but there weren't any about the USS Texas, so I decided to fix that with this story. And I'd like to know, why're you such a fan of the USS Wyoming? She didn't do much in WW1, before being relegated to a training ship post-WW1, which was what she did for the rest of her career until she was retired, and scrapped, though US Navy Ensign Jimmy Carter was part of her final crew before she was decommissioned
All the technical things kinda went over my head but that’s typical when it comes to war things. The only battle I recognize was D-Day and I found operation Magic Carpet interesting.
Great start my friend

once done isn't she being drydocked for good like Victory?
Also why Lone Star of the Pacific, most of her career was Atlantic?

Hello MikiStenbeck,
And yes, it really is Someone else sent me this video, and it never gets old
This is interesting so far, I will say that the Texas is my 3rd favorite ship beat only by the USS Wyoming and the USS Iowa I can't wait to see how she fairs in uncharted Naval Combatnaval-encyclopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/wow-Wyoming-1024x424.jpg
This is her relatively early armament which I love the most

And Iowa is just a massive beauty as always

Hello Luckyfanisaac,
And that's ok. That's partly why I went into so much detail; so that people who don't know about what I'm writing about can get a detailed explanation
