I've never seen a place that's quite like this. Everything is turned around; this crazy world is upside down.

Serenade has not had an easy life. Being a high-school dropout, estranged from her family, penniless, unemployed, and a single mother to her infant daughter Cadenza, it's hard to imagine things getting much worse for her. But all too often, things get worse before they get better.

Yet despite it all, Serenade endeavors to keep her chin up and work hard for the sake of her foal. She's come too far and suffered too much to give up now.

But just how far can a mother's love carry her?

How do I know this story won't die after only one chapter?

Now this looks exciting. I can't wait for more!

The second chapter's mostly done already. I intentionally held off on publishing it until I had the whole thing outlined, planned, and I had the drive to start writing it. It's not a guarantee, but it's the best I can offer!

Thanks! I've had this story floating around in my head for a long time, and I'm excited to finally be posting it. Hope you enjoy what's to come!

With a start this strong I will!

Hmm, that description reminds me of the book of Job. Sounds pretty interesting. I'll give it a read later.

I'd never heard of the Book of Job before now, but after a quick bit of research, I'm flattered! Hope you enjoy it when you get around the reading it.

Great start overall, but I'm a bit confused by the setting. Where does this take place, exactly? I thought nopony lived outside Equestria.

Elmshire's a setting of my own imagination—headcanon-wise, it's a city to the south of the San Palomino Desert, which I don't think conflicts with canon since I'm pretty sure there's nothing down there canonically yet. I set it there because this story is going to explore themes that don't line up with my view of typical Equestrian society, so I wanted a place that still had ponies but also had a slightly different cultural and societal bent. Hopefully that makes some kind of sense!

Gotcha. I figured it was something like that. And now that I know you're exploring unique themes, using an original setting will certainly let you avoid the AU tag and/or reader complaints.

Oh jeez. What's gonna happen next to poor Seri?

This will be continued, right?:applecry:

Indeed it will! I'll probably be sending the third chapter off to my proofreader in the next few days, and it'll be published shortly thereafter. Glad you're enjoying things so far!

This entire story hits WAY to close to home. Right down to the ice cream scene, eviction notices, and the canned foods. It took me some willpower to keep reading but damn this is good.

Sorry to hear that it hits so close to home—that's really rough. But I'm glad you're enjoying it all the same.

The urchin really ties the chapter together- she's a cutie!

8539784
Yeah, I had a lot of fun writing her!

My goodness, this story is giving me all kinds of feels right from the get go. You have a gem here I must say, lets see where this goes shall we?

Hey, thanks! Hope you continue to enjoy the story!

Seems to me that she has some form of severe PTSD that is triggered by certain smells, hence the vinegar she used last chapter to go outside. I wonder what happened..
I'm totally hooked on this!

The exact opposite happened to what I thought was going to transpire. I figured someone would step in to protect Seri from the street vendors wrath at sticking up for a thief, not the vendor coming to her aide! A pleasant surprise mind you. Can't wait for the next chapter!

Nice to see a bit of good happen to Serenade

Something tells me this is going to tie in to a story you published over three years ago now. I don't want to name it – it's my potential hope! Not yours! – but it'd be one hell of a coincidence if it didn't.

Although three years is quite the gap, I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

I was thinking about this story lately. Here's to hoping it will continue.
