The males go into rut and try to get a mate, but the females simply have swollen bellies filled with a clutch and a strong mental desire to have them fertilized. Rape and rough sex with the purpose of only breeding, no love involved, is likely not uncommon given how uncivilized and self-centered dragons seem in the show.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

Ember would expect Spike to be rough with her like every other dragon if she were to ask him to breed her, but would be surprised when he was concerned with her well-being and pleasure as much as his own given he was raised with the much gentler pony race. I'd imagine, in that specific case, it would be like ponies mating.
This is actually the planned plot of one of my many unfinished stories I started then got sidetracked on or lost interest in.

I know this is just headcanon but one thing I could see many mares doing is wear special diapers during estrus. Not the poofy foal diapers but tight fitting pull-ups that they can lower quite easily. It would keep the juices inside so they don't leak everywhere and if the diaper is tight it would reduce the amount of pheromones.
...My only question, such as it is, Regards the mention of Tender Taps in the first chapter, while in this chapter, the three still seeking their cutie marks. I can see AB, buying the dildos and stuff a few weeks prior to this, being a blank-flank still, but with mention of a post-cutie-mark encounter earlier in the day... confusion and disbelief abound.
Still a wonderful story, though, to be sure!
