Literally everything we've seen in canon shows the exact opposite. They love using magic and other such things to determine natural things, such as time, weather, seasons, etc. Heck, they have an enormous fear of the Everfree Forest because it's completely natural. You'll remember that, when telling the reasons why the place was so feared, the first things they mentioned was how the weather, plants, feeding of animals, etc., all were uncontrolled.
The thing mentioned above makes absolutely no sense. This is really why I wish stories like this wouldn't use things like heat or other such ridiculous things as an excuse, because they never make sense. Just have Applejack want to date him because, surprise, she is interested in him and wants to try. Using some all controlling thing like "heat" just makes it overly complicated and makes it harder to suspend disbelief.

Weather is actually changed physically and naturally by Pegusi in Ponyville, and the seasons by all races - but strictly NOT by magic. Did you not watch Winter Wrap-up (S1E11)? From that episode, and I quote:
Spike:"Don't they (Earth Ponies) use magic like they do in Canterlot (to change the seasons)?
Twilight: " No Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth Ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter. It's traditional."
And from later in the episode...
Applejack: (angrily) "Nuts Twilight, you used magic! On MAH FARM! That's not how we do things 'round here Twilight!"
end quoting.
So, from this episode, I saw not one single unicorn (except Twilight) using magic to Wrap-up Winter, a NATURAL event. So, one could expand that Earth Pony view to other NATURAL things, including heat cycles and breeding, the same way.
Actually, they fear the Everfree Forest because it's UN-NATURAL and wild, uncontrollable and totally unpredictable - not to mention filled with LITERAL MONSTERS.
As explained above, it makes total sense when put into context with a canon viewpoint of Earth Ponies, and expansions made thereof.
It's a story about talking, pastel-colored anthropomorphic horses fucking. I think we're well past 'suspension of disbelief' upon entering the website.
